I've fasted on and off for some time, but not gone as long as 36 hours until recently. I've found though that once I start eating I feel groggy and uncomfortable for about a day. How do you break a fast, and do you feel good?

Hi,

Are you following a low carb way of eating? I have recently done 12, 24 36, 48 and 72 hour fasts but as I am on the ketogenic lifestyle I tend to break my fasts with protein. Salmon also works good for me.

When I have researched this in the past, it could be down to the food you are eating causing inflammation.

Start slow with a small bit of food and then eat something bigger later on. I know sometimes it can be easy to want to eat a lot at once but foods should be added back slowly.

Thank you for your reply - I did break my fast with protein last time (roast chicken), but in hindsight it did wake my appetite and I went on to eat some carb heavy foods not too long after. I'm currently 24 hours in and thinking about breakfast lol - I'll go slower tomorrow and see if that helps 👍

Healthy fats are another type of food you should be eating like avacados.

You can eat more protein as that will make you feel full for longer.

What are your reasons for fasting? I'm currently doing a fast now and on 21 hours. I have walked over 20,000 steps today so at the moment all I feel like is putting myself to bed lol.

Do you drink anything when fasting?

I would try keeping it low carb before and after a fast as it makes the fast easier in my experience

The fast itself isn't too much of an issue. At 24 hours in I'm not feeling very hungry - I've only had water, but plenty of it. I would like to loose some weight but I'm mainly fasting for the health benefits - I've struggled at times in the past but only recently learned about fasting at particular points in my cycle which seems to be working. Will avoid carbs in the morning and see if that helps too

How was breaking your fast?

BorneoBound · 27/07/2023 18:43

Went a lot better today thanks. I didn't manage to avoid carbs altogether, but only had a very small breakfast, then a small mid morning snack. I had a normal sized lunch and felt fine ☺️ thanks for the advice. Slow and steady definitely helped

Glad all went better.

All the best with your fasts 😀
