Has anyone lost weight doing yoga?

Hello,

I need to lose a bit of weight and I quite fancy doing yoga. Has anyone done it and lost weight successfully?

I’m not obese but could do with losing a stone or two especially as I’m at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

I remember Geri Halliwell’s success with yoga and Annabel Croft (the ex-tennis player) and it looks like something that I’d stick with (the mind benefits too)!

Any success stories out there?

And, can anyone recommend any online classes (free)?

I did when I was doing Bikram yoga daily (90 minutes in 45c burning 1000 calories) alongside a low carb diet

A good vinyasa class might get your heart rate up but other than that it's unlikely yoga will help with weight loss. It will help to strengthen lengthen and tone.

Weight loss is 80% diet 20% exercise.

I do a really hard yoga class and I think it makes a difference, I do sweat and my muscles hurt and I feel as though it's toning me a little. I do run too, though, and it definitely matters what you're eating.

Sadly I don't think it helps with weight loss. In fact it can make you so chilled and calm that it lowers your heart rate rather than raises it. So no fat burning. However, it's absolutely amazing for all sorts of other benefits.

Weight loss is mainly food related but the benefits of exercise are widespread so still do it.

I love Les Mills they have yoga, pilates and body balance all fabulous.

Weight loss happens in the kitchen. Yoga is wonderful for a multitude of reasons and really helps with weight loss because it builds muscle but ONLY if you fix your diet.

I do some Yoga with Adriene sessions on YouTube not to burn calories but to keep my head in the right place and my stress levels down and to help me sleep which I find helps me with weight loss.

If I have lots of sleep I’m less likely to eat because I’m tired and less likely to comfort eat if I’m not stressed.Plus I really enjoy it.

You won’t lose 2 stone with yoga. As pp said, it’s food not exercise that will help you shift the weight. You will need to really be honest with yourself about calories in vs calories out. Yoga is not a high calorie burn.

That said, yoga is fantastic and there are loads of great YouTube classes. Everyone should give it a go and it may help you stay focussed on the diet.

I think that when we do yoga it makes us feel great in ourselves and gets our body working properly (great for muscle tone, circulation, sleep better etc) all of which contribute to weight loss. But importantly when our body is working well we naturally veer towards better foodstuffs and healthier foods. It's like a holistic thing. I find it plays a big part in weight loss, both in helping us to lose weight through exercise etc but also in that when we look after our body we will naturally eat well.

Ok, thanks all! I’ll think about it!

Yes! However, it was because yoga had helped me to focus on both my body and mind. It helped me to relax and taught me how to relate to my body better. I discovered that I could stretch or bend in ways I never thought possible when I quieted my thoughts and concentrated on just one bodily component. I began to value my body more. All I wanted was to give it greater care and just feed it nutritious foods. I also started to get pretty adept at distinguishing between being truly hungry and simply wanting to eat out of boredom or stress. I was more interested in how yoga had helped me become more conscious and present.

With yoga I found I put on weight lol

Justcallmebebes · 18/07/2023 15:02

Bikram yoga will have the weight dropping off. V quickly too if you do a kin of 3 x a week plus other exercise

Slebs always say they use yoga and drinking water. They actually use heavy diets, personal trainers and surgery.

I don’t think yoga will make you lose weight but I’ve found it helps with posture and strength. I’ve been doing yoga with Adriene 3-4 times a week for a couple of months and now have a flat stomach and toned arms for the first time ever! I’m not overweight at the moment but I did used to be, the only thing that helped with that was totally stopping snacks and soft drinks (unfortunately!).

Think I need to start taking your advise.. Thank you

Weren’t Halliwell and Croft always slender, though? Or did they gain weight and shed it having taken up yoga?

I know a few people who practise yoga and they’re all slim come to think of it!
