Intermittent fasting

Does anyone have any tips about making black coffee bearable?! My favourite part of the morning is having a coffee (black with a splash of milk) since fasting I know you're not meant to have milk but black coffee is vile. I'm not getting used to it and it's making me miserable, especially as my nearly 2yo has started waking through the night again.

Any tips ....

I started drinking it black years ago after someone made me a coffee with lumpy gone-off milk 🤢

Ontheflipside_ · 04/07/2023 07:35

Haha 😅 nothing can put me off, not even the thought. I can't explain it but I found hot drinks without milk (black coffee, herbal Tea etc) to make throat feel sore??

Is the small amount of milk in a morning cup of coffee really enough to ruin IF? I doubt it. Have your coffee. Life's too short.

Whatevernext33 · 04/07/2023 10:30

I am in some IF forum groups and some people say to add a teensy amount of Himalayan salt to take away bitterness? Tbh I have just switched to black . You can add milk but it's considered a 'dirty fast' lol, though some people say to go the other way and have thick cream as it has protein at least!?
If you can try black, then it's better but you should still lose weight, might be a bit slower. I am roughly a stone down over 3 months so a good gradual loss.

don't drink instant coffee black. find a really nice filter coffee instead. don't overbrew it, and use water just off the boil rather than boiling. burnt coffee tastes more bitter. instant is gross black! try different types until you find one you really like - maybe a milder strength one would suit you better as less strong??

I fast and have replaced my morning tea with a large glass of water for the same reason. I then break my fast with food and a cup of tea at 10am.

You can have a splash of milk, but it makes you ravenous shortly after. A clean fast keeps the hunger pangs at bay.

I do IF 17/7 and have a splash of milk in 1 cup of tea a day, it hasn't really affected the weight loss, I'm down 9lb over 6 weeks. Maybe it would have been faster without that but I think it's a reasonable rate of loss.

Ontheflipside_ · 04/07/2023 14:10

Thanks all! We have a really nice bean to cup coffee machine and I still can't stand it black. I think I'm just going to have a splash of milk and cut down from 2 coffees to 1. The black coffee just makes me so miserable 😫😂

Sprinkle some Himalayan pink salt in it. Works for me

I have tea with milk first thing. Than black coffee thereafter. I have got used to it but I don’t know if I could face it for my first drink of the day.

UglyModernWindows · 04/07/2023 22:57

Little bit of sea salt or himalayan salt in the coffee makes a difference, try it 😊

I now have double cream in my coffee and it’s so delicious. But it’s only one cup a day and I don’t have it in my IF window.

Ontheflipside_ · 05/07/2023 07:15

Thanks all, I'll give it a go this morning and report back...

My friend is fasting and she said salt in coffee really helps, haven't tried it myself though.

If that's no good then cream instead, which is delicious!

The main thing is not to eat things which spike your insulin. If you are more likely to stick to a fast by having a small amount of milk I would go with this. Jason Fung author of the obesity code approves this

This was really interesting and very helpful! Thank you 😊

Forgot to report back but the salt worked! About half a turn did the trick! Still made me feel a bit 🤢 knowing there was salt in there, but much better! Thank you all

Getting some very nice coffee helps. And pretending to be a Parisian sitting outside at a tabac and definitely not sitting at your dining table shouting "SOCKS, IVE ALREADY TOLD YOU FIVE TIMES!!" at your DC.
