Oh FGS! How on earth can I lose weight with a broken arm?!

I have a big party mid July and was slowly trying to lose some weight (need to lose a stone). I've managed to break a bone in my arm so I'm now more or less housebound as I live rurally and can't drive. I'm able to walk outside and am trying to walk a bit evrry day. I'm BORED and limited on what I can cook, so I'm basically eating loads of toast. I've put on 2lb in a week.

Any tips or experience welcome 🙏

Fage total yoghurt 5% fat is a good dieting snack, you can have it topped with milled linseed and/or frozen berries (I guess you need someone to open the linseed pack in advance and leave it open for you, ideally). The protein helps keep you full.

Limited how? They are out all day. Dh cooks in the evening. I've been eating OK just too much toast as I'm bored and now things have settled I can make a list of healthier, easier foods that I don't need two hands to prepare or eat.

You said you’d been surviving on beans on toast? 😐

pardon me for wondering if you had any adult to assist you! 😂

Zeonlywayisup · 14/05/2023 16:11

@Cazelet i think it naturally makes you drop weight when you start and by the time it bottoms out you’ll be more agile.

Perspectivo · 14/05/2023 16:13

He could make a stew to leave you? Soup? A salad prepared in the morning and left in the fridge for you.

So many options if you live with a adult and presumably a child comfortable using a knife!

No I didn't 😅

I'd love beans on toast occasionally but I can't open a tin 😄

I said I was limited in what I could eat and had been eating loads of toast

Omg. Dog, meet bone.

Yes, they do leave me stuff.

But I'm getting bored and snacking on toast.

Thanks to all those who've given advice for easy healthier snacks/meals

You said “BORED”
I'm basically eating loads of toast
and had put on 2 pounds week!

sort of indicates you are eating pretty much just toast and fed up but “very limited” options 🤷‍♀️

Perspectivo · 14/05/2023 16:18

Ok so you do have variety

it’s a snacking problem.

walk it out! Good luck

I lost 7lbs while I had a leg in a cast. Just need to be determined and plan ahead.

Cazelet · 14/05/2023 17:39

I am trying to plan ahead. That's encouraging!

How are you getting on?

Cazelet · 17/05/2023 09:02

Well I've been eating around 1200 cals a day according to MFP and have put on a 1lb. Had break x rayed again yesterday and it's worse than they initially thought so just going to try and eat healthily, not be stupid with snacks and walk every day. Also giving up booze until its healed. I'll just have to live with being plump for the party in July and buy a nice dress and fake tan!

Less carbs more protein. I throw a couple of chicken breasts in the oven wrapped in foil. Then eat one with a salad and one for tomorrow with a salad. Also sometimes put a bit of salmon on foil in oven with lime juice from a bottle. It cooks in 25 mins and I eat with frozen peas and carrots cooked in saucepan.

Cazelet · 14/05/2023 15:27

Ha - definitely couldn't do this. I bought organic carrots and just eat them whole, ditto celery

You can buy a pack of ready sliced ones in Morrisons.

Yes this is a good idea. I thought I'd been eating a lot of protein but actually not that much according to MFP

I know you said that you don't eat much sugar, but shop bought bread has added sugar. Why? Because people like the taste of that better.

Mine doesn't have sugar in?

I've just picked up an injury, too (nothing as serious as a break!) and suddenly am going to inactive for a while, and I've also gained in just one week. I know the current trend is to emphasise diet over exercise but I have found that exercise is important for not gaining weight, personally.

Rockfordpeach · 17/05/2023 09:16

I'm in the exact same position, I fell and broke my elbow on Friday. It's bloody agony and I can't even walk much because walking jogs it and it's so painful. I've ordered ready meals to easily prepare and eat one handed to stay in my calories. It's hard not to comfort eat while in pain and exhausted from not sleeping properly, you have my sympathies

Helpful Mumsnet Top Tips: Break both, then you can't use the toaster.

Oh god poor you that sounds awful 😖 at least mine is not too bad while in a sling and kept straight. You are right, comfort eating sounds lovely about now and that's the worry, that I'll end up absolutely huge. I think ready meals are the way to go.

Annoyingly dd3 is a really good cook and has just made some lovely looking banana bread AND she makes her own peanut butter with peanuts, olive oil and a bit of agave. It's like crack and obviously a million calories per spoonful

I haven't been weight lifting for two weeks now and although it's not supposed to burn many calories it clearly does as I'm definitely putting on weight. I might try and at least do some squats today but my balance is a bit fucked.

OP posts:
waistchallenge · 17/05/2023 09:27

Ooh, I don't know if squats with a broken arm and balance issues are really a good idea, sorry. Maybe a physio could suggest something more appropriate?

waistchallenge · 17/05/2023 09:28

Or just rest, you will be better before you know it and can continue then.
