Oh FGS! How on earth can I lose weight with a broken arm?!

I have a big party mid July and was slowly trying to lose some weight (need to lose a stone). I've managed to break a bone in my arm so I'm now more or less housebound as I live rurally and can't drive. I'm able to walk outside and am trying to walk a bit evrry day. I'm BORED and limited on what I can cook, so I'm basically eating loads of toast. I've put on 2lb in a week.

Any tips or experience welcome 🙏

Biscuits get dunked straight in!

As long as I can open the packets which tbh is the hardest part of this so far

You need some firm biscuits then to avoid carnage in the cream cheese tub?’!!

Cazelet · 14/05/2023 15:37

Or I could do - cracker nom, whole unpeeled carrot in cream cheese nom, ditto celery.

Buy ready cut carrot batons then?

Not sure how a broken arm would stop you losing weight? Just carry on with your walking and stop eating toast?

Buy some low calorie ready meals you can stick in the microwave for dinner or pre-packaged salads. Fruit can be grabbed from the bowl. Jacket potato can be shoved in the oven.

Do you have "Cook" in your area? They do reasonably healthy ready meals and could help you while you can't cook and help with not resorting to toast.

It's a tough thing to happen but if you can keep the right mindset you'll get through it.

Work out your TDEE and eat less calories than you need- log everything on my fitnesspal

Do squats and lunges with a weight at home; star jumps, fast feet, find a 10,000 steps video on YouTube...

A broken arm is just another excuse to be honest- I follow a weightlifter who has one arm, and she is absolutely buff!

Of course, it's not an excuse! Someone who only has one arm and who is used to living like that for years is in a completely different situation to someone who has just broken her arm.

Great advice thanks.

Thanks, I think there's a farm shop nearby that does them, I'll get dh to pop in

Yeah I'm still reeling at the idea of doing star jumps tbh.

You must be careful with what you do, I broke a limb (leg) once, too and they told me it's not uncommon for people to get in an accident again through overdoing it or tripping over crutches, falling down stairs etc. and end up doubly injured.

Yes, I feel a bit raw and vulnerable at the moment as only did it a week ago. I think gentle short walks are probably enough for a couple of weeks as I don't have much balance with only one working arm (so very different to someone who is used to having one arm and no pain!). I've been out for a couple of hours today walking about and helping dd at a sports thing and it's bloody sore now!

Yes.

For how long out of interest?

Do you live rurally?

Cazelet · 14/05/2023 15:54

Perspectivo · 14/05/2023 15:53

Have you been signed off work?

Yes - they are going to set up wfh for me as I can't drive (rural). I'll wfh for a bit and get a taxi in once a week for the next few weeks.

Ah you have DH

well then surely you can eat pretty much anything as he will assist where you can’t?

Perspectivo · 14/05/2023 16:01

Cazelet · 14/05/2023 16:00

Why?

Because I can’t understand how you’re so limited re what you’ve been eating!

Do you think that helps? Dd is gluten-free so we have plenty of gf stuff in the house.

Limited how? They are out all day. Dh cooks in the evening. I've been eating OK just too much toast as I'm bored and now things have settled I can make a list of healthier, easier foods that I don't need two hands to prepare or eat.

The only thing I would say in addition to the above, is generally it’s better to eat 3 meals and lay off the snacks. It’s not a blanket rule - mini meals suit some
people - but for most snacking equals overeating
