Simple changes to start my weight loss journey

I've got between 6 and 7 stone to lose, 5 of those to take me from obese to maximum end of healthy weight.

I'm thinking of simple things to start my weight loss journey.

  1. 10,000 steps a day.
  2. 5 portions of fruit and veg a day
  3. 6 - 8 glasses of water a day
  4. 7 - 8 hours sleep a day
  5. a multi vitamin to help for where I lack

Is there any thing else I can do that is simple but will help kick off my weight loss journey?

Thanks

All those things are good. Sleep and water probably the best place to start.

Intermittent fasting was what cracked it for me. I’ve lost 6 stone (and counting) and it all started with that. I don’t eat between 8pm and midday the next day. I also cook from scratch every weekday and ensure my meals are 90% protein and veg, very low carb, but the IF came first and it was a magic wand for me. I find it so easy to stick to now. Occasionally I’ll have breakfast at the weekend as a treat, but mostly I’m not hungry before 1pm and even then all I want is yoghurt and fruit.

They are all great!

And aim for 10 servings of 80g fruit and vegetables, that is where true health benefits begin, the 5 a day was what the government thought they could convince people to eat, rather than the scientific advice! There are many countries who have the higher recommendation.

Another few things to look at are things like added sugars in drinks like coffee etc, or how much milk/alternative you use, size of glass of fruit juice, or if you drink fizzy drinks with sugar. Drink calories can add up so fast without being noticed.

I sleep so badly I wish I could do better at that.

@WeirdPookah I drink a lot of tea with 2 sugars so could start by cutting down to 1 sugar. Other than that it's just water

That would be useful, halving the calories from sugar you get. You could start with 1.5 tsp and see how it goes if it's hard to cut down.
When you like your tea a certain way it's hard to change! It's why I make an allowance in my calories to have oatmilk and milk in my coffee, a decent amount which I heat up, so that I actually enjoy my coffee.

*oatmilk OR milk, not together! yuk!

Identify if you are an abstained or a moderator. Can you have one piece of chocolate (for example) and stop or is it a trigger for eating the whole pack?

This was a revelation for me. I know now not to start anything, even a nibble. Also to avoid having the triggering food in the house. If you have others in the house buy stuff they like and you done e.g. I hate ginger biscuits!

Another thing is to try to make the early stages where you are cutting things out, as convenient as possible. Plan out a few simple but delicious meals that you can make quickly even if it means buying some pre prepared food. Make it easier to avoid easy unhealthy stuff.

One of mine is Bacon and goats cheese salad where I buy precooked bacon/chicken. Not ideal i know i feel worth it. Then I can just chuck it on a plate, bagged salad, chop cucumber, little grated carrot, olive oil and done.

Abstainer that should say in the first sentence!

HealthConcerns · 05/04/2023 19:21

@Luckydog7 I'm absolutely an abstainer. I can go without things easily (once the initial cravings have gone anyway). I can't just eat one biscuit etc as I'll want more. Not necessarily that day but every day
