How does metafit/ hiit burn calories after?

I know fitness watches aren’t majorly accurate but I did 30 minutes of metafit (like a HIIT workout) and it said on my fitbit I burnt 150 calories.

I was working quite hard and my heart rate was highest at 157bpm.

When looking into it it says your body continues to burn up to 500 calories after the class.

Can someone explain how this works and if this is true?

It's called EPOC. Any form of exercise will render the same benefit though it's not unique to HIIT. You're better off doing zone 2 cardio which means you're working hard but could hold a conversation at the same time.

does that mean that exercising hard 5x/day for 10 minutes at a time, ends up burning more calories than exercising hard for 50 minutes just once a day?

No. Unless you're going balls to the wall where you can barely breath for those 10 minutes you're far better off going on a treadmill, as steep an incline as you can manage without holding on.

not sure you answered my question, would 5 small bursts of hard cardio many times a day better for expending calories than one single hard session for same total time (on paper) ?

It depend on your body -as to how much you burn

If you are tall and male and muscular you might burn 500

Smaller , female ,and more usual muscle tone and you burn much less

As a rule of thumb you don't burn much from exercising

It's highly unlikely to ever get to 500- it's been shown that this 'afterburn' is mostly a myth tbh.

I always say that the best / most effective exercise for getting fit / losing weight / building strength is...

The one you enjoy the most Grin

Don't worry about anything else - just find something you love and that will help massively with the consistency you need to get results.
