Fasting

Paperdoll44 · 19/01/2023 18:59

I’m currently doing Keto and 16:8 with very slow, and limited results. I have about a stone and a half I want to lose.

I’ve read on here about how it doesn’t take much to break a fast - a splash of milk in coffee or a chewing gum can effectively ruin it.

This may be a daft question but I take my contraceptive pill in the morning with my (black) coffee. I also take d mannose to keep UTIs at bay. I also take some supplements (magnesium and b complex) before I go to sleep. My eating window is 12-8 so these little daily rituals fall outside my eating window.

Could my pill and my supplements be sabotaging my 16:8 or am I clutching at straws?

Thanks.

Clutching. Supplements are usually best taken with food or so it says on the packets. There are some absolute batshit opinions on here so I'd not be taking advice from here much. You are best off speaking to a personal trainer, medical professional/dietician/nutritionist. They will probably all tell you a balanced diet with regular exercise is the way to go.

DillDanding · 19/01/2023 19:08

I’d be amazed if they were. Are you using anything to check ketones? I take magnesium daily and it doesn’t throw me out of ketosis.

I am also doing fasting and keto and have lost 15lbs since 3rd Jan. I’m not overweight so I’ve been thrilled with such a good loss (I’ve heard it’s slower if you’re not fat).

Paperdoll44 · 19/01/2023 19:33

I agree Autisticlegolover, there are some odd opinions on here. I’m doing keto, not just for the weight loss but also for the many (apparent) health benefits.

Dilldanding - that’s an incredible amount. We’ll done! Do you feel better doing keto/16:8?

Well done not we’ll done!!

Paperdoll44 yes, I feel fabulous.

My only issue is I don’t feel hungry and have to force myself to eat.

AutisticLegoLover · 19/01/2023 20:10

How awful for you.

Paperdoll44 · 19/01/2023 20:17

Dilldanding - I suppose if you’re making yourself eat, you’re not susceptible to cravings do you can pick healthy options. Sounds like a win win situation to me :)

I suppose I’ll just have to stick at it and be patient.

You get some particularly hardcore tasters who won't take a drop of milk but I drink tea and coffee with it and never had much of an issue with ketosis/weight loss and I don't think your supplements would prevent it either.
Might be best to look at the foods you are eating within your window.

hobbledyhoy · 19/01/2023 22:00

Fasters not tasters!

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 19/01/2023 22:03

It’s likely you’re overeating in your window. Just because you’re fasting, it doesn’t mean you can eat with abandon when you’re not. It’s still just calories in vs calories out.

Verite1 · 19/01/2023 22:08

16:8 never worked for me. 5:2 did and now I’m older, it needs to be 3:4 or even 4:3!

TalkToTheHand123 · 19/01/2023 22:15

What kind of foods are you eating @Paperdoll44 ?

The latest 'expert' is that it's not about the eating window but more about the typest of food that is eaten (which does seem logical).

1982mommaof4 · 19/01/2023 22:16

I have just started this and am starving 😂 can you put a tiny bit of squash in your water?

Paperdoll44 · 20/01/2023 11:58

I don’t think squash is allowed 1982 but I could be wrong (perhaps it’s okay if it’s zero sugar).

I think it could be (as PPs said) I’m not eating the right things in the right amounts. I suspect I’m over doing the fat. Yesterday I had:

-two boils eggs with a bit of full fat mayonnaise on.
-Milkshake (full pint) - approx 50% water, 40% double cream, a tablespoon of whey protein, two tablespoons peanut butter.
-piece of salmon with broccoli (with butter on) and a fried egg
-raspberries and cream

I had read that the aim was high fat but low carb but I think I’m eating too much fat.

I appreciate now that this question should be in the low carb or fasting board but appreciate the replies anyway.

thanks

What types of food are you speaking of @TalkToTheHand123?

timmothysmith01 · 14/02/2023 14:34

By extending the time until your body has burnt through the calories from your most recent meal and starts burning fat, intermittent fasting works.

TalkToTheHand123 · 16/02/2023 22:44

@canina foods like pizza, chocolate, drinks like alcohol, pop. I'd imagine binging on this even in small windows would lead to weight gain.

YourWinter · 16/02/2023 23:31

I’ve greatly reduced my fat intake as I’ve had occasional painful symptoms consistent with possible gallstones. I wanted to lose some weight anyway, a couple of stone at most. I’ve cut out red meat and switched to skimmed milk and reduced-fat cheese, lost 15 lbs since Christmas.

I found a book in a charity shop with quick recipes for “fast days” on the 5:2 diet and I’m giving it a go. On Monday and Thursday I eat only during a 10 hour window, 09.00 to 19.00, so fasting for 14 hours, aiming for 500 calories. The other 5 days I have around 1200 calories, up to 1500. I’m not hungry, nor lacking energy or sleep. The only thing I miss on fast days is a ginger nut biscuit late in the evening, I just have an extra glass of water with a slice of lemon and/or a slice of ginger in it.

Today I had:

09.00 hot water with fresh lemon, ginger, cinnamon, 1 tbsp cider vinegar, 1 tsp runny honey

09.30 a poached egg on 120g shredded pak choi, stir fried with 3 mushrooms in 1-cal spray

14.00 a banana

18.00 2 ladles of home made parsnip, carrot and lentil soup with chilli flakes, and a stick of celery to dip

18.30 135g fat-free Greek yogurt with 3 sliced strawberries and 2 tbsp blueberries

2 cups of tea with a splash of skimmed milk

Total 513 calories
17% fat
20% protein
62% carbs, I should have had a pear instead of the banana!

The main contributors to weight loss have been reducing fats - I love butter, cream, cheese - and reducing bread and biscuits. I used to have a slice or two of buttered toast with cheese or marmite, or 2-3 biscuits, just waiting for the kettle to boil, there are days now when I will still have ONE biscuit!

OutDamnedSpot · 16/02/2023 23:37

It might be the D Manosse. It’s a form of sugar isn’t it? I take it too and have moved it to my non-fasting hours. I’m also stalling though. I lost the first 6-7lb really easily but now I’m struggling for even 1lb a week.
