I’ve greatly reduced my fat intake as I’ve had occasional painful symptoms consistent with possible gallstones. I wanted to lose some weight anyway, a couple of stone at most. I’ve cut out red meat and switched to skimmed milk and reduced-fat cheese, lost 15 lbs since Christmas.
I found a book in a charity shop with quick recipes for “fast days” on the 5:2 diet and I’m giving it a go. On Monday and Thursday I eat only during a 10 hour window, 09.00 to 19.00, so fasting for 14 hours, aiming for 500 calories. The other 5 days I have around 1200 calories, up to 1500. I’m not hungry, nor lacking energy or sleep. The only thing I miss on fast days is a ginger nut biscuit late in the evening, I just have an extra glass of water with a slice of lemon and/or a slice of ginger in it.
Today I had:
09.00 hot water with fresh lemon, ginger, cinnamon, 1 tbsp cider vinegar, 1 tsp runny honey
09.30 a poached egg on 120g shredded pak choi, stir fried with 3 mushrooms in 1-cal spray
14.00 a banana
18.00 2 ladles of home made parsnip, carrot and lentil soup with chilli flakes, and a stick of celery to dip
18.30 135g fat-free Greek yogurt with 3 sliced strawberries and 2 tbsp blueberries
2 cups of tea with a splash of skimmed milk
Total 513 calories
17% fat
20% protein
62% carbs, I should have had a pear instead of the banana!
The main contributors to weight loss have been reducing fats - I love butter, cream, cheese - and reducing bread and biscuits. I used to have a slice or two of buttered toast with cheese or marmite, or 2-3 biscuits, just waiting for the kettle to boil, there are days now when I will still have ONE biscuit!
