New activity to burn fat

TheQueenOfHearts · 21/12/2022 09:26

I am super motivated to start a diet and get healthier in the new year. I do have about 10 kilos to lose (more like 15 but hey you have to be realistic), in my forties and my desire to get back in shape is mostly motivated by having lost my mum to cancer last year.

I am member of a gym with loads of classes. I want to try a new activity that will help me burn fat quick but that wouldn't be too intense. I usually swim, do yoga, this sort of things.

Any recommendations welcome!

Weights burn fat

Lifting weights and compound exercises burn the most. Like squats, lunges, planks and push ups. It’s no easy though and there are no short cuts. But once you start to see results it’s very rewarding and makes you feel amazing.

You’d be best to pay for a session or two with a PT and ask for a routine. Most classes tend to be cardio based unless yoga or pilates. But doing those for 1-2 week is not going to do much for your muscles or bone density.

Body pump is weights and it's fab

Running at a slowish pace burns fat.

Another vote for weights. I like to do a mix of weights and cardio, so a couple of strength classes and a couple of spin a week, maybe a swim on the weekend.

Am I going to be able to even survive the first classes?

Yes you will survive

Go very light with the weight and don't go above the warm up weight in the first session , and stop when you need to

The first few times you are learning the form of the movement ( it's safer that way ) and then you think about adding weight once that is sorted

Findyourneutralspace · 21/12/2022 18:43

You’ll survive! Get there a few minutes early and tell the instructor it’s your first class. They will help you adapt anything to your capability and show you what weights to use, how to set up any equipment etc.
I always think it takes 4 classes of something new to get into your stride but stick with it!

no, weights do not burn fat. They prevent muscle loss as weight is lost. And if you're not finding them a bit difficult, you're not lifting enough.

The only way to lose fat is by being in a calorie deficit.

By all means exercise, but if you're not thinking about your eating habits, it's likely to be disappointing.

Yes as I explained I will be changing my diet so being in calorie deficit is on the card. I was asking for a class/activity that would help accelerate fat burning.

And the answer is just that- none!

No exercise 'accelerates fat burning'

Diet drives weight loss, exercise drives maintenance of weight

Gardening burns LOTS of calories

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 23/12/2022 13:34

Any Raquets sport

Addictive, fun, burns calories and helps develop muscle and metabolism

I work as a gardener. If that were really true, I wouldn't need to watch what I eat.

zumba! It’s fun, burns a surprising amount of calories and tones you up in all the right places. I really miss my gym membership as I had a fantastic instructor there
