Calorie counting or something else?

I have been overweight for a long time and I really need to sort it. I've tried every diet and fad going and always manage to lose a little bit then give up, but this time I'm determined. I've joined a gym with a friend and have been enjoying that. I just don't know what to do in regards to eating/dieting. In the past I've struggled with binge eating and disordered eating, and I found that calorie counting really made me spiral as I became too fixated on how much sugar I was eating, whether I was hitting my macros, eating enough protein etc. But I know that it works if you stick at it.

Are there any better ideas or anything I'm missing? Or are there any more simple calorie counting apps that just focus on calories rather than macros? I've done SW in the past but found it hard to know whether I was over eating or not
