Expressing extra milk for weight loss?

Just curious really if this would work! I've managed to get back to pre-preg weight okay anyway, but wondering if I breastfeed again with future baby...

If the baby eats roughly 8 times a day, and extra calories required for breastfeeding are roughly 500... does that mean I could express and dump for around 50 calories a pop? I have always struggled to manage oversupply so I don't think supply would be an issue for say an extra two feeds a day.

It can't be that easy! Would an extra two feeds lead to vitamin deficiency of any kind for me? Seems unlikely since people manage to breastfeed twins sometimes?

Has anyone done it successfully?

Seriously?

ehb102 · 03/07/2022 12:36

That's like asking if running will.make you thinner. Only if you don't eat to compensate.

Breastfeeding made me hang on to extra weight. Plus the hunger was like nothing else.

BreadScientista · 03/07/2022 13:11

I stayed the size I was until I stopped breastfeeding as much 😖 also it will tire you out and be such an unnecessary thing, could lead to engorgement also? I wouldn't bother personally

Cranberryclover · 03/07/2022 13:43

I only lost weight when I stopped breastfeeding!! I also pumped, but just for supply etc.

Orangio · 03/07/2022 19:56

Ach well, probably not a goer then 😆
Breastfeeding does make me lose weight if I am careful not to eat the extra 500 cals. I just thought I could help the process along a wee bit!!

Yes you could. I lost loads of weight breast feeding and did have more than I needed (I pumped and froze).

Hard not to eat it back though as you get hungry in a pretty intense way.

toastfiend · 03/07/2022 20:18

If you struggle with over supply anyway then expressing unnecessarily is going to make that struggle significantly harder.

I really wouldn't do it. I lost weight breastfeeding, but it levelled out at a certain point and it certainly wasn't enough that it would make the hassle of expressing and screwing up your supply worthwhile. You can burn more calories going for a walk or a jog and it's better for you.

Orangio · 03/07/2022 22:36

Yes, walking is definitely better, and I do lots, but there's a finite amount I can do in a day so I was just wondering about other sneaky weight loss hacks 😁You're right about the oversupply getting worse though... I hadn't thought of that.
And MotherOfCrocs is right about the hunger. I can deal with BF hunger, but BF-and-extra-pumping hunger might break me.
I am convinced! Bad plan!
