So yesterday I was doing a bit of gardening .

83 year old bright as a button neighbour walks past " hello , isn't it a nice day bla bla bla " then says " my goodness you've piled on a bit of weight haven't you !"

Really didn't know if I should laugh or cry so I laughed and then I went in and cried .

I can't deny it but don't think I'd ever have done that to anyone ..

Gutted 😞 am I being too sensitive ? I mean I did already know , just not sure why it's hurt me so much

Well it's touched a nerve

Hearing a similiar comment actually spurred me on to lose weight a few years back. Everyone was ignoring my weight gain . That didn't help

I've a relative who said this. The next time he saw me I'd lost two stone!

Shedcity · 14/06/2022 22:31

I think it’s rude.
nobody needs to make observations or judgements on anyone else’s body out loud
i think the ‘different generation’ thing is said a lot so maybe it wasn’t intended to be rude
but doesn’t mean it’s not!
Sorry it hurt your feelings op

someone told me I’d gained weight once when I was definitely still a very healthy weight and I still cried, so I don’t think it’s necessarily that it’s ‘touched a nerve’ and the truth that’s upset you
but possibly that’s adding to it if it’s a moment of realisation for you.

Rude! Next time they pass greet them brightly with, "Gosh you're looking really old lately! You should do something about it, have you tried Vaseline?"

EmmaH2022 · 15/06/2022 00:35

Incredibly rude
one of mum's friends said this to me and I was desperately upset

to make matters worse, he started on about a bloke we knew in the same age group as me who had just had a heart attack.

it took every ounce of self control not to point out that a fatal heart attack would not be unwelcome. But then he'd have driven mum up the wall trying to get me "help".

anyway, allegedly she told him never to say anything like that again but I still avoid him. If I see him again, I'll just have to say I've added in smoking and drinking since lockdown 😂

Thank you .. I really appreciate these kind words

My MIL told me I'd put on a good deal of weight since she last saw me. It's true, and I knew it, and in a way I'm kind of grateful because here I am back at Nutracheck on a calorie controlled diet. It'll work because physics - less calories in than I need = weight loss. Well, it works for me anyway.

So I guess I'm grateful in an ungrateful way.....
