Sugar free squash instead of Diet Coke

Trying to quit the diet Coke and replacing with sugar free squash. Do you think this will help with weight loss?

Only if you eat less too

rainbowandglitter · 11/05/2022 14:06

Neither have any calories but both have artificial sweetners so surely both the same?

marshmallowmama · 11/05/2022 14:08

@dementedpixie sorry I should have said that I am dieting/calorie counting too

This.

There is no difference

marshmallowmama · 11/05/2022 14:09

@rainbowandglitter I agree, but sugar free squash doesn't get as much bad press and Diet Coke. I think the DC bloats me so I'm wondering if cutting it out will make a difference

dementedpixie · 11/05/2022 14:09

Changing one drink for the other won't make much difference as neither contain added sugar. The squash may contain natural sugars though

JustALittleHelpPlease · 11/05/2022 14:10

I understand the artificial sweetener makes it harder to beat the sugar cravings - as both are packed full of it how about switching to plain water or hot water with mint leaves/fennel? In my opinion sweeteners are more harmful than sugar but that isn't the relevant point here.

dementedpixie · 11/05/2022 14:10

You may be less gassy and you will be taking in less caffeine but I doubt it would help with weight loss

marshmallowmama · 11/05/2022 14:13

@JustALittleHelpPlease I am drinking more water now too but instead of having 5 + diet cokes a day I was gonna replace with squash at meal times ( so that plain water doesn't become too boring all the time)

I 100% agree about the sweetener being worse than sugar tho.

No advice on weight loss (here from Active) but it will certainly help your teeth. My dentist has no problem with sugar free squash (and says he mostly drinks that too) but is very clear that fizzy drinks and juice should be drank rarely, and only with meals if you do choose them.

I know there is school of though also that drinking diet soda can trigger appetite as an insulin response is triggered by the sweet taste, but then you overeat when your body doesn’t get the sugar it expects. I don’t know if that would be the same for sugar free squash though.

Magenta82 · 11/05/2022 14:16

could you maybe tweak the diet/meal plan to work in one can of real coke?

Thekormachameleon · 11/05/2022 14:16

Won't make a difference to weight loss as neither contain any real calories

Squash is however better for you than Diet Coke as it's majority plain water rather than a fan of fizzy chemicals

Amichelle84 · 11/05/2022 14:16

They're both the same really but if you're having 5+ diet cokes a day that's not good and will probably make you really bloated.

The best thing would be water but if you need some flavour the squash probably isn't as bad for you as the DC.

marshmallowmama · 11/05/2022 14:21

Thanks so much for all your helpful replies. Can I ask what sort of drinks you all have? Is water the big player here with most of you? I've been so bad with my water intake but I'm trying to get better.

@marshmallowmama the other thing that helps dieting is realigning your taste - allowing yourself to become used to things being less sweet. Drinking coke or squash won't help that happen.

If you're looking for an alternative that isn't water what about using fresh orange diluted? It is fresh tasting but not sickly sweet. It does take a bit of time to get used to it not being as thick and sharp as you're expecting but I find it works (particularly in summer with ice 😀)

dementedpixie · 11/05/2022 14:51

I drink a couple of cups of tea per day with about 1 teaspoon of sugar in each. I drink water at sports classes and then have a glass or 2 of fizzy diet juice at night. Some have caffeine and some don't. I dont drink squash but the kids do

toastofthetown · 11/05/2022 14:53

I drink tea, coffee and sugar free squash. I really struggle with hydration in general (I’ve only had one coffee today and I’m not thirsty). I find that if I pour a glass of water in the morning I just don’t tend to reach for it and at the end of the day I pour away over half undrunk. Whereas with squash I will drink a couple of glasses if I keep it near me and as I have no issues with sweeteners the benefit to drinking more outweighs the benefits of only drinking water.

I drink loads of water. Always have. I don't like fizzy. I have a cup of tea in the morning and one in the evening. Other than that it's water.

Fairislefandango · 11/05/2022 15:45

It won't make any difference to weight loss compared with diet coke. It's best to avoid sweet drinks altogether imo, whether they've got sugar or sweeteners or both. They increase your constant reliance on sweet hits, and they are full of artificial crap.

I drink water, tea and herbal tea. I just don't drink sweet things. I'm not even keen on sweet alcoholic drinks. Don't get me wrong- I have quite a sweet tooth, but for food not drinks.

Menora · 11/05/2022 19:43

I love Diet Coke and Coke Zero. Since I started eating cleaner I realise I cannot stand the taste of Pepsi max anymore, it smells and tastes weird! I can smell and taste the artificial sweetener.

I limit myself to only 2 cans a day now. I think you need to cut down 1 can a day for a week, then 2nd week have only 3 cans and move down to 1 or 2 slowly. Drinking sugar free squash should be fine but I would focus on cutting down the coke overall

Theladywithpinkhair · 11/05/2022 19:48

Yes!! Honestly with Diet Coke I piled on the pounds and still can't work out why?!

I had a stroke last year (luckily everything still works!) but I forgot everything - including the taste of Diet Coke!! It's the only way I could stop drinking it, to forget what it tasted like 😂😂 it's so addictive honestly.

When I'm at my healthiest I just drink a tea in the morning then water and herbal tea.

Now...I drink 8 cups of tea a day and full sugar squash with the odd coffee thrown in. Never really been one for fizzy drinks unless I'm hungover or really hot.

newtb · 11/05/2022 19:54

Apparently all diet drinks, Coke squash etc provoke an insulin response do are best avoided. According to my endocrinologist.

user1497787065 · 11/05/2022 20:04

I drink quite a lot of water with a a squeeze of lemon or lime juice.

jeffersonsam · 13/05/2022 14:48

Avoiding artificial cool drink will boosting so much problem in the body, it will also encourage the body weight, so better to stay away from this type of cool drinks. I always drink fresh fruits juice and coconut water. This will makes me to lose more body weight easily without taking huge amount of workout.
