What’s your best weight loss tip?!

Normando91 · 25/03/2022 21:17

Bought myself some lovely trousers today… none of them fit/don’t make me look all lumpy and bumpy 😩
I had a baby 9 months ago and I think I’ve just been using that as an excuse to put on more and more weight! I’m constantly shattered and find myself skipping meals and then bingeing on crap. I need to stop and start making healthy choices and shift this weight, I’ve never been this heavy before and it’s starting to get me down.

So what are your best weight loss tips?! Any meal inspiration as I’m not very adventurous when it comes to cooking. Ideally I’d like to cut out meat as much as possible, even just having it for one or two evening meals a week… possibly not at all. I love all fruit and veg, I’ve just gotten so lazy!!

This is not helpful in the least but I'd be very interested in seeing the tips you receive too. Desperately want to loose some weight. Feel awful in all my clothes.

ihatethecold · 25/03/2022 21:24

Intermittent fasting
Only eat (sensibly) in an 8 hour window

Zero app helps me do this everyday.
Start of with 12 hours fasting and build up slowly.
It’s easy once you get used to it.

SaxendaSummer · 25/03/2022 21:28

watch the carbs. dont cut them out completely

up your protein intake

Gwenhwyfar · 25/03/2022 21:30

Intermittent fasting only worked at the beginning, doesn't work for me any more. What has worked is using My Fitness Pal and batch cooking low calorie meals.

Hellocatshome · 25/03/2022 21:31

WW is working wonders for me at the moment.

Cuzco · 25/03/2022 21:34

No magic answers. No faddy diets. Boring old calorie counting (I used My Fitness Pal). Strong willpower. Don't buy anything into the house which you binge on. And I had to stop making excuses for snacking on crap 'I'm tired' 'I've had a bad day at work' 'the kids have been a nightmare today'.

BIWI · 25/03/2022 21:35

Whatever plan/diet you decide to follow, make sure you really plan and prepare for it. Plan your meals and shop for those plans and make sure you don't have any foods in the house that might tempt you.

Write down everything that you have eaten and drunk, every day so that you're accountable - and be totally honest about it.

And tell everyone what you're doing. Don't let other people derail you.

itstrue · 25/03/2022 21:37

Calorie counting - it's the only way

Drink lots of water and get a step counter

Discwriter · 25/03/2022 21:38

My fitness pal is working for me so far, as is increasing my protein and knowing what I'll eat for dinner. I sometimes only plan in the morning but still.

ClemDanFango · 25/03/2022 21:39

Water.
Hungry? Drink water 1st to make sure it’s not actually thirst.
Drink water when you feel ‘snacky’ then drink some more.
Drink more water before meals
At least 2litres a day. This really helped me to snack less, feel fuller quicker when eating which meant I ate less.

PurpleDaisies · 25/03/2022 21:41

Meal plan so it’s easier to make good food choices when you’re knackered
Weigh carbs
Batch cook so there’s always something easy and healthy in the freezer
Plan for snacks so you eat them in a controlled way!
Don’t have really tempting stuff in the house (crisps for me)
If you have a moment of weakness, just brush it off and don’t turn it into an evening/weekend of totally falling off the wagon

PurpleDaisies · 25/03/2022 21:42

It’s worth having a week of weighing everything to make sure your portions haven’t accidentally grown

etulosba · 25/03/2022 21:45

Eat less. It can be hard, but it works.

bluesky45 · 25/03/2022 21:47

Calorie counting and portion sizes. It was literally the only way. Also, keep busy so you don't snack (lots of walks to keep you moving while not eating too!), meal planning for all meals, put the calories for those meals in my fitness Pal in the morning so you can see what's left.
It's basically calories in being less than calories out.
Portion sizes were the big one for me, turned out I was eating nearly 3 portions of pasta for tea each night!
I lost 2 stone doing this from August to December.

Normando91 · 25/03/2022 21:48

Thanks so much for all these tips so far!!
I’m going to use Click and Collect for groceries now as I find it so much easier to avoid junk when it’s not there in front of me in the shop 🙈

After trying all the faddy diets known to man... I have finally started to lose slowly and consistently by calorie counting, massively reducing sugar and refined carbs, upping protein.
Exercising consistently 4 times a week, including cardio and weights and ensuring I hit a min of 10K steps a day.

I still have a few treats e.g dark choc and slimline G&T in the week, if I deprive myself fully, I binge simple as that.

Meal planning and making healthy snacks the day before and planning 30-60mins of working out/walking in the week.

Also thinking even if have a less then perfect meal I don't have to ruin the rest of the day/week.
I still get frustrated as it's a bit of a slog and slow results but I figure I'm going in the right direction.

JulieYS · 25/03/2022 21:49

I feel you! I remember putting so much time/energy into looking after the kids that my own needs always came last.

For me this is what helped in a nutshell: keep active (walks with baby in the stroller), stop buying sweet treats, and try to eat a balanced diet of different colours (perhaps reducing portion sizes, especially carbs, though you do need some for energy). Even if it's just a bag of prepped salad, sprinkled with a few croutons, smoked salmon - and a drizzle of good dressing makes all the difference (I love honey and mustard). If you get peckish in between meals, try nibbling on a few nuts or some fruit.

If it means some house chores don't get done, so be it. Both you and baby come first together.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 25/03/2022 22:09

I dropped just over 4 stone in 6 months. 13 something to 9stone. My tips are;

  1. move, get moving, walk everywhere and as often as you can. If work makes thus difficult get a trampette and get those steps!

  2. cut back on fat and sugar keep calories lowish (1200/1400) mon- Thursday, let your hair down a bit with a mini blow out Friday- su da

  3. cut back on alcohol calories but not completely

dipdye · 25/03/2022 22:12

Low carbing.

Donr drink your cals... I. E. Milky coffees, full fat pop, beer, wine etc. Just have water, diet soda and filter coffee.

Gwenhwyfar · 26/03/2022 09:38

"Donr drink your cals... I. E. Milky coffees,"

I have a choco cappucino every day and have been losing weight successfully. I just factor it in and count it on MyFitnessPal.
It's also possible to lose weight while drinking alcohol. Some people have a long weightloss journey ahead of them and can't be t-total for that whole time.

nomistake · 26/03/2022 09:42

Calorie counting, lower carb, higher protein, fasting (or skipping meals if we're being real).

colouringindoors · 26/03/2022 09:46

Low carbing is most effective for me. I've found the "rules" of the low carb, high protein and fat bootcamp on mumsnet diet section really helpful. I allow a little treat fri night and sat night to keep me going... (bootcamp lite) The first week is the hardest - stopping sugar, but the weight loss is very encouraging. I've also found cutting sugar is better for my energy levels.

Drink lots of water.

Don't do it alone - whether its SW, WW, or a thread on here I find it helps.

samthebordercollie · 26/03/2022 09:47

Don't diet, they don't work long term. Change your way of eating.

  1. Cut out all refined flour products (bread, pasta, cakes etc.)
  2. Reduce sugar intake as much as possible
  3. Increase fibre intake (eat lots of vegetables)
  4. Don't snack between meals
  5. Try time restricted eating (skip breakfast, once you get used to it it's easy)
  6. Make your gut microbiome happy by eating at least 30 different plants a week (including vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices, légumes, nuts). A dish like lentil spinach dahl curry is excellent for this as it contains at least 12 different plants

Move as much as possible of course if sport isn't possible with a baby to look after.

You DO NOT need to count calories to lose weight.

Onlyhonest · 26/03/2022 09:49

Go to bed hungry.

I ate toast at bedtime for years. I have finally given it up and it helps plus I feel better in the morning if I don’t eat in the evening.

LondonQueen · 26/03/2022 09:50

Drink a glass of water before every meal, helps me eat less.
