Giving up wine

Has anyone out there managed to lose a substantial amount of weight by giving up wine alone?

Wine alone no, but I wouldn't have been able to do it without giving up wine.

Wine is a major issue for me - I give it up for months on end and lose a considerable amount of weight. What usually ends that is I slip back into my wine habit and before I know it I'm gaining weight again.

I'm in a gaining cycle at the moment - and all of that is pretty much down to wine. I think if I stopped drinking the wine the weight gain would stop and I would then lose but very slowly. I don't keep it up long enough for it to be considerable without also restricting food calories too.

It is definitely time for me to stop the wine again.

It’s difficult isn’t it. I’m trying to cut down as I have high blood pressure. I have given up cake, biscuits, chocolate and even cit down on bread, but wine is difficult.

Btw this thread is not for those people who want to throw in their two penny halfpenny worth of criticism,

No, not with giving up wine alone but you definitely need to cut back to lose weight. Saying that, I didn't need to give it up entirely to lose weight, just reduce my intake. It's more the bad food choices I make after a couple of glasses of wine that don't help!

With me it was all linked - I drank wine so slept badly, felt crap the next day so ate more sugary/stodgy food, didn’t have the energy to exercise etc. I found it easier to cut out wine completely rather than cut-down, sort of felt if it was a total ban then I didn’t have the should-I-shouldn’t-I battle in my head over whether to crack open a bottle.

How much do you currently drink?

I've had phases of giving up booze and it's never made a noticeable difference to my weight tbh. In fact one of the times I was slimmest as an adult was in my mid to late 20s when I was drinking shedloads!

I don't drink much any more, but because it makes me feel crappy, not because it makes me fat! Only food seems to affect my weight.

Not at all!
I find the opposite, one small, 125 ml, glass of wine in the evening stops me nibbling.

Yes, I find this. If I have a cup of tea instead I reach for chocolate and cake!

I know that if I didn't drink, I would never need to be on a 'diet' ever again. If I could drink and enjoy a gin n tonic or a vodka lime n Soda, or even a beer, I know I'd have it under control because with those type of drinks, I can stop at 2 or 3. But I don't enjoy them.
Wine is a different kettle of fish for me. I have cut down drastically but still have about 2 bottles a week. Like a pp said though, the day after, I eat nothing but rubbish.
I'm trying to do 7 days with no wine actually to see if I can lose a few pounds. I'm on day 2 and feel OK. I'm certain I can get through the weekend.
Sorry if I went off on a tangent there !

PandoraP · 09/02/2022 21:35

It’s not the wine, but what I eat when you drink it and the day after like others have said too. I always give up alcohol if I want to lose weight.

I was just looking for a thread like this!
I'm really struggling to lose weight but I just can't seem to stop drinking wine! I have a really good day and think 'treat yourself!' And then if I have a bad day I think oh go on you deserve it!

BigBessie · 10/06/2022 09:28

I've given up wine and lost 7lbs in a fortnight. I have been able to go the gym more because I have more energy and not been minded to sit in front of the telly with wine and cheese.
I am hoping to stay off the wine now. If I can do it over a 4 day bank holiday I can do it in general, I reckon.
I may have a gin and diet tonic if I go to a pub in future but am consciously staying away until I am more confident to say no to wine
