Huel is expensive but if you are going to try it

I have a £10 code for newbies.

I have only been using it since New Year but it is helping me count calories and have all my nutrients alongside using MFP.

I think it is very pricey and they should allow more mixing and matching. I will only be getting more whenever I have a discount (I got a second lot by using a special offer with a new email address).

That being said, if anyone wants to chat about my experiences so far I am happy to do so, all the other Huel threads are fairly old.

I know its been a while since you posted - but how have you found it on huel?

ChoccyJules · 08/02/2022 09:49

Hi,
It took me a while to get used to the aftertaste I find the products can have but I have now worked out what I like and what I don’t. I got a few more things on the FB buy/swap page.
I find it good for nutrition, so if I use it for breakfast and lunch I know I am getting a good spread of nutrients, whereas before all my lunches were some kind of sandwich.
However because I am using MFP to count calories, if I have a Huel breakfast and lunch that’s 800cals gone. So it doesn’t leave me much for dinner. I have started playing around with quantities to counter this but that means a bit more measuring and maths.
I have just hit the loss of half a stone, which is really positive and is spurring me on to continue the diet.
It’s a gimmick but at the moment for me it’s a helpful gimmick!

Ha just realised I started this thread on a second identity.

Great news! Well done on the loss, sounds like it's going really well! I went ahead and ordered some that was delivered yesterday (unbelievably quick turnaround) and based on yesterday I think I'm going to go for 600 cals from Huel a day. Like you say, I felt that 800 didn't leave me enough for a great dinner but I should prob move towards that over time. The fact that I want an 800 calorie dinner is probably part of the problem Grin

ChoccyJules · 08/02/2022 14:29

Yes the delivery is super speedy! Good luck with it all.

It’s just harder when trying to eat with the family to have a lower calorie count (plus maybe add an evening tipple Wink) so I need the numbers to be weighted then.

Doidontimmm · 08/02/2022 14:52

Not what was asked but I use the protein works .com which is lovely along with carb killa Grenade bars. I’ve lost 16lbs in a few months :)

TibetanTerrah · 08/02/2022 23:02

I have the shakes, a few flavours that I mix and match one scoop of each, but I kind of missed chewing... absolutely love the hot and savoury though, I have six flavours!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 08/02/2022 23:06

I looked at Huel but the cost and flavour choices put me off a bit. Would you say it's worth the money?

I'm doing the New You plan, not rigidly so am still having a few bits of real food but 18lb lost in 5 weeks so it's working. They do a Total Meal Replacement version and a version called Switch where you eat some of the products and some of your own healthy low cal meals so a bit less restrictive.

JackyinaTracky · 08/02/2022 23:10

I was so glad when DH gave up on this stuff… he did shift a fair bit of weight on it but my god the Huel farts were deadly!

Uncurtailed · 08/02/2022 23:15

Huel is a good product - but extremely expensive. They are a number of like products which are around half price, so suggest you do you research.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/02/2022 23:16

It sounds joyless

Laufeythejust · 08/02/2022 23:22

I love the concept of huel but I just couldn’t get on with the taste. It was just so bad! I know they keep changing the recipe- has it got any better?

ChoccyJules · 09/02/2022 20:23

I like the nutrition content and the fact that the Black is less carbs, more protein. I don’t know if there is an equivalent for half the price as I saw Huel on an offer at New Year and went for it.
Yes the farts are impressive but they wear off!
@TibetanTerrah which H&S flavours have you tried? I hate the chick mushroom one but am getting quite addicted to Mac Cheez. Would like to try the Thai one.

gingerbreadtea · 09/02/2022 20:35

Well I'm on day 2 and honestly the shakes are SO filling. I think it's because I'm not used to this amount of protein (I went for the black protein option) so it's filling me up in a way carbs never did (and I love carbs!)
It's also a MILLION times better if you make it and stick it in the fridge for a couple of hours. I'm sure I won't be saying this later in the week, but today honestly could have gone without dinner.
I'd would really like to try the savoury but I think they do just tip into too expensive/extravagant for me to justify when making dinner for everyone else already.
Anyway, so far so good!

TibetanTerrah · 10/02/2022 02:44

@ChoccyJules Mac n Cheeze and Thai Green Curry are my favourites, closely followed by Madras, Mexican Chilli and Tomato & Herb. I also got the sweet and sour but don't really rate that one. I got quite a few bags just before the price went up and just before the two new pasta ones Chick n Mushroom etc so haven't tried those.

I have coffee, banana chocolate and vanilla in various black and white shake versions, but only have them a couple of times a week if I've worked out hard. Choc and coffee is lovely, as is banana and vanilla!

I have a hot and savoury for lunch every day. Genuinely love them, because they taste good - like a real curry without the chicken etc - and also because I would make some really poor choices when having to think about what to eat!

ChoccyJules · 10/02/2022 09:22

I make my shakes with almond milk, as with water I just didn’t like the aftertaste. It doesn’t add too many calories. I have never been an ‘alternative milk’ person but researched the options and this seemed the best for me (I can’t have soy).

I am now having a H&S for lunch three or four times a week, to stop me just making a sandwich. On the other one or two days I do have a sandwich because I like them. But five a week wasn’t healthy.

The only things I am not sure I needed to buy were the bars, as they are 200cals and for example I can have an apple and a biscuit for the same amount. But occasionally I grab one as I know they are balanced rather than all sugar like a cookie would be!
