Following on from January Thread 1

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022 🍾 🎊 🎉 🍾

Fresh new year, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fasting and eat twice a day.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

I just started to read Paul McKennas I can make you thin. Had no idea who he was (I'm not British so not sure if he's well known amywya) but the book was £0.99 on Kindle and it was recommended in the new year new you. This is first time reading a book on weightloss so will be interesting. Inspired by this I might give weighlss meditation a try. Spotify has some 10min sessions.

TheRealHousewife · 23/01/2022 07:46

Good Morning All

@Rewis has the McKenna book helped? I’ve heard of him. He does a lot of those self help type books/audio. Share what you think.

@Raspberry12 awesome step counts 👍👏🏅Cheese making course… I’m betting it’s interesting 🤔 That’s interesting what you said about hairloss and ferritin/meat. I thought mine was due to low calorie/low carb. I’ll look back over my bloods to see if they checked ferritin. I also have extra walnuts (also bought on offer) and will be trying your dip 👍😋

@fallfallfall thank you for sharing the JO link. I’ll have a peruse later.

@marmilade92 it’s so difficult when looking after lo. They take up the majority of your time. Don’t give up. I’m not meaning don’t give up Slimfast; I’m meaning don’t give up giving yourself a healthy nutritious diet. If you give up now you might start to gain and then you’ll feel more down. What foods do you like? What does a typical days eating look like for you? Are you getting too ravenous (because you’ve been busy with baby) then emptying the fridge/larder? And remember weight loss isn’t linear and it will fluctuate … but if you’ve got a down wards trend going you’re winning. Also I don’t think of what I do as a diet, it’s a way of life. I eat tasty enjoyable food (nothing banned) and I know I can sustain this way of eating for the long term. Granted my weigh loss has slowed but Im definitely maintaining (would love to lose another half stone)Don’t give up Marmilade or at least remain mindful 😊.

@pixiedust21 sounds tough but how delightful you have a 12 week old baby. So precious. You’re doing great and you’ve taken the first steps to change your health/life for the better. Slow and steady will get you there 👍

@2022success Sorry to read you’ve had a tough situation but we’ll done on returning. That’s a really positive first step. You’ve made progress before, you can do it again. You’ve got this 👍👏 Good luck for the interview 🤞 Let us know how you get on.

Sorry have to dash … off out for the day but was hoping to fully catch up before I had to leave. I’ll try again later.

Have a good Sunday 👍

Morning all, I watched Michael Mosley’s ‘lose a stone in 21 days’ programme last night where they do 800 cals every day to force their bodies into ketosis and I thought, well I’m hovering around 1000-1100 cals so not a huge difference, why am I not fat burning? I’m still eating some carbs, but way less than usual. I’ve been stuck on 10st 2 for 5 days so I’m getting frustrated now that’s I’m not losing quicker. I’ve cut out all crisps, chocolate, biscuits etc. Just 2 or 3 meals a day, 1-2 coffees max. I wonder if I need to stop having fruit?

Crazzzycat · 23/01/2022 10:13

@SingaporeSlinky, I don’t know if you have a lot of weight to lose, but my personal experience is that it’s completely normal for weight loss to stall for a few days (usually followed by a big loss!). I would wait a bit longer to see what happens.

I totally get the appeal of losing a stone in three weeks, but if it’s a way of eating that’s difficult to maintain long term, then what happens next?

I’d be interested too in what you make of that book @Rewis. I subscribe to the Headspace app and there’s a mindful eating meditation course on that. I’m tempted to try it, once I’ve worked my way through the current one I’m doing, but not sure how much it would help 🤔

SingaporeSlinky · 23/01/2022 11:15

Crazzzycat I’m only 5’4” with a starting weight of 10st7. So I’ve lost 5lbs, but with the low amount of calories I guess I expected to have lost another 1 or 2lbs this week. I’m not purposely coming in under the 1200 cals but by completely cutting out unhealthy snacks it’s just happened.

I’m weighing myself every day so I can’t see that I’ll suddenly drop more than a pound overnight, I’ve been very consistent, not fluctuating at all since I started.

Ste23321 · 23/01/2022 11:30

Just want to thank you all for the support. I’m actually on day 6 of diet today. I’ve never lasted this long! Tomorrow I am doing my first weigh in. Wish me luck x

campingqueen121 · 23/01/2022 11:30

Hi all.

Exercise didn't happen for me yesterday so I will certainly try and prioritise today, but it's my period and always struggle the first few days. I ate well yesterday but my mum produced an exceptionally large hot chocolate with all the trimmings which I couldn't refuse, dread to think of the calories. I have had salmon and eggs for breakfast and having a roast later, so will just have some fruit and rice cakes for lunch.

@marmilade92 would it help if everything was preprepared, literally chop fruit and have in a bowl so you don't even have to go to hassle of peeling, can just pick at as and when, have a nutrious salad in the fridge ready to eat when you get time, could you prioritise meal and snack prep when your husband is able to look after the baby, either the night before or first thing? I would often go to the fridge grab a slice of ham, or two, cut off chunks of cheese, eat biscuits and bars of chocolate because they were easy, preparing certainly helps me.

@Rewis I have read Paul mckenna think yourself thin, I also read Allen Carr's easy weigh to lose weight (not chatty man) I lost weight with both. I changed the way I ate for 7 years with Allen Carr's book. Stopped smoking 18 years ago with one of his books too. I think it depends on the person whether they work, I know lots of people who stopped smoking permanently with Allen Carr but also a few who didn't. Good luck with it.

Keep up the good efforts all.

swampytiggaa · 23/01/2022 11:30

Hi everyone! I’m in and out at the moment because work is a bit loopy 😊

Weight is a bit up and down mainly because I am doing random shifts and eating a bit too much when not at work and not drinking enough when I am at work! Also (tmi) I haven’t been eating enough veg so I’m not pooing as normal which isn’t helping. Got a really busy week coming up then things should settle a bit.

Did a lovely 10k run with friends this morning 😊 feel better for being out.

Keep it going everyone!

8stone13 · 23/01/2022 11:48

Morning all 🙂

Day 22 - Sun 23rd Jan - 9s 2lb
BMI 21.2
BF 23.5

I ate too much yesterday & was surprised to see no shift on the scales. Frankly I didn't deserve that result 😀 Interestingly I ate more like I used to - mouthful of chocolate here & there, bite of someone else's food that I fancied but didn't need & so on - & it made me uncomfortable. I've definitely switched my eating habits & when I fall back into bad ones I'm not happy with myself 🤨 Which is a positive development, I think 🤔😀

galacticpixels · 23/01/2022 16:54

Happy Sunday 😊 I've decided I'm going to be more strict with counting my calories for the next week as I have gotten a bit lazy although I've still been eating well.

I went for a hike yesterday morning and then we had our first takeaway of the year in the evening (sushi). I'm trying really hard to learn how to have occasional treats without letting them derail me for months after. Dinner this evening is roast chicken, stuffing, mash, and veg.

Hope everyone has a great week ahead!

ginsparkles · 23/01/2022 18:01

Hi all, I have been awol this weekend, and haven't stuck to my plan. I just got so burnt out from work that I needed to give myself some time.

But need to get myself back on track, so plans back in place. Shopping for the week ordered and I'm ready to go again.

Hope everyone has had a better weekend than me!!

Rewis · 23/01/2022 18:09

has the McKenna book helped? I’ve heard of him. He does a lot of those self help type books/audio. Share what you think.
I've finished about 60% and I have to say that I like it as long as I ignore the culty aspects. I'm not a serial dieter so it has a lot of stuff that don't apply. There is nothing that we don't already know but it's an easy read and I can see it working. His philosophy is basically 1) eat when you are hungry 2) eat what you want 3)enjoy the food 4)stop eating when full. So basically eat when you feel hungry (but learn to differentiate between real hunger and other types). Eat without distractions so don't just shove food in your mouth, chew all the way through. Just buy food you enjoy cause then you'll be happier. And you're not gonna run out of food so just stop eating when full. And since you chew your food slower you'll feel the fullness. I have to say that I'm the master of "I'm full, but it's so good so I'll have 1 more". So I do think he has a point but I'm sure it's not for everyone

Raspberry12 · 23/01/2022 19:14

13k step count today
Breakfast: buckwheat pancakes, cream, flaxseeds and berries
Lunch: kale, roast veg, tuna and chilli flakes on a sour dough toast
Dinner: roast chicken and brown rice
Snacks: 2 black coffees, 1 hot chocolate

@TheRealHousewife do get your ferritin levels checked. The normal range is big from 10 - 120 ng/mL but the specialist I was referred to by my GP said that over 70 is required for healthy hair. I get it checked once a year but just remembered it’s been almost three since my last test (baby + pandemic!) so I will get it tested too :)

I need to drink more water this week 💦

buzzofthebumblebee · 23/01/2022 21:40

A quick catch up / check-in. I've had a fairy social weekend, food out twice !!, but I ordered vegetarian curry & left the carbs, and this eve had fish and vegetables, spoon of rice, so hope to have part mitigated damage. Plus I managed a long run today.

I've read everyone's posts but no time to name check - sorry. Here's to a good week for all of us.

declutteringmymind · 23/01/2022 21:45

Hi all!

0.5 lb down this'd week which I don't deserve. Fell off the wagon but back on it today. 4.5lb off which I'm a little frustrated with but in the right direction.

Well done everyone else for sticking at it.

Ste23321 · 24/01/2022 07:43

Hi everyone my first ever weigh in! I’m down 4lb in my week one. I weigh 10.10 now! I haven’t ever stuck to a diet for this long before. I know week 1 and 2 will just be loss of water and no fat yet but I’m still so pleased with myself.

TheRealHousewife · 24/01/2022 08:09

Good Morning All

The weekend went so quickly! At this rate it will nearly be February 😬

@SingaporeSlinky I absolutely understand and share your frustration. My cals are similar to yours and I’m more or less maintaining. Previously I did the Fast800 5:2 and lost the most I’d ever lost in a 12 week period. However I couldn’t sleep properly on it and soon after I started losing hair. Hence I upped my cals. Hair loss slowed but so has weight loss 🤷‍♀️ The biggest hurdle I have is not being able to exercise properly. I do what I can but it’s clearly not enough to rev up my metabolism. I do know it does make a difference where cals come from. So more protein, moderate fat and lower carb which I think you’re doing. I really don’t have any answers but pacify myself with if I didn’t eat the way I do I would be many stones over weight and continuously growing, which would also be incredibly unhealthy. Hang in there and do what you can (healthily)

Well done @declutteringmymind 👍

@buzzofthebumblebee seems you made sensible choices 👏. That’s not always easy when eating out so well done.

@Raspberry12 I had bloods taken last year about hair loss and thyroid function. I remember them remarking my VitD was off the scale in a good way but can’t remember about ferritin so will look up. 👍

@Rewis I agree we all endeavour to eat by those principles but to have it reiterated can be motivating to keep on track. I think we all do the ‘I’m full but will finish as it’s delish’ moments. That’s why I try to weigh out portions if I have the time 😬 Thanks for sharing!

@ginsparkles hope you’re feeling better and just have a reset. It’s great you’ve not given up. A couple of days off track doesnt derail the train 👍 Psychologically it will have given you a boost and increase your motivation (hopefully 😬)

@galacticpixels Not a bad idea! Im a calorie counter/portion weigher. I’m fastidious for a time then I get lax and ‘eye ball’ portions. When I go back to weighing I’m always shocked how much my portions have grown 🥴.

@Ste23321 that’s great. It’s useful to not think of it as a diet, more a way of eating that you’ll be able to sustain long term. You’re doing great!

Menu
Meal 1 - Chicken Soup
Meal 2 - Fish, red peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots, red onion and courgette tray bake.
Tea, black coffee, apple, walnuts.

Happy Monday all 🙂

I don't know where January is going either @TheRealHousewife 🤨

Day 23 - Mon 24th Jan - 9s 2 & 1/2lb
BMI 21.2
BF 23.4

I treated myself yesterday & cooked us all a fry up - bacon, hash browns, baked beans...I didn't have much but I know the 1/2lb overnight add is water from all the salt!

The last few days I've allowed myself to eat a bit more, especially things I love like chocolate, & whilst I'm maintaining my numbers I don't actually feel that good on it. I felt better was I was dieting, which I think tells me something about how the healthier I eat, the better I physically feel. That's an obvious thing to say really, but an unusual thing for a cake addict & chocoholic to really experience it & even more to admit it 😀

I've decided too I might start cooking the things I love that my kids don't more, otherwise I never seem to get them. King prawn & spinach curry for instance. That's a favourite of mine & only really used to threaten my children that if they don't behave then that's what they're having for dinner tomorrow 😉 😀

ImALittlePea · 24/01/2022 09:14

Morning all! I'm really struggling with motivation today. 1yo hasn't slept well since last Weds, and has passed her cold onto me so I'm not feeling the best. Weekend wasn't amazing in terms of eating mindfully, definitely not helped by the above. I'm away this weekend for two nights, anxiety about that is building in terms of being away from the kids, plus it's going to be full of treats, so I want to be really on it this week to mitigate as much as possible, but I'm just feeling so tired and sluggish and meh. Plan for today is soup for lunch (probably a whole tin rather than half, to try and stave off the hunger) and spag bol tonight with some salad or veg. Just hope I can stay away from the naugties in between. Hoping if I do then my motivation might kick back in?!

Ste23321 · 24/01/2022 09:17

I’m not sure if someone already posted about gousto. I’ve started their meal boxes. I get 4 meals a week and helped do much with not thinking about dinner. Here’s a code if you want to try it:

cook.gousto.co.uk/raf/?promo_code=VARIN42952665&utm_source=weblink

Zalen · 24/01/2022 10:21

Hi,

Can I join the group here?

I have a load of lockdown weight to lose, I've lost weight here and there over the last 20 years, but it always goes back on. I'm now at 17st 1 which is down from almost 19st at the height of lockdown last year, so I'm making progress, but have been stalled for a while.

My eldest son and daughter-in-law have been using Gousto for years, so I got a code from them, they get a credit towards their next box and I got 60% off my first box and 30% off the next 3 boxes. I will finish off my third box tonight. It's great for keeping portion sizes under control, and also for adding a variety of vegetables to my diet.

This weekend I stocked up on slimfast and low calorie snacks. I know it's not the healthiest way to eat, but at this point I need something drastic to get me back on the right track. I had my first slimfast shake for breakfast today, reactivated my MyFitness Pal account and went looking for a mumsnet thread for some motivation and so I don't have to feel alone in this.

Youdoyoutoday · 24/01/2022 10:24

I seem to have lost my mojo at the moment! I didn't bootcamp this morning due to being so tired as DD had me up through the night.

I weighed myself this morning, 14 stone 1lbs!!
The absolute horror, that's 5lbs on since Xmas!!

That's my motivation to sort myself out as I can't carry on like this, I've spent a fortune on bootcamp and swimming and made so much effort with food etc that I really need to give myself a good talking to.

However, I have sneaky suspicion that I'm self sabotaging..... if I don't try, I can't fail right? 🤦‍♀️

I'm going to talk to my partner at lunch time and he's truly my rock so I will tell him I'm struggling and he will help by booting me out of bed in the mornings and help keep my food in check! He wants to get back in to calorie counting as he has gained 6.5lbs since Xmas and he's not happy with that so we can help each other!

@SingaporeSlinky it's really frustrating when you don't lose but maintaining a weight loss is really a win, trust me you'd feel more crappy if you gained it back!! Keep going! X

Crazzzycat · 24/01/2022 10:39

Welcome to the thread @Zalen. It sounds like you’ve made some good progress already! Whenever someone mentions weightloss plateaus, I like to share the following article, as it gives a different perspective on what’s going on and explains that plateaus are actually a really good thing (even if it feels frustrating!)

www.secondnature.io/guides/mind/motivation/weight-loss-plateaus-explained

@Youdoyoutoday, I’m with you on being totally unmotivated at the moment. I thought December would be the tricky month, but January is so much worse. I just can’t get back into things at all. Today is attempt number 24 this year…

The only thing I haven’t failed at is exercise. Here’s last week’s progress report on 2022 km in 2022.

Walking: 22.87 km (total 70.33)
Cycling: 13 km (total 65)
Rowing: 18.61 (total 61.92)
X-trainer: 5.65 (total 16.05)

Total km this week: 59.62
Total km so far this year: 212.80

I’m glad I started this exercise challenge, as without it I think I would have considered January a total write off 😬

Zalen · 24/01/2022 10:58

@Crazzzycat thank you, and thanks for that link. I've just had a read through and it makes some interesting points.

SingaporeSlinky · 24/01/2022 11:15

Thanks Youdoyoutoday I definitely won’t give up. I’m probably eating more healthily than I ever have, so if nothing else, I know I’m doing something good for my health.
I’ll see how I go this week, I’ll drink more water, and try and do at least one cardio this week.
