A friend of mine has recently lost alot of weight by eating chicken & veggies for most evening meals- is there a vegetarian equivalent for this? I am totally clueless about food & my staples are pasta, jars of sauce, cheese, bread etc etc. Thanks!

Quorn fillet and veg?

Tofu, mock meat, egg.

Or add nuts eg. cashews to a veg stirfry to make them more filling and nutritious. Or a cheese eg. haloumi.

Quorn fillets or tofu ?Tofoo organic is really nice tofu if cooked in a pan! Larger Sainsbury’s stores have really good vegetarian/ meat alternative options Smile

Omelets and veg are really easy.

You can get halloumi cheese pre-sliced into round burger shapes. Frying a couple in a pan without much oil, plus veg, is a bit like chicken and veg.

Chicken and broccoli = lean protein and veg
Pasta, bread = carbs
Cheese = fatty protein
Jarred sauce = veg made carby with sugar, also possibly oil added.

So to emulate your friend’s diet, you need lean protein - tofu, quorn, eggs, lentils, chickpeas, beans.(the pulses can be carby, but they are ok in moderation as it’s complex carbs), and non-starchy veg (avoid “sweet” veg like sweetcorn and sweet potato).
I’d avoid processed foods like jars of sauce too.

Nice advice above but this sounds like disordered eating... can't you just eat simple food, smaller portions? Doesn't have to religiously be the same meal night after night. That's not sustainable or satisfying.

I'm a big fan of eggs generally. Try huevos rancheros (i tried different recipes including a YouTube one, I make a big frying pan of tomato sauce with onion, chilli flakes and black beans which all takes about half an hour, then break eggs into little dips made in the sauce and cook it all under the grill. Add feta and avocado or peas for more oomph).

I often replace carbs with a bed of fresh spinach leaves and have something like feta cheese, cherry toms and a few pine nuts with salad dressing.

Broccoli and broccoli!

There are lots of amazing veggie food for weight loss and that are nutritious, broccoli and leafy green veg are great, cauliflower, carrots are good too and sweet potatoes are a really nutritious carbohydrates.

Protein sources can include chickpeas, lentils, eggs, tofu, Edam beans, meat replacements.

Is it worth you looking more in nutrition to expand your very carb heavy diet? I would try googling high protein veggie recipes or even invest in seeing a professional to help you put together a good meal plan.

You just need to replace the chicken with a vegetarian source of protein - eggs, pulses etc. Presumably as a vegetarian you know that you need to be eating vegetarian protein sources though. There's no need to eat the same veggie version of your friend's dinner all the time though - there are gazillions of healthy vegetarian recipes. Living on cheese, processed sauces, pasta and bread is definitely not a healthy vegetarian diet!

Ibizas hits the nail on the head with the advice above . You need lean carbs with veg, so that's most fake meats & eggs, or fish if you eat that. Your diet sounds very carb heavy & that's where your problem lies.

Try switching up to wholemeal pasta if you can't give it up, it's more filling & isn't empty carbs like white pasta, you have protein & fibre etc too

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/10/2021 10:45

You mean lean protein with veg, surely?
