Am I "too thin"?

Prepared to be flamed and haven't name changed! I put on and then lost in lockdown. I went from a 42 inch hip to 36... so my measurements were 38-30-42 to 35-26-36.

But I feel... bony. I'm 5ft7 and I'm not feeling this 'skinny? Maybe I was just always a little chubby Grin but I do feel thin. I have hip bones and bum bones, I feel uncomfortable in the bath sitting on my arse... that isn't normal, right?

No you are not. Same height, used to have similar measurements (2inch extra hips, but inch or so less weist)
You will get used to the lack if seat cushions🙈

Sparklfairy · 09/09/2021 15:15

@Annoyedanddissapointed ugh its awful. I miss my bum cushion Grin

I'm 5'7 with a 27 waist and last time I checked I was 52.6 kilos. But I can't gain weight so it must be right for me. But I agree with you about being bony. I can see my ribs on my back :(

Sparklfairy · 09/09/2021 21:03

@NigellaSeed I still haven't got used to it and I don't feel particularly "skinny" in clothes either. But I lie in bed and feel my ribs and bum bones and my hips and its doesn't feel nice Sad

No flaming here.
What’s your weight? I’ve ticked downwards with healthy eating and exercise but I’ve recently noticed I look a bit gaunt. My measurements are similar to yours. I’m being a bit more relaxed with what I’m eating and hoping it shows.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/09/2021 21:14

You're suppose to be able to feel your ribs. Work out your BMI to check it's healthy, you sound OK though, you must be a size 10 in most places? And do some weight bearing exercise so you've got muscles and are not thin-fat.

Sparklfairy · 09/09/2021 21:56

I work out on a rebounder for 45-60 mins every day only 300-450 cals. No idea of my weight as I don't have scales. My size 12 high waist jeans are loose but so are my size 8 tops (always been a smaller size on top).

I think maybe the view of what is "normal" has been warped, but I do miss my "squish" Grin

TowelStripes · 09/09/2021 22:01

I was 15st at my heaviest and now 11st so not "skinny" at 5ft 5) and even I can feel my boney bum, it's really uncomfortable after you've been used to an in built cushion!

Nomoreusernames1244 · 09/09/2021 22:10

What do you weigh?

Tbh it’s impossible to judge on here. Some people are fine with a low normal bmi, some are very thin. I am in eating disorder territory if I drop to the lowest weight for my height, even if my bmi is “normal”. Bone density, muscle mass, build, everyone is different.

I don't think it’s normal to be so bony it’s uncomfortable to sit down though.

Comedycook · 09/09/2021 22:13

You're suppose to be able to feel your ribs

Well that's a silly comment...because if you were dangerously underweight you'd still be able to feel your ribs so it's not a good gauge of whether you're a healthy weight

Robin233 · 09/09/2021 23:12

I've always been skinny, so this sounds normal to me.

CarrotSticks23 · 09/09/2021 23:18

What is your weight?

If you are uncomfortable sitting down then it's fine to gain weight. If you are unhappy with how you look and feel you are too slim then it's fine to gain weight. Go by how you feel not by what other people think

Sparklfairy · 09/09/2021 23:19

@Nomoreusernames1244 I guess you're right, its impossible to tell. When I went down to 9st years ago after a virus I looked genuinely awful. No idea of my measurements though. Guess I'll have to go to boots or my DMs to weigh myself Grin

But sitting in the bath or kitchen chairs is uncomfortable. My rib cage is 28 so I'm storing fat on my norks apparently Grin my face seems ok, I feel slimmer applying makeup etc but don't feel gaunt yet!

I’m 5’6” and my measurements are similar to yours. I’m about 8 and a half stone and don’t feel too thin - when I was half a stone lighter I felt bony and, weirdly, sex felt less comfy. I think bodies tell you when they’re not quite right.

eurochick · 10/09/2021 08:41

I'm 5'6 and was 35-25-35 in my younger days. Apparently the same as Claudia schiffer although she had a good few inches in height on me! I was slim but still had curves. 20 years on in my 40s I expect I would look a bit gaunt with those measurements. So it depends on frame and how you carry it I think and that's different for everyone and changes with life stages too.

Seesawmummadaw · 10/09/2021 08:44

Too thin for what?

ErrolTheDragon · 10/09/2021 08:47

And do some weight bearing exercise so you've got muscles and are not thin-fat.

Squats etc for some nice glutes to sit on maybe?

DogFoodPie · 10/09/2021 08:53

It sounds like a good idea to weigh yourself and possibly think about gaining a few lbs, another thing you could do is look at comparison pictures of people at different fat percentages and see what you think is most like you. You can find these picture charts online.

ShingleBeach · 10/09/2021 09:05

Do some muscle building / weights exercise. Especially those called butt, booty or glute workouts.

THisbackwithavengeance · 10/09/2021 10:33

I'd say your measurements are perfect OP.

Not 90s supermodel/heroin chic skinny but very slim nonetheless and perfectly proportioned.

But you could probably put on a stone at your height and still look great. It's up to you.

But personally speaking, I'd stay where you are. Better to feel bone than rolls of fat looks at self

MatildaIThink · 10/09/2021 10:46

Weight is not a great measure is it ignores muscle, one woman who exercises regularly could be the same height and dress size, but because muscle is much more dense could be 5-10kg heavier than one who was "skinny fat".

If your body fat is no so low that your periods stop and you feel comfortable with your body size then you are not "too thin".

HarebrightCedarmoon · 10/09/2021 10:55

I think it's normal to feel uncomfortable sitting naked on a hard surface. Just put more water in the bath or use a padded mat.

I'm 5'7" and at your starting bust/hip measurements I was in the overweight range for BMI, now I'm more like 38/31/38 and just about normal BMI, and only just in the ok range for waist size diabetes risk, and I'd probably be something like 36/28/36 at BMI 22/23.

When I was in my 20s I was more pear shaped but with a slimmer waist, (something like 34/26/36 when I got married age 28, nine and a half stone and wore a size 8-10) in my 40s it's more of a fight not to turn into an apple in the middle but my bust and hips are more proportioned.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 10/09/2021 11:01

And I no longer do any weights, had done them all my life from age 20 up to my 40s, I do yoga and my strength (particularly upper body) and flexibility is far better than in my 20s. At age 46 I'm doing handstands, headstands and wheel- I'd literally not done wheel since I was ten years old up until a few weeks ago.

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2021 11:05

I feel uncomfortable in the bath sitting on my arse... that isn't normal, right?
No it's not normal.

MatildaIThink · 10/09/2021 11:20

Most of ones arse should be muscle, not fat, it is the muscle that makes sitting on a hard surface comfortable, not fat.
