Am I "too thin"?

Sparklfairy · 09/09/2021 12:19

Prepared to be flamed and haven't name changed! I put on and then lost in lockdown. I went from a 42 inch hip to 36... so my measurements were 38-30-42 to 35-26-36.

But I feel... bony. I'm 5ft7 and I'm not feeling this 'skinny? Maybe I was just always a little chubby Grin but I do feel thin. I have hip bones and bum bones, I feel uncomfortable in the bath sitting on my arse... that isn't normal, right?

It really doesn't have to be muscle. Especially not on women. We can have plenty of body fat and still be healthy.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 10/09/2021 13:55

And some people just naturally have slimmer bottoms. It doesn't mean because the current fashion is for larger rounded bottoms that you should go and work on it in the gym until you get a fashionable bottom. Or worst still, have some kind of implant. No-one needs to "work on their glutes" any more is achieved by getting off them and going for a walk. People are so brainwashed by the beauty and exercise industries.

Ontherebound34 · 10/09/2021 19:34

Um, it’s not normal for it to be uncomfortable to sit on a hard surface because your bones are poking out. Just no.
Also, going by waist to height ratio, you are underweight at 5’7” and a 26 inch waist. Ideal is around 43% but yours is 39%. This and the fact that you feel uncomfortable suggests that you probably would feel better putting on a few pounds. A 26 inch waist may be great for someone of average height but you’re 4 inches taller than the average woman.
I’d get some scales and weigh myself. Are you eating healthily?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 10/09/2021 19:39

Why have you lost so much weight?

HarebrightCedarmoon · 11/09/2021 04:50

According to the calculator my waist measurement is spot on for my height. But the NHS says if I put so much as an inch on I will be higher risk for diabetes. How does that work, then?

Ontherebound34 · 11/09/2021 05:12

Because the NHS seems to use just one measurement for everyone, regardless of their height. So they say that over 32 inches for a woman places you at risk of diabetes. Well, if you’re a 5 ft woman with a 32 inch waist, you’re probably carrying a lot of extra fat around your internal organs. If you’re a 5ft 11 woman, a 32 inch waist probably makes you pretty slim. It would be the same is if the NHS said ‘to be a healthy weight, you need to be below 10 st’ when that could be underweight for a very tall person but obese for a very short one. In short, it’s nonsense and if the waist to height ratio calculator says you are fine, you are fine. Anything above 0.49 puts you at increased risk.

WHR is a better measurement in many ways than BMI because someone can be healthy BMI but still be at high risk because all their fat is around the middle. Equally, someone could be in the overweight BMI but have a slim waist and therefore unlikely to be a diabetes risk.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/09/2021 05:31

I'm the same height as you with similar measurements (slightly bigger boobs) and I don't feel too thin, I love how I look.

Sparklfairy · 11/09/2021 08:02

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Why have you lost so much weight?
Strange question Hmm

I was pushing into overweight category over lockdown if you must know. I've never been that big

Absolutely not necessarily. As i said above, I even had a bit less and I was by no way at all underweight. I did have bigger chest and bum, that's my body shape, but even op's aren't bad. I would assume that op is somewhere about 58-60kg

purplesequins · 11/09/2021 08:14

do you do exercise for your glutes?

Runforthehillocks · 11/09/2021 08:15

If you don't have weighing scales at home, how did you know you were "pushing into overweight category" during lockdown?

Ontherebound34 · 11/09/2021 08:15

Well if you’re happy, great. You’re the one who started a thread asking if you were too thin (without specifying your weight) and then said that you found it uncomfortable sitting down due to your bones sticking out. People are just saying that it’s not normal to feel discomfort due to that which might point to you being better off a few pounds heavier. But I don’t know really because I have no idea of your weight or build. Your waist measurement does suggest you’re on the slim side but again, it’s not an absolute science.

Sparklfairy · 11/09/2021 08:25

I went to stay at my DM's over lockdown for a few months as we both live alone. I weighed myself there and realised I had cleared 11st. Normally I'm 9.5st but prefer slightly lower. I have never been that heavy. I don't have scales at home so tried to go by measurements but people are giving me a hard time here. 26inch waist is definitely not too skinny. I don't think 36inch hip is but it feels like the bum protruding isn't great, when I work out 7 days a week.

OP posts:
Chicchicchicchiclana · 11/09/2021 08:34

I don't think mine was a strange question, you didn't mention why you lost weight and obviously if it was not intentional it would be concerning.

I would say this is a strange thread! You're complaining about bones sticking out and asking strangers if you're too thin but then insisting there's nothing wrong with your weight and measurements. OK then! Waste of everyone's time Odd.

WhenIsItTooLate · 11/09/2021 08:36

It’s pretty subjective surely. I’m very thin by BMI but am small framed despite being very tall and look perfectly fine and healthy - definitely small but not unhealthy or anything like that. Whereas someone else would probably look/feel too thin at this weight. It depends on lots of factors.

Ontherebound34 · 11/09/2021 08:37

26inch waist is definitely not too skinny.

So you started a thread titled ‘am I too thin?’ because?

Sparklfairy · 11/09/2021 08:42

@Ontherebound34 because of my weightloss on my hips especially and I've never felt it before?

As PP said I'm probably roughly 60kg. Its in no way "skinny". Its a normal weight, but I feel bony and don't know why. I'm asking the question on an open forum.

Comedycook · 11/09/2021 08:54

I'm not sure it's a good idea to ask randoms on the internet who can't see you whether you're too thin or not. As usual we have the competitive thinness brigade keen to tell you that you're fine and they can see and feel their bones too and it's all dandy. Maybe it is,maybe it isn't. Why are you working out seven days a week when you already feel too bony?

Ontherebound34 · 11/09/2021 09:06

Well, the answer is I don’t know if you’re too thin. You say you’re 60 kilos so no, that’s not underweight yet obviously it does seem to be bothering you enough to ask the question. But you say your normal weight is 9.5 stone and that is around 60 kg so surely you are now your normal weight so I don’t understand why you would ask about it if this is the weight you usually are. Your original post suggested that this was something new to you, not that you temporarily gained a stone and a half and are now back to your usual weight.

As for feeling bony and not knowing why, it probably is because your bones are in fact protruding (hence the bit about discomfort in the bath). You need to weigh yourself to find out whether your are your normal weight or are actually quite a bit lighter.

M0rT · 11/09/2021 09:14

Go to a Boots and weigh yourself on one of those machines that take body fat percentage as well as height and weight. That will tell you if your in a healthy range or maybe you should add some full fat yoghurt to your breakfast for a while.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/09/2021 09:19

"Um, it’s not normal for it to be uncomfortable to sit on a hard surface because your bones are poking out. Just no."

I disagree. I'm not thin, have put on quite a lot actually but am still in the healthy range and I find some hard chairs uncomfortable.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 11/09/2021 09:25

There is a reason we put cushioning on chairs....😂

Boombadoom · 11/09/2021 09:32

I knew i was too thin when my armpits were concave so shaving was difficult and lying in the bath hurt.

didyouseeit · 11/09/2021 09:43

I would put on a little more weight. Women are designed to have curves, just not excessive curves. I used to be skinny too, with ribs and and awful bony chest I would hide. I put on a stone and feel much better, and look better. Being skinny makes your face look drawn.

Ontherebound34 · 11/09/2021 09:45

Loads of chairs don’t have cushioning and no that’s not why it exists. You’re not supposed to feel discomfort because your butt bones are sticking out. Seriously, it’s not a good sign.
