Am I "too thin"?

Sparklfairy · 09/09/2021 12:19

Prepared to be flamed and haven't name changed! I put on and then lost in lockdown. I went from a 42 inch hip to 36... so my measurements were 38-30-42 to 35-26-36.

But I feel... bony. I'm 5ft7 and I'm not feeling this 'skinny? Maybe I was just always a little chubby Grin but I do feel thin. I have hip bones and bum bones, I feel uncomfortable in the bath sitting on my arse... that isn't normal, right?

@Gwenhwyfar

"Um, it’s not normal for it to be uncomfortable to sit on a hard surface because your bones are poking out. Just no."

I disagree. I'm not thin, have put on quite a lot actually but am still in the healthy range and I find some hard chairs uncomfortable.

Well yeah hard chairs aren’t always comfy. I’m not saying that. Is the reason you find them uncomfy because your bones are sticking out? The OP was talking about lying in the bath.
Annoyedanddissapointed · 11/09/2021 10:16

No "butt bones" are sticking out on someone with that measurements.

MindBodyChocolate · 11/09/2021 10:16

I’ve recently gone from 19stone to about 13 (5 foot 6) and am still 2 stone above my ‘normal’ bmi. I can now see and feel loads of bones which to start with I found really disconcerting. Then I realised I’d developed a warped sense of normality and it’s completely normal and healthy to see my collarbone, (some!) ribs and hip bone. And yes, sitting on hard chairs is sometimes uncomfortable. We’re all different and if you’re worried get weighed and perhaps check your fat/muscle % too.

Well it was the OP who said it 🤷‍♀️ If she weighs 60 kilos or whatever, she’s fine. Not sure why she started a thread seeing as she has said she doesn’t actually think she’s too thin.
Annoyedanddissapointed · 11/09/2021 12:17

People start threads for million reasons. Just a chat for example about newly found body parts.

I felt the difference when i went from morbidly obese to bog standard obese so i can imagine someone losing can find the body difference notocable to them and eants ton ave a chat

Okay but she said she has always weighed the same as she thinks she does now and her thread was entitled ‘am I too thin’ which is pretty provocative. Seems like it was just one of those threads to encourage people to say how normal it is to be able to count all your ribs or how society has lost sight of what a normal body is Hmm
Gwenhwyfar · 11/09/2021 13:27

"There is a reason we put cushioning on chairs....😂

Loads of chairs don’t have cushioning "

Cafes with hard chairs don't want you to stay too long basically. It's definitely normal for some hard chairs to be uncomfortable. I do wonder if it gets worse with age because I find now that there are some places I cannot sit at all (and I'm not skinny).

Gwenhwyfar · 11/09/2021 13:27

"The OP was talking about lying in the bath."

No, she was talking about SITTING in the bath, which is not what the bath is really made for.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/09/2021 13:29

"but she said she has always weighed the same as she thinks she does now"

No, she didn't say that.

Comedycook · 11/09/2021 13:29

Yes it's very tedious

Gwenhwyfar · 11/09/2021 13:31

@Comedycook

You're suppose to be able to feel your ribs

Well that's a silly comment...because if you were dangerously underweight you'd still be able to feel your ribs so it's not a good gauge of whether you're a healthy weight

That's a total misunderstanding. If someone is dangerously underweight the scales would tell them. Just being able to feel ribs wouldn't tell them anything.
Ontherebound34 · 11/09/2021 13:38

@Gwenhwyfar

"but she said she has always weighed the same as she thinks she does now"

No, she didn't say that.

She said that she normally weighs 9.5 stone but had put on weight. She then said that she thinks she weighs around 60 kilos. That is 9.5 stone which is what she said her normal weight is. Surely the sitting in the bath thing would have been an issue all along then? As for the comment that the bath isn’t made for sitting in, I have nothing to say.

There’s no way to tell without actually seeing the person. people have bigger builds, different proportions, different muscle and fat distribution.

A “normal” weight range is about 3st for any given height. That’s a big difference, and someone who naturally lies at the top of the normal range would be too thin if they lost 3st.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 11/09/2021 15:04

No ones butt bones "are sticking out" ever tbh. But no, not woth these measurements and it is not that hard so say from hight and the inchies (which i need to keep converting to cm).
Only "butt bone" which could be sticking up is a tail bone.
Fun fact, there are people who indeed have it sticking out and few people actually have "tails".

MrsRubyMonday · 11/09/2021 15:18

Over the last 12 months or so I've steadily lost 6.5 stone. I still have a fair bit I want to lose, but I already hate the way my body feels bonier, I can see collarbones, my hipbones are far more noticeable when I'm lying down, I can feel ribs, and I just don't like it because it's not the body I'm used to. I am gradually adjusting, but it's definitely more a mental thing than the fact I'm too skinny as I'm definitely not yet, I'm somewhere between a 14 and 16 in clothes. I'm finding it very hard to reconcile knowing I am much healthier and physically doing better with the image I have in my head of how my body used to feel, I find clothes shopping hard as I still feel like a 'fat' person and I don't know how to dress my new shape yet. Plus I just found out I'm pregnant so it's all going to change again soon, but if I need to I will consider seeing a therapist for a few hours to talk it through once I feel ready.

Sparklfairy · 11/09/2021 17:08

Christ. I'm going to try and do a broad reply not in a rage, but mn is stupid sometimes with weight threads.

I said I was MAYBE 60kg but genuinely have no idea. I could be higher or lower. I'm just going by measurements as I don't know.

I do have butt bones. @Annoyedanddissapointed. So you have your hip, and move your hand round, and then you have a dip and feel your butt bone. Then when you're in the bath its horrible and uncomfortable.

This isn't a thread on the rights and wrongs of being skinnier or curvier. i thought we could just chat. My body has changed and I'm surprised it has all gone from from my hips but not much from my chest and bust. Instead mners try to hand my arse to me Hmm

Sorry. Try to hand my bony arse to me Grin

The reason you feel uncomfortable is because you’re not used to it. I’m not too thin, not by a long way, and I’ve always been able to feel my hips and ribs among other parts of skeleton - that is just part of being a healthy weight. If you really are around 60kg you are in a mid range of a healthy BMI - you could still lose more weight or put some on of you wanted to.

Rosesareyellow · 11/09/2021 17:21

It’s not something I’ve considered before - it’s quite an eye opener that for some previously overweight people their skeleton is some kind of gross or uncomfortable revelation although it’s very understandable. It does say something about our current misconceptions about healthy weight.

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2021 17:27

I’m pretty sure you’re ok but hard you gauge from thread

How old are you? Sometimes it can make you feel differently as you get older and thinner

But then again you might be young so not relevant

Griefmonster · 11/09/2021 17:32

How old are you OP? I am same height and hover around "overweight" to just inside "healthy weight".

I lost weight a while back in my 40s (to around 65kg) and looked terrible. Under no measure an unhealthy weight loss but for me, it sucked all the juice out of me! We lose muscle mass and skin elasticity as we age and so weight loss is quite unforgiving.

Might be that?

JaneJeffer · 11/09/2021 22:50

Don't be ridiculous. Do you just want people to agree with you? Nobody here can see if you're too thin but if it's causing you pain then go to your doctor and see what they say.

Three0fivepointfour · 12/09/2021 11:11

Do you think you could be perimenopsusal? I started to find it difficult to sit down during mine, from my early to mid 40s I suppose. I was (ha) always slim so I knew it wasn’t that I was too slim as I’d never had problems before. I’m on HRT now and I feel much better.

MindBodyChocolate · 12/09/2021 11:24

One other thing, I’m the same weight now as I was when I was 20 but I am definitely bonier around the chest, ribs and hips now. Maybe it’s just another part of the ageing process.

Sparklfairy · 12/09/2021 11:57

Thats the sort of response I was hoping for (and have got).

People like @JaneJeffer are just rude though and forget that people ask genuine questions on an open forum to get ideas they might not have thought of.

Fwiw I don't think I'm perimenopausal, at 33 with no kids I'd hope not Grin but I do think there's something in the general vibe that "aging" means you carry weight differently. I was these measurements at 16/17 and definitely didn't feel as bony.
