Losing weight/inches round waist after 50

I’m 53, 5’10” and have a tendency to being overweight. In the past a few weeks of cutting out wine and snacks and upping the exercise has had a good effect.

In the last year suddenly all extra weight is at my waist, and my usual process of no wine or snacks hasn’t resulted in any weight loss.

Two questions - what is going on - why is it so hard to lose weight?

And, any suggestions on how to lose the spare tyre?

Thanks

I'm your height and age.

I've been doing weight lifting.I've had a lot of focus on core strength with plenty of planks, push ups and pull ups, plus heavy deadlifts and squats. I have not lost weight (am at a healthy weight but am focusing on reducing body fat and gaining muscle) but I have lost size around my torso.

Hormonal fluctuations and water retention can affect scale weight hugely, plus result in bloating. I sometimes get a very bloated stomach. I also find that I have to keep an eagle eye on my calories (in and out) if I want to control my weight. Just cutting out wine and snacks would not work for me as I'd be likely (unwittingly, but I know from past experience) to add extra calories on to my meals, or move less.
