Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 4

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/08/2021 09:08

Hi to all regulars and lurkers!

Here's the 4th thread, based on the ideas in Dr Andrew Jenkinson's book. We've seen some amazing losses on these threads, and the benefits for me can be summed up as 'no counting, no starving'.
We don't count calories, and if we're hungry we eat. We're focused on quality.

General eating principles:

No sugar
No wheat (which reduces unhealthy carbs)
No ultra processed foods, and in particular no processed/ultra refined oils
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

His principles also include trying to sleep more and reduce stress, and take regular (moderate) exercise.

If any of this sounds promising, please feel free to ask questions and come and join in!

Today I found some crisps made with olive oil and some stock made with bones and vegetables. Probably didn’t need to eat as many of the crisps as I did but at least no sunflower oil was involved.

Which crisps were these please? 😂

Tell me about air fryers - are they worth it?

We don’t eat potatoes at home really, so we wouldn’t be using it for chips, but we do fritters of some kind or other most weeks and the faff and spatter of shallow frying is a palaver. Could you make fish or vegetable fritters in an air fryer?

NeverTooOldToTry · 28/09/2021 22:52

Hi all,
I have been lurking in the background since the beginning of 1st thread and thought it was time that I showed myself. I read the book a few weeks back but caught a virus(not covid) so haven't yet put it all in to practise. I have been avoiding bread and sugar and have changed from veg oil so I have made a good start. Going to weigh tomorrow

Aria999 · 29/09/2021 00:52

Hi @NeverTooOldToTry !

Hope the weigh in is good. You're already doing the most important bits by the sound of it!

I think they were cheaper in the shop. The stock came in a frozen tub. Haven’t tried that yet but as I said the crisps went down very well - including with my very fussy DD.

Air fryers stir as they cook so wouldn’t work for fritters. I only cook chops in mine but I think they are good for things like stir fry’s where you have chunks of food to cook together.

Wow - Coconut oil crisps for £1.95: thevegankind.com/p/trafo-coconut-oil-baked-crisps-lightly-salted-40g

Haven’t tried these ones

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 29/09/2021 07:36

It’s actually £1.19 but there is a minimum spend on that website of £25. Will keep a lookout. Probably best not to anyway….

HighlandCowbag · 29/09/2021 07:49

I don't think my air fryer stirs? It wouldn't cook chips if it did, I'd end up with fried mashed potatoes!

I like mine but only use it for chips or edges. But my cousin has used it for onion bhajis and falafels etc so no reason why fritters wouldn't work.

Had to resort to shop bought lunch yesterday again. Rice and smoked salmon thing from Boots. Was probably OK, apart from whatever they used on the rice to make it sticky.

Monday and Tuesday are going to be tricky. I'm up at 6am and out of the house by 7.30am, and then have ds to pick up before I come home to go out again so need something in that 15 minute slot I have waiting for ds. Am going going to dig my lunch bag and ice packs out and start taking a salad for my car picnic. Won't have time to faff in the morning so going to chop the salad up and leave it in 2 seperate tubs in the fridge to grab and go.

Had steak, med veg and a couple of chips for dinner. Weight loss stalled this week, in fact it's gone up lb, but had a dramatic and unexpected loss last week so am OK with that.

Cakey46 · 29/09/2021 09:29

Hi everyone, please can I join? I have read the book via audible and it exactly explains my extra weight after each round of failed diet. So I find myself at 49 and 5'2 weighing 11'8. I would love this to be a WOE forever. I need to resist the urge to go full keto (especially as I'm always impatient for results). I also put DH on this WOE and will have to regularly explain why fat is good (he previously lost lots of weight eating low fat due to gall bladder, it all went back on though didn't it??)
So, last night we had sweet potato seasoned wedges, chicken breast and home made coleslaw which will also be lunch today with smoked mackerel.
Breakfast was jumbo oats with cream and cinnamon. Delicious but I did fight the urge to add honey.
Tonight it's lamb koftas with Greek salad.
😋😋😋😋

thesearelaughterlines · 29/09/2021 10:54

My air fryer doesn't stir , that's why I have to shake the chips
I do salmon / chips/ roasted veg/ jacket spud / chicken / veggie fingers / frozen sausage / bacon / gammon joint/ Quorn nuggets / lamb chop was too messy / and homemade burgers

Not an adventurous cook but you get the picture , I love mine and would replace it if it went capoot - unlike the toastie/ bread/ soup/ ice cream makers

Air fryer and crock pot , use them more than oven

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 29/09/2021 11:23

I have lost 9 pounds since early August when I first started looking into omega 3. Just finally got my stone award at Slimming World after 9 months of faffing around at about a half stone loss. So pleased. (Not telling them what’s changed thoughWink)

NeverTooOldToTry · 29/09/2021 14:09

hi, Today is weigh in Wed, 4lbs down in two weeks, but I had a flu bug so had a few days with not much eating. I'll take that and see what this week brings, Have a good day all

Bearyhumcrack · 01/10/2021 07:05

A stone down in a month for me. Going to try to consolidate that into a set point by the end of October!!

PrincessofPeeves · 01/10/2021 07:12

Had worst sugar craving ever yesterday and struggled to stop myself drowning in chocolate. What I did do (it was DELICIOUS) is mix a little bit of maple syrup with cacao and poured it on mascarpone. Yes it's naughty but unprocessed and stopped my craving really nicely.

How long has it been @styletryle? I've only been doing it this week but, because I've been fasting and generally abusing my metabolism for years, I think it might take a while before my body thinks the famine is over and I start losing.
DH lost 2 lbs this week bstard !!

Aria999 · 01/10/2021 13:42

@Styletryle that's frustrating

Could be still too much sugar?

You could try sharing a day or two of your eating with us and we can see if we can suggest anything.

I know for me it was a massive leap of faith to start eating as much fat as I felt like and if I hadn't lost immediately I would have been skeptical.

Neeko · 01/10/2021 16:11

Some really positive stories this week. I'll add mine -I am within a healthy bmi for the first time in 5 years. Would still like to get down a fair bit but that's 9.5lbs since the beginning of August and I'm delighted.

@Styletryle are you drinking plenty of water? I gave up all diet drinks and diluting juice and aim to drink at least 2 litres a day. I'd agree with what someone said earlier about eating plenty of fat. It goes against what I've done all my life but I'm losing without being hungry or restricting my portions so I'm happy to go with it.

Can I recommend Brussel sprouts quartered, seasoned and pan fried in garlic olive oil? Really tasty.

samthebordercollie · 01/10/2021 16:19

@Styletryle do you have much weight to lose? Im not sure it helps if you just have a few kilos to lose

Aria999 · 01/10/2021 17:08

@samthebordercollie

I dunno, I had 6lbs to lose and I lost them. I could happily continue down a few more but I'm now 5ft 4 and 9 st 6 which is fine.
