Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 4

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/08/2021 09:08

Hi to all regulars and lurkers!

Here's the 4th thread, based on the ideas in Dr Andrew Jenkinson's book. We've seen some amazing losses on these threads, and the benefits for me can be summed up as 'no counting, no starving'.
We don't count calories, and if we're hungry we eat. We're focused on quality.

General eating principles:

No sugar
No wheat (which reduces unhealthy carbs)
No ultra processed foods, and in particular no processed/ultra refined oils
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

His principles also include trying to sleep more and reduce stress, and take regular (moderate) exercise.

If any of this sounds promising, please feel free to ask questions and come and join in!

I actually shallow fry chips in olive oil in a frying pan. It works fine.

StrongArm · 25/09/2021 14:36

I'm still enjoying it and I think I have more energy if that's possible. I am definitely sleeping better.

I'm finding it hard not to eat ice cream especially as my kids love it so much! But am still avoiding bread/pasta for now. I'm just not buying sweets but if you put a packet in front of me, I think I would find it hard to say no!

I am still hungry though :) but I thought I would be :)

notlongtillxmas · 25/09/2021 15:13

@Styletryle I love my air fryer !
I make chips ( par boil 5 mins , pat dry with kitchen roll, spray with fri light and into air fryer 15 mins ) lovely
But the thing I like the most in it is my jacket spud - if you like a thick crunchy skin it's the best spud I've ever had ( 5 -8 mins in microwave depending on size , one spray of fri light and in for maybe 30-45 mins
Heavenly

I also do salmon , chicken , small bit of gammon , roasted veg , frozen sausage , veggie fingers all in it

All great , I'd highly recommend one

Words · 25/09/2021 15:41

I shallow fry in olive oil too, or with sweet potatoes, coat in olive oil and roast, so not sure I would need an air fryer ( and I love gadgets!)

Can you use normal oils in them or is it just the spray kind as don't think those are ideal ( but fine once in a while I guess.)

Words · 25/09/2021 15:42

I do like the sound of that baked potato though- love a crispy skin.

Could you brush in olive oil ? Don't think you'd need much ?
HighlandCowbag · 25/09/2021 18:15

I do airfryer chips with lard/dripping. Don't even bother par boiling, chip the spuds, leave in water for bout 30 mins, drain and rinse. Heat airfryer up for a few mins and put chips in with a wodge of lard, cut into small pieces on top of chips. Cook for a few mins the give them a good shake and return to the fryer.

I have only ever done chips and wedges in mine, keep meaning to do other stuff but always forget.

Good day today, been so busy I've forgotten to eat 😅. Having naice curry from takeaway tonight.

Fri lite is sunflower oil?

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 25/09/2021 21:53

@Mrsmorton

Not the olive oil one. Although there is a long list of ingredients your great grandma wouldn’t have recognised.
thesearelaughterlines · 25/09/2021 21:58

Yes I have a butter one and an olive oil one but unsure if suitable for this woe
So I keep to 1 jacket spud a week and only one meal of chips too

Aria999 · 26/09/2021 03:58

@StrongArm seriously if you're hungry eat eat eat. On plan if you can!

Ice cream isn't too bad actually. The sugar isn't great but the cream is fine!

GetFitOrDieTrying · 27/09/2021 07:14

Morning all.
I've been directed to this thread as I'm just starting out on this journey and I have lots of questions.

Well done to everyone who is finding success with this way of eating. I love the concept and pray that this will be the solution to a self confessed to yo-yo dieter!

I'm a vegetarian so no meat or fish, but I also can't eat eggs (as much as I'd love to).

Are oat cakes ok?
Gluten free pasta?
Rice?
Ryvitas?
Rye bread?

Also can anyone please recommend some brands for butter?

And olive oil... do I go for extra virgin or normal?

Thanks in advance.

Chunkymonkey123 · 27/09/2021 07:24

Hi @GetFitOrDieTrying
Yes to oat cakes if they have no added vegetable oil and yes to rice. Not sure about the others but doesn’t gluten free pasta still have wheat in it?
I go for extra virgin olive oil for the health benefits. Kerry gold is my favourite butter but I don’t think it matters.

JumpingFrogs · 27/09/2021 09:15

@GetFitOrDieTrying
Some oatcakes seem to contain rapeseed oil but I've found that the Clearspring brand are made with olive oil.
If you prefer spreadable butter in a tub, the M&S one does not contain vegetable oil (a lot of them seem to contain oils as well as butter)
Rice is fine in moderation, and rice cakes are good. I spread Saint Agur blue cream cheese (no dodgy oils!) or butter and marmite on those.
Good luck!

JumpingFrogs · 27/09/2021 09:17

Kerrygold and President spreadable butters also seem to be free of rapeseed oil

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 27/09/2021 10:12

Butter is butter - I get the supermarket brand but I suppose if you knew it was grass fed it would be better.

I cook in coconut oil now. Seems to be working for me. Not much of either omega in it mostly medium chain saturated fats.

KittyKatkin · 27/09/2021 10:56

@GetFitOrDieTrying
Kerrygold butter is (mostly) grass fed. We keep our butter on the worktop so it is always spreadable! It never goes rancid-but we do eat a pack every 1-2 weeks!

TheLeadbetterLife · 27/09/2021 12:34

We have a glut of squashes in our garden at the moment, so it’s variations of those for dinners at the moment. I often cook the attached recipe (from the Moro cookbook), adapting it as necessary. Yesterday I made it with grated yellow squash, sage, mint and ilha cheese, which tastes somewhere between cheddar and Parmesan.

It’s an excellent vegetarian dinner staple for us, and if you make extra the leftovers are good cold, or you can freeze them.

Hello all

I just buy whichever butter is cheapest, but don't use spreadable because I don't really spread it. Rest of the family use lurpak.

First day back at uni. Need to be more organised for eating on the go. Ended up grabbing sushi and a bag of crisps earier as didn't have time to get anything else. Tomorrow will be similar so going to see if I can cobble anything together before I go out.

Leftover beef, roast veg and potatoes for tea. And a very early night 🌙 😴.

Chunkymonkey123 · 27/09/2021 21:10

What are people’s thoughts on muesli? The one I bought has no added sugar etc.
I also made Pearl barely risotto tonight which was nice and I assume on plan?! I have read the book but getting very confused 😂
Biggest success is that I went to an Italian restaurant today did lunch and I had a salad rather than pizza or pasta which I love. Too much mindless chocolate though after a couple of glasses of wine last night though. Weigh in tomorrow and I’m hoping the be the same as last week.

TheLeadbetterLife · 27/09/2021 22:16

I eat muesli every day, but I make my own because I could never find a mix that worked well with the diet. I don’t add dried fruit because of the sugar and oil on it, but I usually have some fresh berries and yoghurt.

GetFitOrDieTrying · 27/09/2021 22:58

Thanks for all the advice.

I'm sort of trying to get my head around it all, so it's a gradual change.

Learned how to make homemade oat cakes without all the nasties!

Just 3 ingredients: oats, wholemeal flour and olive oil. Not sure if I can share link?

veryblearyeyed · 28/09/2021 01:57

This is my favourite! I do it in the waffle maker too. I thought the waffle maker would end up in the cupboard of doom (love that phrase, thanks to a pp for it Smile.

veryblearyeyed · 28/09/2021 01:58

Whoops, replies aren’t working on my phone. That should have quoted Princess Peeves’ post about socca.
