Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 4

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/08/2021 09:08

Hi to all regulars and lurkers!

Here's the 4th thread, based on the ideas in Dr Andrew Jenkinson's book. We've seen some amazing losses on these threads, and the benefits for me can be summed up as 'no counting, no starving'.
We don't count calories, and if we're hungry we eat. We're focused on quality.

General eating principles:

No sugar
No wheat (which reduces unhealthy carbs)
No ultra processed foods, and in particular no processed/ultra refined oils
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

His principles also include trying to sleep more and reduce stress, and take regular (moderate) exercise.

If any of this sounds promising, please feel free to ask questions and come and join in!

@Yogabod don't worry about nuts. I think we all agree to disagree with Dr J on that one. I eat more than a kilo every week of almonds and cashews and know that the fibre content is excellent for my gut microbiome so I'm not going to cut them out. No other diet plan I've read excludes nuts, on the contrary they are encouraged!

This article has a bit about'revenge bedtime procrastination' (putting off going to bed in rebellion against... yourself).

I am guilty of this sometimes with both bedtime and food!

Glad nuts are being embraced by all.

That’s an interesting article. I definitely do that with food. But if anything, I sleep too much!

I have a question - are you all doing maintenance breaks? I read that to reduce the set point it helps. I want the weight of NOW, but I also want it off forever.

Help me, dd1 is home for a week as she has exams and it was cheaper to do them here. It’s her birthday today, so much chocolate and cake is in the house, I’ve had zero sugar, cake, biscuits chocolate since March and I’m really struggling. I think if I can survive this I’ll be good for a very long time but if I break it’ll be the slippery slope. Help me resist the urges haven’t been this strong since I quit.

TheLeadbetterLife · 11/01/2022 14:27

you've had zero sugar etc. in all that time?? That's amazing! Bloody hell.

If you allowed yourself to gorge on something like an array of fabulous cheeses, would that be enough of a treat to keep you off the cake?

Yogabod · 11/01/2022 14:29

@Billybagpuss You can resist.

It wont even taste that good, but will leave you stuggling for days if not weeks, or it might set you right back on the sugar train. I gave up sugar twice, slipped, and then clean lost my mind on sugar till I was fatter than ever. Its horrible stuff and easier to say no to when you're not under its spell. Its better in your mind than in reality. Go nibble on some cheese or something to get that 'taste' out of your brain.

Billybagpuss · 11/01/2022 21:18

Thank you both,

Yes I literally went from gorging multiple packs of biscuits and sweets to nothing, I’ve literally had no processed sweet stuff. I had raisins and an orange this afternoon. I haven’t succumbed to the chocolate. I want to get through January with no processed sugar and my weight staying static.

@Yogabod that is my fear I know if I succumb it will be it. And if I do have any it must be planned, like a slice of my dd wedding cake in August I know if I have any now it will be binge central.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 12/01/2022 15:15

Well done for yesterday.

I have lost 5.5lb in the last week. Really pleased. But I know it is really keeping at it that is the challenge. I am already thinking about Easter eggs and hot cross buns and whether I will plan one or just abstain this year. I was talking to DH about it and of course this sort of thing hasn’t crossed his mind in January. It is an uphill battle if you’re brain is orientated around food.

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/01/2022 15:36

Good work @SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun, it's satisfying when you see it working.

I am a food obsessive too, I'm always thinking about my next meal, my next dinner party, what I'll eat at Christmas / Easter / on holiday. My husband does too though, we are a pair of gannets.

Shall I start a new thread maybe? We're running out of room on this one.

samthebordercollie · 12/01/2022 16:55

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun that's some impressive weight loss in one week, well done!

Bagpuss that's great work on avoiding sugar. I drink wine at the weekend, eat 85% chocolate and have honey in Greek yogurt, I'd find it hard to give that up but cakes and biscuits no problem.

TheLeadbetterLife good idea to start a new thread. I tagged ExtraMature recently but not sure she is still around as there was no reply!

I've lost the rest of my little Christmas weight gain (and more) by having a nasty stomach bug. All food tastes horrible and most isn't digested. I wouldn't, however, wish it on anyone!

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 12/01/2022 19:00

Oh dear I have cracked a bit this evening with a bit of leftover burger in a bun, quite a few crisps and a whole burger bun. Need to draw a line, forget it and move on to tomorrow. At least no sugar was involved.

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/01/2022 20:29

On the subject of burgers, I discovered the burger salad on another thread recently. It really hits the spot that only a burger can. We had it again tonight. I found some shop bought ketchup and mustard that didn’t have spooky ingredients, mixed them with homemade mayonnaise to make burger sauce.

Sounds like a nasty bug @samthebordercollie! I hope it doesn’t last much longer.

I hope ExtraMatureCheddar is still around. I’ll put together a new thread post in case…
