Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

Has anybody listened to the Doctor's Kitchen podcast? Loads of episodes about lots of different food/health subjects, really interesting.

Yes, I mentioned it in a previous post, many of the books I read are thanks to the authors being interviewed on the Doctor's Kitchen podcast. I like Dr Rupy's modest style, I find Dr Chatterjee (who also has interesting topics) a little too sycophantic towards his guests.

Good restart yesterday - Greek yoghurt and strawberries, potato rosti, then steak, asparagus, salad and creamy mushroom sauce. Also two glasses of rose.

Hi all, I've bought this book and haven't finished it yet but hope you don't mind me jumping on the thread - curious to find out everyone else's experiences with this! I've tried LCHF in the past and felt great on it but found it hard to maintain (especially as a vegetarian) so hoping this might be easier. Has anyone seen significant weight loss yet? Sorry haven't RTFT...

UndertheCedartree · 05/08/2021 14:13

I've had Greek yogurt with a small sprinkling of granola, milled flackseed and blueberries and nectarine. Like others I like fruit with my breakfast. I'm having eggs a couple of times a week, yogurt a couple of times and then oat breakfast the other days (overnight oats, porridge or baked Oats).

For lunch I wasn't that hungry so had a triangle of Edam, a few olives and pickles and an apple (so over the 2 fruit limit recommended by Dr.J but one step at a time!)

Regarding sleep I used to suffer severe insomnia I now take medication for my mental health that sends me to sleep but I still wake up tired as I think medicated sleep doesn't give you quality sleep. This was backed up by Matthew Walker's book on sleep. But little I can do about it!

Glad to hear slightly better nights have been had.

I've had two salads today: chicken, rocket and olives for lunch with vinaigrette dressing, and this evening a salmon recipe from this month's Ocado mag: poached salmon fillet served on rocket and shaved raw courgette with feta, mint, oregano and a dressing of oil, vinegar and a little honey. ( I know but I am allowing myself that.) Also called for pomegranate seeds but didn't have any of those. Very tasty and quick to do!

I tried making soft cheese in the yog maker. Followed instructions to letter and it didn't set at all. Put it on again but don't think it will work. Shame- and a waste of good milk.

Another discovery to report. I see Michael Mosley is all about the apple cider vinegar so added some on to my Ocado order. I love the stuff. Love it! Could drink neat in quantity. Not sure that is a good or a bad thing t b h...

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/08/2021 18:59

I love apple cider vinegar too. I have no idea if it has all the miraculous properties that are claimed. A lot of poultry keepers swear by it as a cure-all, but I think it's bollocks and I'm not wasting expensive vinegar on the chickens.

We do drink it neat though, as a supplement. A tablespoon of it a day. Is it doing anything? No idea.

I've eaten way too many oatcakes today. I'm in a bit of a funk and turning to food out of sheer boredom and irritation. Maybe it's the weather - a shade too hot and sticky this week. Plus we're behind on a load of boring DIY jobs, which always makes me a bit fractious.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 06/08/2021 00:02

I had two salads too, Words! Greek salad for lunch and chicken Caesar for dinner. (Also Greek yog, strawberries and cream for pudding, and quite a lot of wine as friends dropped in).

Can I join please?

I have read the book and really enjoyed it. The set point really resonated with me as I have pretty much always been 9.13 with some flucstions. I am interested in this primarily for health reasons. I have dabbled in low carb this year which has reduced bloating and appetite, and I love the woe generally but its unforgiving so want something that fits better as a life long plan. If it results in a slightly lower set point (9.7ish would be my dream!) then great, but actually I am a healthy top end of bmi so going to avoid weight and focus in health.

I am on the last day of a holiday today so things are not usual food wise which will be/
Porridge with flaked almonds
Lunch left over roasted veg, chicken, salad maybe apple and cheese
Dinner fish and chips. However I now order a kids portion which is plenty! Tomorrow back onto the better stuff.

@TheLeadbetterLife I don't know I fit helps, but this one big long sleep is fairly recent evolutionarily. In the past people slept in two chunks. I don't know how suitable a nap is in you life, but it might take the pressure off in terms off feeling like you should be asleep and therefore allowing more rest. I will se eif I can find a link.

jewel1968 · 06/08/2021 09:35

I notice a lot of people weighing themselves. Didn't the book recommend not weighing yourself? I think he is trying to get us to change not 'go on a diet' which psychologically will lead us to stopping being on a diet.

I think not weighing yourself is a big part of the approach?

Bestbees · 06/08/2021 09:41

I agree jewel. Was it you asking about coconut milk? I buy the block and add hot water, way less nasties!

jewel1968 · 06/08/2021 15:11

@Bestbees it was me asking about coconut milk. I don't think I saw the block version - will look for it. I saw a sachet version that you could ask water to which had only one additive I think. I did find one version that apparently has no additives. I am getting it online so will see if it truly has no additives when it arrives.

Tiredandbored · 06/08/2021 16:24

Ok, confession time 😳

We have friends staying for a few days, so my meals have NOT been on-plan. On Wed we went out for dinner to a Chinese restaurant and I had a 3-course meal Blush

Relatively small portions for each course (compared to what I used to eat), but definitely not on-plan.

Yesterday evening we ordered in pizza BlushBlush

Again, I only had a smallish helping, but it was still pizza and garlic bread and wedges

Today we took the kids to McDonald's BlushBlushBlush

I just took a wrap, though did also finish a few fries the kids didn't want.

I haven't had any tummy trouble as yet despite all the wheat and junk, though that could still come my way. I'm fully anticipating a likely consequence on my weight, but am willing to accept that as this is not my usual way of eating and I will be back on-plan when my friends leave in a couple of days again.

On the positive side my other meals have all been very much on-plan (porridge for breakfast, salad, fruit, cheese and yoghurt for lunches) and I've had no snacks at all.

It is interesting though - when I've dieted in the past if I had a period of eating like this I would have hit self-destruct and just kept eating crap and given up. This time I've been able to (slightly!) moderate the amount I've eaten and I'm very clear in my mind that this is a temporary few days. I'm looking forward to getting back on-plan again and don't feel like I've screwed up at all.

UndertheCedartree · 06/08/2021 16:34

I have had overnight oats for breakfast - oats, chia and frozen blueberries soaked in milk overnight and then a few almonds, strawberries, raspberries and Greek yogurt added. I had Greek salad for lunch. We are ordering sushi for dinner so not quite on plan but not too bad, I think.

UndertheCedartree · 06/08/2021 16:37

@Tiredandbored - your mindset change sounds great! I'm also not seeing out takeaway as 'breaking the diet' so might as well eat all the biscuits! It is one meal which myself and my DC will really enjoy while socialising together Smile

UndertheCedartree · 06/08/2021 20:11

So not been snacking much. But had takeaway and now eaten an ice cream, Mars bar and 2 biscuits! Shock

ConfusedParticle · 06/08/2021 20:47

I made a root veg soup today, with celery and creme fraiche. To be honest all I want is a cheese and ham salad toastie.

I have IBS and the plethora of veg has set me off.......although sticking to just protein doesn't suit me either.

I fare well if I mix fresh bread with my veg, salads. I guess we are all different. This has never made a difference to my weight (am in normal range) but I am concerned about why everyone considers bread to be bad for you.

Ive read some of the book, and it's really interesting. It set me off on a crusade months ago to replenish the cupboards with 'safe' stuff.
All in all I havent noticed a difference, im perhaps one of those people who a small amount of wheat/flour doesn't aggravate.

samthebordercollie · 06/08/2021 21:30

@ConfusedParticle bread is considered bad because it is made of refined flour. I'm a bit sceptical about some things in the book (e.g avoid nuts), but the avoidance of UPF, sugar , vegetable oils and refined grains is common sense and advocated in most way of eating/diet plans.

Morning All. Lovely to hear everyone's updates and welcome to the new members!

Am glad I am not the only one with a penchant for ACV. I'd heard of it before of course, and maybe it is a load of old fooey but it certainly tastes nice( to me!)

My second go at soft cheese worked very well , @TheLeadbetterLife you might want to try this in your slow cooker? 6 tabsps lemon juice to a litre of milk ( could have done with less I think) then 10 hrs at 42 degrees, cool and strain for six. Sounds faffy but it really isn't. Takes seconds of effort. I mixed in some chopped chives and garlic purée to one helping et voilà. My very own full fat soft cheese with garlic and herbs. Wink

Someone queried the weighing, and whilst the book recommends ditching the scales, and I get the logic, I am not quite ready to do that yet. I do like to keep track without being obsessed, so I keep it to weekly.

I've come a long way but still got a way to go. Lost nothing this week despite being pretty much on plan- it's the way it goes.

That aside I feel fitter, stronger and healthier than I have for a long time, decades probably - despite being officially overweight still. I think I am also becoming more resilient to stress, ( with one major blip the other week ) which feeds a virtuous circle with the eating, rather than a vicious one.

I had my second reformer Pilates session yesterday. Really love it!

Words · 07/08/2021 05:58

*Less lemon juice

Bestbees · 07/08/2021 07:41

Morning!

I make my own AVC from apple scraps, super easy and feels extra nutritious as its from apples in my garden.

I have had varying success with homemade yoghurt, but I cannot keep up with family demand!

I have from today until Friday to have a really good run if healthy food as I am off camping then. But also need to go shopping so will need to plan some meals too. I am stuffed from fish and chips yesterday so will prob skip breakfast, omlette for lunch and then will decide about dinner later! Will be aiming for no wine this week either, I have been drinking a lot this week a d sure it doesn't help.

RubyGoat · 07/08/2021 08:44

@jewel1968 I buy this creamed coconut instead of tinned coconut milk, from the supermarket. It keeps a pretty long time. Easy to add to curry, soup etc. I just dig a chunk out with a spoon or knife.

jewel1968 · 07/08/2021 09:53

@LegoCaltrops that looks really good. Thanks.

jewel1968 · 07/08/2021 10:06

I noticed I lost weight during lockdown which I could not really understand. I was less active so it didn't make sense to me. The only change I could think of that might have contributed to it was I started baking my own rustic wheaten bread with organic flour and oats. That's the only significant change I can think of.

So, if you really can't give up bread I suggest you make your own.
