Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

Thanks @TooExtraImmatureCheddar, it's great to see so much chat and support meaning we need a 3rd thread!

TheLeadbetterLife · 29/06/2021 23:42

Thanks for the new thread!

Do you think lower carbs should be added to the general principles? There’s a whole section of the plan devoted to it and he seems to be saying that cutting carbs is the key to reducing insulin, and therefore lowering weight set point.

Also, stress reduction.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:59

Sorry, posting quickly to get the new thread up and running. Feel free to add in more principles - I just wanted something to define this from calorie counting or other plans.

Thanks for new thread

I can’t sleep due to work/ life stresses. An ongoing battle. I think if I can reduce my cortisol levels like others have mentioned, then my weight could start dropping off.

I’ve also been on the depo provera injection. This is known to cause weight gain. Now I’m coming off it and not sure what to do next. I’ve been offered a Mirena coil but need to see how that affects weight. Or go without maybe.

I think contraception and menstruation issues can be another cause of weight gain for women alongside diet.

BrightShark · 30/06/2021 00:36

I’ll have a go at adding to principles for any newbies (but please do read the book as it’ll have way more impact than more diet advice)

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No ultra processed foods
Max omega 3 / min 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.
Avoid seed oils (ie hydrogenated vegetable oils)
Reduce stress levels (cortisol)
Sleep more
Regular exercise- don’t need to go mad- just moderate cardio and muscle strengthening.
Drink lots of water

BrightShark · 30/06/2021 00:37

Oh and I forgot - no calorie counting (controversial on mumsnet!)

RagzReturnsRebooted · 30/06/2021 00:58

Thanks for the new thread. Great to see the momentum going and members rising!

Had meatballs for dinner, with courgetti - DH has really got into courgetti, mostly because it means he gets to use the Food Lathe (spiraliser). He's so taken by this gadget that he even lovingly washes it up and puts it away, which is the annoying, fiddly part and the main reason I stopped bothering with the bloody thing. Win win.

Lunch was a ham and cheese roll (last low Carb roll, have used up all the ultra processed low Carb bread now) and strawberries with Greek yogurt, cream and mixed seeds (flax, hemp and chai so not awful omega wise). I take the fruit and yoghurt thing to work to have if I feel I need breakfast, but never eat it before 10:30am and often end up not eating it until lunch. I'm kind of doing 16:8 fasting at the same time, not really intentionally.

I agree, though its certainly not meant to be as low carb as a keto diet but certainly much lower than the standard British diet. I try to only have a 'main carb' like potatoes or rice once a day, but it's so nice not to be stressing about the carbs in everything. I lost a lot of weight on low Carb, but it was really hard work and difficult to stick to long term (obviously). I feel much better on fewer carbs, but keto level low is too much for me (especially with an underactive thyroid) so this way of eating is a good balance.

Wow you all move quick! Lost my post on the last thread somewhere!

Anyway, I have another question (I'm about half way through the book now I think, but maybe you'll be able to help quicker than I can read!).

I spent 3 months on a personal training course a few months ago. Strict calorie controlled (about 1500 per day) with 5 workouts a week. I lost 7lbs in the first week and then NOTHING for the rest of the time. I ate high protein, but probably high carb too. I only tracked protein and calories.
I honestly don't eat that much, and I still can't lose weight. I am a size 20. I hope this works!

My main advice is, finish the book 😊

But in outline:

Your body naturally knows how fat it is and will adjust metabolism and hunger to compensate. However this system is often disrupted by;

  1. too much sugar = too much insulin. This blocks the leptin receptors and stops your body understanding it is fat

  2. too much omega 6. I can't recall the exact mechanism but basically same result.

I recommend the copper coil (non hormonal). I came off every hormonal contraceptive on the market one after another and this has totally sorted me out.

Aria999 · 30/06/2021 04:19

@TammyTwoSwanson

So basically reduce sugar and omega 6 and your body will start to adjust to a good weight.

Eat fats and proteins to fill you up. As much veg and dairy as you like. Cook in olive oil or butter, avoid vegetable oil like the plague.

So far it seems to be working like magic. I have often been hot at night as my body just burns off the stuff it doesn't need. (I am fairly new to this and have lost 4 lbs in two weeks but it is SO effortless, basically just eating more cheese egg and yoghurt and less bread).

Good Morning everyone, and thanks for the new thread!

I feel a bit bleary this morning. I suspect this is more feline than diet-related though. One of mine decided she wanted a very early breakfast and went into full on 'wake up the human' mode.

I got the full works - the pouncing, the picking at the duvet, the licking of eyelids ( I was pretending to be dead, but she wasn't fooled.)

Off to gym shortly. I've modified my routine recently to include more weights/resistance because I enjoy that and find I get very bored on the elliptical thing. Also I think I have been overdoing it a bit and am recovering from a strained back/hip.

samthebordercollie · 30/06/2021 06:38

Another new thread already! Thanks TooExtraImmatureCheddar

I think CatherineCawood started a recipe thread for this WOE but I can't find the link, maybe someone else can post it?

Billybagpuss · 30/06/2021 06:43

Just checking in for the new thread, I went swimming last night always a good scales day after that 😊

HighlandCowbag · 30/06/2021 07:34

Ooo shiny new thread.

I think with the carbs thing, it's the last section I think in the book. This woe is a big change physically and mentally and I would say that the GI index is the most fiddly and tracky and I wouldn't worry about that too much. My carbs have fallen naturally in a massive way, just cutting out wheat does that. Having salad for lunch rather than a sarnie, and no breakfast cereals or biscuits or chocolate makes a huge difference.

Interestingly even doing sw and religiously sticking to it, I found my loss would stall if I had bread as my HEB.

I feel very bleary eyed this morning. Watched football and had far too many beers. Today will be salad for lunch and then am making a shepherds pie for dinner. Really looking forward to dinner, its not very summery but everyone (apart from veggie dd) loves it.

Sackofspuds · 30/06/2021 07:45

Just stumbled across this thread and interested in the plan. Are there suggested calorie/ macros in the book or is it all intuitive?

BrightShark · 30/06/2021 08:05

@Sackofspuds yes 150g of carbs to start with decreasing to 80g per day.

You definitely need to read the book as it’s more of a mindset shift than an eating plan. You need to know the science behind it really to motivate you.

Lots of us have had great health benefits besides weight loss. For me, inflammation (hip pain, knee/ leg all gone) and IBS gone.

I am also able to concentrate better and am finding my work production rate speeding up.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 30/06/2021 08:23

Does anyone have the links to the previous posts? I'm halfway through the book but it's good to read other people's experiences.

Sackofspuds · 30/06/2021 08:25

BrightShark. I am low carbing below this and calorie counting at the minute. I am losing weight. My appetite is much lower on low carb but my energy levels are depleted. I am used to counting and would be scared not to. My balances aren't right at the moment so was wondering if this would help?

Sackofspuds · 30/06/2021 08:26

(I also train 6-8 hours a week)

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 30/06/2021 08:30

Good morning, just marking my place on the new thread. 🙂

collywobble · 30/06/2021 08:31

Thank you for the new thread. It's amazing how quickly the last one filled up.

TheLeadbetterLife · 30/06/2021 08:41

@Sackofspuds

Dr Jenkinson does say that he doesn’t recommend very low carb or keto, but if you get past the first set of recommendations in his plan and still have more weight to lose (as I do), you need to count carbs age get glycemic load under 80g per day ideally.

He does also say though that if you’re exercising, you need more carbs to replenish the liver. Maybe that’s why your energy levels are low? Perhaps try adding a potato a day, or a bit of rice?

TheLeadbetterLife · 30/06/2021 08:43

And you might need more fat too, if you’re also calorie counting. Not all calories are equal - don’t be afraid of fats (except seed oils!).
