6 stone to lose - my journey!

StanleyOscar · 28/05/2021 11:14

Hi everyone, long-time lurker here but decided to pop my head up and talk about my weight loss journey which I have just begun.

49 years old, yo-yo dieter for approx 20 years. Never have much problem loosing weight, just can't keep it off. So, I joined Slimming World on Wednesday and have around 6 stone to lose. So far I have lost 3lb, which is to be expected in week 1. Very much enjoyed the group meeting, and the meals/recipes are good too.

So far, so good. Anyone else on their journey too?

Thank you for the weight distribution information picklemewalnuts. Smile
I basically can't be trusted around certain types of food! That kind of means they are off the table unless I'm at restaurants where portion control is externally enforced! I think sugary foods lead to me binging more of them. Sensible foods don't have the same effect.

I could have written this myself! My danger time is at night, specially when I can't sleep. Because of this I've had to take all the 'goodies' out my flat. I can't be trusted round sweet food, I eat the lot. I also can take or leave savoury.
Oh the other hand, I realised yesterday that by Christmas I should be maintaining! So excited, an end goal in sight! Grin
Thank you WheresMyTweezers (I should have made it clearer, I'm 11st 5.2lbs atm.) Glad you STS today and not put on. I remember when I joined WW (Decades! Shock ) years ago I would have a pattern of lose one week, stay the same the next, put on next week, stay the same/lose a lb. I'm sure it was all hormonal.

StanleyOscar · 07/07/2021 13:12

Weighing in day today, 4.5lbs loss this week and I won 'Slimmer of the Week' for the 3rd time! Smile

Didn't get the '1.5 Stone Award' this week as there is a 2.5lbs discrepancy between the SW scales and my home scales due to wearing clothing, and so I am half a pound off 1.5 stone loss at SW Sad

Home scales this morning = 16st 9.5lbs
SW Scales = 16st 12lbs

Start Weight = 18st 4.5lbs
Current Weight = 16st 9.5lbs
Target Weight = 12st 7lbs
Loss so far = 23lbs

As regards snacks, treats etc, I agree with all that @73kittycat73, @picklemewalnuts and others have said. For me, the ONLY method that works is to NOT have ANY snacks, treats or goodies in the house, that way there is no temptation. If there are treats in the house, I have no discipline, I WILL make allowances and excuses as to why I can eat bad food. It starts with the odd bag of crisps, biscuit, handful of peanuts, and it snowballs from there. In no time at all I end up back at square one. Food was my best friend, but now I have broken up with it and have some new friends, like my treadmill, tennis racket, spinbike...

As for BMI, I don't bother. There are just too many factors to take into account when measuring it, I very much doubt I would ever get an accurate reading. There is certainly no way Fitbit etc could possibly know my BMI, and any estimate is bound to be way out. So, I don't bother, I just stick to weight & inches, and they are both dropping.

Congratulations on the 4.5 lost StanleyOscar! Star I'm sure you'll have that 1.5 stone award next week. Damn pesky clothes. Grin
I'm trying to think of a non food treat I can have when I get down to 10 st something, any ideas anyone? I can't go out far, because of the agoraphobia, but can make it to two local convenience shops. I do order online though, my weekly food shop (Sainsburys and Asda.) and from Amazon, Ebay etc. I'm getting my hair cut (Mobile hairdresser.) next month. I have no idea!

WheresMyTweezers · 08/07/2021 07:15

Woah that's a cracking loss @StanleyOscar - well done!

Another STS for me today which I'm chuffed about. But, get this...I measured my waist a week ago, and then again on Saturday - 1cm down. Measured again today 3cm up so 2cm overall! I KNEW I was bloated. (Hips have stayed the same and I didn't measure but as I'd already put my bra on).

Was feeling all optimistic and have joined the 7lb off in July thread (8lb off in July takes me to my first stone) and then I remembered I'm going away this month! I will be doing lots of walking, but I'm going to have to think carefully about lunches etc and not just grab a quick pasty etc. Hard as we're in a hotel, not self-catered accommodation so we will be eating out most of the time. I WILL be strong!

73kittycat73 · 08/07/2021 12:22

Good luck food wise for your holiday WheresMyTweezers, though it sounds like you are in the right mindset. Smile I'm on one of the lose 7lbs threads, can't remember which one just yet. It gets a bit confusing! Grin
I've never stayed in a hotel. I'd order room service as a treat and just to see what it's like! Grin
I hope you have a fabulous holiday. Smile
How are you today StanleyOscar?
I hope you are having a lovely time on holiday picklemewalnuts?!
Does any one here have Sky tv? Movies 24 is showing Christmas films all this month! Xmas Smile

StanleyOscar · 08/07/2021 12:57

@WheresMyTweezers - Have a super holiday! I am sure with plenty of walking etc you will be fine. If you can't enjoy a few goodies on holiday, then what's the point. You are suppose to have fun, and I am sure with your dieting knowledge you will be able to enjoy food, but not go overboard.

@picklemewalnuts - How's the holiday going?

@73kittycat73 - I'm doing good thanks, STS at this morning's weigh in on the home scales, which is fine. My next goal is 16st 6lbs which will be a 10% weight loss, then 16st 4lbs and that will be 2 stone loss.

When you do get to stay in a hotel, don't worry about the room service, go straight for the drinks cabinet! Wine Grin

Oh, and I love christmas!

@73kittycat73 I don't think I've ever ordered room service!
@StanleyOscar I'm dead tight so I've been known to stock up on premixed cans of G&T and lash them in the fridge. Couple of years ago we went to a place where they were £5 each in the minibar but I'd got 10 for £10 from Tesco.

Definitely take your own booze on holiday!

We ordered room service in Australia, it was much more normal there- the rooms were big and had a table set up, and the menu was the same wherever you were in the hotel. Never done it here though.

Wetherspoons are great hotels- good standard, good value, and good cheap food downstairs whenever you want!

I'm having a nice time- I overdid it yesterday and felt a bit grumpy. I find the whole park here, walk to the tourist attraction there, then down to the seafront explore the town and back to the car absolutely exhausting. Far harder than a walk in the country. Though this morning's 12000 steps along the cliffs was pretty hard going! I really need to build my stamina.

I'm dreading weighing in on Saturday! It shouldn't be awful, I may even sts. We'll see. I'm so, so close to the 4.5 stone award.

Re a treat, Kittycat, how much do you want to spend? A bag or shoes, perhaps, or an item of clothing?

Have I mentioned I buy a charm every half stone for my charm bracelet? It's pretty rattly now! Excuse the bad picture- one handed was a bit awkward!

73kittycat73 · 08/07/2021 18:07

StanleyOscar: Oh, and I love christmas!
In that case, may I just leave this here. Xmas Smile
Thank you for the treat suggestions picklemewalnuts. Smile Glad you are having a nice time on holiday. Certainly sounds like you are keeping your steps up! Shock Good luck for Saturday's weigh in, I'm sure you got this. Star Well done on almost being at the 4.5 stone award, that's really good going!

WheresMyTweezers · 09/07/2021 07:09

1lb off today - delighted tbh. That's 10lb off in total.
Scale hovered over 2lb but settled on 1lb but if it had been 2lb, I'd have been into my next stone bracket. Going to start counting Saturday as my official weigh day so fingers crossed I get to that next bracket tomorrow.

Weirdly I had LOADS of energy last night and went out for a long walk even though I already had my steps in. I'm going to have long-term mobility issues from the accident I had last year but walking I can do so I'm doing it!

@picklemewalnuts - wow you have lost so much!

@73kittycat73 - for your treat, pick something you will use often, and you will see regularly. Life's too short for special occasion things, but also you'll be spurred on every time you use it.

73kittycat73 · 09/07/2021 11:31

Good luck reaching that next stone bracket WheresMyTweezers. I'm really hoping to do the same on Monday, but that would be a 5lb loss in two weeks. One can only hope! Grin
That's a really good tip with what to reward myself with there WheresMyTweezers, thank you. I shall have a good think. Maybe a fancy pen?

picklemewalnuts · 09/07/2021 15:59

Well done, tweezers!

I'm back home, and have popped on the scale. Not a proper weigh in, as it was lunch time and I'd eaten a big breakfast. I was 94kg, which I think is the same as my last weigh in. That would mean I'm on target for a small loss, despite everything! I'm not quite sure- it doesn't say when that was, on the app. It's possible I missed a weigh in out. It frustrates me that it doesn't auto sync with the group leader's info!

picklemewalnuts · 09/07/2021 15:59

Let us know what you choose, Kittycat!

73kittycat73 · 09/07/2021 18:52

Will do picklemewalnuts. Smile
Well done on STS, and even losing some whilst you've been on holiday! Star All that walking you did might have helped some? Do you need a holiday to recover from your holiday? Grin

73kittycat73 · 09/07/2021 19:56

I bought my reward. Some Christmas themed pens. Grin You always need pens, and it's almost Christmas...lol

picklemewalnuts · 09/07/2021 20:37

Oh lovely! Nice choice!

WheresMyTweezers · 10/07/2021 09:02

@picklemewalnuts that's fantastic - and filling me with inspiration ahead of my little break!

@73kittycat73 glad you've treated yourself.

Saturday so official weigh in day for me. Another 1lb off (again, scale hovered over 2 then went back to 1) so 11lb in total AND THAT TAKES ME INTO A LOWER STONE BRACKET Star First target achieved Star

Another 3lb and I've got to my first stone.

picklemewalnuts · 10/07/2021 09:52

Oh well done tweezers! Good work.
I went on the wii to weigh in, 2lb off since last time, which was 3 weeks ago. I set a longer term target, 3 months to be overweight instead of obese, by bmi. That's 1.5lb a week. It's an arbitrary point, but something to aim for. And an achievable, sustainable one.
That will be about a year since I started, and to move from morbidly obese to overweight.

73kittycat73 · 10/07/2021 11:55

Thank you WheresMyTweezers and congratulations on the weight lost and moving down that stone bracket! Star 11lbs is awesome! Star
Well done on the 2lb loss picklemewalnuts! Star Good luck with your BMI goals. I'm aiming for the 'normal' (Is that what it's called? Seems wrong calling it that but my mind has just gone blank! Sorry if I offend anyone. Blush Can't think what it's called...).

picklemewalnuts · 10/07/2021 13:14

It's 'healthy'. But yes, 'normal' is what it feels like. I'll always be high end of healthy at the very lowest. Big bones, ya know! So I'll get to overweight and the reassess. The categories are huge at the 40 mark, not so huge at the 30 mark.

ThroughThinkandThing · 10/07/2021 16:36

May I join you?

I also have six (ish) stone to lose, and am almost one stone down (started at 16 stone with a BMI of 36, now at 15st1 with a BMI of 34).

My first target is a size 18 dress by mid August (for a wedding...) and it is currently too small on the hips by a couple of inches. I've lost 1.5 inches so far, and 2.5 to go (though magic pants may have to be deployed). I have a back up dress, but don't like it as much!

picklemewalnuts · 10/07/2021 16:37

That's a great start, Through! Magic pants are a good back up. But everything feels better when it's not tight.

Do you have a plan?

ThroughThinkandThing · 10/07/2021 16:49

Thank you!

I am calorie counting and using the NHS weight loss app. The part that I am finding really difficult is exercise. I'm happy with what I'm eating, don't feel hungry, have the occasional treat etc. I just am not finding the motivation to move more, and while weight loss is mainly about diet, I know I need to be exercising.

picklemewalnuts · 10/07/2021 17:14

What stops you, do you think?
I have a trampette which helped me get my steps up in the winter. I could give the dog a short cold miserable walk, then bounce in front of the tv in comfort!

It's really helped me when family members walk with me. DH comes after dinner, and DS often comes in the morning.
