Weight loss for vegetarians

LargeInCharge · 16/04/2021 12:55

Hello!
I’ve been a vegetarian nearly all my life and I want to lose weight to be healthier (and to look better in my clothes) so I thought I’d create a space where fellow veggies (and vegans too) can share their weight loss journeys, food ideas, recipes and how they are feeling.

I started my journey on Tuesday so this is day 4 for me. My daily calorie limit is 1200.

Weight - 15st 4 (weighed on day 1)
Height - 5’ 9
Goal weight - 10st 7

How I gained weight - not exercising, eating crisps, cake, too many carbs and booze.
Positive changes - trying to be more active, ditched the crisps, cake and booze. Limiting my carbs as much as I can.

No pressure to reveal weight or anything that’s personal to you.

Good luck. 🥗🌽🥦🥬🥕🥒🫑🥑🥭🍅🍑🍓🍌🥥🫐

Got Asda coming on Thursday, hope they are in stock!

TheSlayer · 29/06/2021 22:53

HI, haven't read the whole thread but I'm a vegan looking to lose weight.
I'm currently 13 stone and need to get to around 10 stone.
I used to be super active but since baby and pandemic hit at the same time I've been sedentary. I'm also on these awful antidepressants that make me get munchies like crazy. That and the stress eating have meant I have piled it on to such an extent that my BMI is unhealthy for the first time in my life.
Very overwhelming and not sure where to start!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 29/06/2021 23:45

That's a similar starting/goal weight to me.

I've lost around 7lb since I started posting on here.

More importantly, I've stopped eating mindlessly. Hopefully that will translate to a bit more weight loss in future but it has slowed down recently.

LargeInCharge · 30/06/2021 09:13

Thank you @Yourownpersonaljesus

I hope Asda don’t let you down @73kittycat73

Welcome @TheSlayer are you thinking about calorie counting or sw, ww, noom etc? Have a good research and see which would suit you best. You could also try switching out some high calorie foods for low ones.
Let us know what you decide and start with small goals.

I hope everyone’s doing well.

Hi LargeInCharge. Smile They are due tomorrow so will report back if they're in!

TheSlayer · 30/06/2021 12:10

I'm starting by switching out high calorie junk, which I eat a ridiculous amount of, to other carbohydrates like toast, rice crackers.
I need something high carb if anyone can recommend? My body doesn't run without carbs.
I've managed to get some exercise in as little one actually went down in his cot during the day, which is unheard of!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/06/2021 15:09

I'm really enjoying potatoes, honestly.
And fancy porridge.

73kittycat73 · 30/06/2021 20:55

I second the potatoes. Jacket specially. Also, what about rice, pasta, etc?

TheSlayer · 30/06/2021 23:30

Great ideas. I need something like snacks Jacks to keep the crisp craving at bay? Any ideas? Going shopping tomorrow so want to be prepared!
I'm also going to get lots of veg to spiralise so any ideas for that would be gratefully received.

73kittycat73 · 01/07/2021 18:58

My lemon cheesecake yogurts from Asda arrived. Very thick but tasted OK. I will eat the ones I've got. Thank you for the recommendation. Smile

Yourownpersonaljesus · 01/07/2021 19:45

Welcome @TheSlayer. I like these: www.ocado.com/products/chika-s-bongo-bbq-corn-and-nut-mix-531252011 and these: www.ocado.com/products/graze-nutty-protein-power-snack-mix-punchy-chilli-lime-318671011 in place of crisps. Also bought these recently: www.ocado.com/products/kallo-protein-packed-lentil-cakes-with-seeds-407020011 to have with humous or philadelphia. I tried one plain yesterday and they were nice.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 01/07/2021 19:49

@73kittycat73 I thought the yoghurts were okay but a bit artificial tasting, they are a good source of protein though so will buy them again. I prefer natural skyr with honey or fruit (or both). I also sometimes add a spoonful of no added sugar high protein granola (goes really well with banana).

73kittycat73 · 01/07/2021 20:09

Thank you for those tips Yourownpersonaljesus. Smile They are low calorie as well as high in protein so I might get them again next time I go to Asda. Sainsbury's subsituted the other yogurts again, with something different this time. I will try one of those tomorrow.

@TheSlayer

@TheSlayer last August I was around 13 and a half stone. Over the previous 10 years my weight slowly crept up. I started off by cutting out evening snacking, which I was doing a lot of. I stopped buying crisps and biscuits as I have no self control. Like you I replaced unhealthy snacks with healthier versions. I still eat chocolate but much less of it. I also started exercising 5 times a week - just HIIT workouts on YouTube. I hadn't exercised for 20 years so this was tough. I don't exercise so often at the moment as work is very busy and I don't feel like it when I get home. I now weigh about 10 stone 5lb. The loss has been very slow and steady but hopefully that means I can keep it off. Well done on getting started, especially with a young baby. That's impressive.
LargeInCharge · 06/07/2021 10:00

Weigh day.

SW - 214lbs
Week 1 - 209.8
Week 2 - 206.8
Week 3 - 205.6
Week 4 - 204.4
Week 5 - 202.0
Week 6 - 198.8
Week 7 - 197.8
Week 8 - 195.8
Week 9 - 194.6
Week 10-190.4
Week 11-189.4
Week 12-189

So .4 lost. I did go over my calories by 127 on Saturday but I was under every other day. Oh well onwards we go.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/07/2021 11:11

Well done on a loss!

I have stalled completely just now.
Again, I am sticking to the changes I implemented- rarely snacking, not drinking calories.
I guess at a certain point you do just stall a bit as your metabolism adjusts.
I'm trying not to give up. At least I'm not putting weight on!

73kittycat73 · 06/07/2021 11:18

Usualy home order from Sainsburys and Asda but have disvovered loads of new vegetarian meals I haven't tried before on Ocado. The delivery is this Saturday. Will report back as I try the food, went a bit mad on freezer stuff. Grin I was just so excited to find something different. Smile

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/07/2021 11:56

That is extremely exciting.
I'm still riding high on the wave of finding that squeaky bean pastrami that's always getting mentioned in here.
We had it on pizza last night and it was lovely.

LargeInCharge · 06/07/2021 12:08

Cheers @SuperLoudPoppingAction I like your point of view about at least you’re not gaining. I’ll try that squeaky bean pastrami.

TheSlayer · 11/07/2021 18:19

So I have stopped excessive snacking, we don't even have crisps in the house so I have gone from at least two packets in the evening to a couple of rice cakes, the occasional popcorn...
And I've put on half a kilogramConfused
Has anyone else put on before they started to lose weight? I swear my body is working backwards!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 11/07/2021 19:12

I found it went very slowly for 3 weeks or so. Then progressed as expected. Then slowed down again!

I'm on a trial of noom which is interesting. I dont think it would help me work out why I wasn't losing weight though

LargeInCharge · 13/07/2021 11:19

On Sunday I had my first takeaway since I started my diet back in April. I had half a large papa johns pizza, potato tots and marmite scrolls.
Yesterday I felt horrendous, like I was hungover but I didn’t drink any booze. Headache, nausea and lethargic and 191 pounds eek.

Today I weighed myself and I’m 189.0, exactly the same as last Tuesday. Thank God the hangover’s finally gone and I won’t be eating takeaway again that’s for sure.

OP posts:
TheSlayer · 13/07/2021 11:53

Sorry you felt hungover, Largeandincharge that does sound rather good though. GrinBlush
I'm still stalled at 184. Going shopping today and I have a plan. Going to:
Star Limit processed protein sources to tea.
Star Try and focus on whole grains and vegetables for lunch.
Star Allowing bread because I don't cope well without carbs.
Star Incorporate a few DrBarnard Kickstart recipes into my repertoire with the hope to gradually build them up.

My main problem is still after meal snacking, particularly carbs. I'm not sure how to handle that. I've tried having rice cakes but I get through a lot which defeats the object. Does anyone have any good snacking strategies? I definitely need something because I am on antidepressants which make me snack like crazy.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/07/2021 16:34

The noom theory is that the more water something has, the lower the nutritional density so you can eat loads, get full and not consume more calories than planned.

So eg an apple or a huge bowl of lettuce would fall into that category.

Im trying to do this more, but I really crave dry, crunchy things.
It seems to suggest kale chips for this purpose. Or roasted chickpeas (without loads of oil).

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/07/2021 16:35

Oh the other thing is boiled potatoes. Which is carbs.
I've been eating boiled potatoes to try and see how well the plan works.
I seem to have lost 1lb so that is something.
