Weight loss for vegetarians

LargeInCharge · 16/04/2021 12:55

Hello!
I’ve been a vegetarian nearly all my life and I want to lose weight to be healthier (and to look better in my clothes) so I thought I’d create a space where fellow veggies (and vegans too) can share their weight loss journeys, food ideas, recipes and how they are feeling.

I started my journey on Tuesday so this is day 4 for me. My daily calorie limit is 1200.

Weight - 15st 4 (weighed on day 1)
Height - 5’ 9
Goal weight - 10st 7

How I gained weight - not exercising, eating crisps, cake, too many carbs and booze.
Positive changes - trying to be more active, ditched the crisps, cake and booze. Limiting my carbs as much as I can.

No pressure to reveal weight or anything that’s personal to you.

Good luck. 🥗🌽🥦🥬🥕🥒🫑🥑🥭🍅🍑🍓🍌🥥🫐

Hi, I hope you don't mind me popping in, but I have a question I wondered if you can help me with please? I need to know what food I can get a good source of protein from? I do eat eggs but I don't like Quorn (Or mushrooms). I like Linda McCartneys' food. I don't drink cows' milk but I do like soya milk. I am taking a daily vegan protein shake but it's just giving me 17g of protein. I heard women need about 45g a day? I think I'm taking in 25-30g a day. Any ideas on what I could eat to up my protein would be really appreciated. Thanks. Smile

purplegirl13 · 23/06/2021 19:14

@73kittycat73 ask away!

i aim for as close to 60g a day, and some times I hot 40/50g and others 70+.

I know you've mentioned not having cows milk so some of my suggestions might not be applicable.

Just off the top of my head:

Greek yogurt is a great source of protein, as is cottage cheese.
Nuts
Edamame beans (I like the the ones in a pods as an afternoon snack)
I rarely have quorn products, but do like vivera, Linda M, Ooumph (sp?) products - soy based products
Eggs I know you've mentioned already but scrambled eggs/omelettes have become a go-to, as well as boiled eggs as a snack
Lentils/dals etc or even lentil/bean based veggie burgers
Cheese
Tofu - I think a few of us on this thread are a fan of the tofoo brand as it's a firmer texture
Tempeh - I tried this for the first time last week and you'll need to double check but I think it has more protein per 100g than tofu

purplegirl13 · 23/06/2021 19:15

*hit, not hot

purplegirl13 · 23/06/2021 19:21

@LargeInCharge well done on the loss!

purplegirl13 · 23/06/2021 19:22

@Themadcatparade are you back to low carb meals? I could do with some inspiration

purplegirl13 · 23/06/2021 19:25

@SuperLoudPoppingAction I love a thai curry, there's just something so comforting about the flavours. It's my go to if I feel a cold coming on.

73kittycat73 · 23/06/2021 21:35

Thank you so much purplegirl13! I will have a good look at Greek Yogurts. Thank you for the advice. [smaile]

Yourownpersonaljesus · 23/06/2021 22:05

@73kittycat73 I've been trying to increase my protein lately too. I'm eating nuts most days. Love these: www.ocado.com/products/chika-s-bongo-bbq-corn-and-nut-mix-531252011 and these: www.ocado.com/products/graze-nutty-protein-power-snack-mix-punchy-chilli-lime-318671011
Also the Trek protein bars are nice for breakfast: www.ocado.com/search?entry=trek

Today I had 88g of protein though I did eat around 1700 calories. I did eat quorn though which I know you don't. Some of my protein today came from some reduced fat cheddar and kvarg yoghurt which I'm guessing you don't eat if you don't drink cow's milk.

LargeInCharge · 24/06/2021 01:09

Cheers @purplegirl13

Welcome @73kittycat73

I also recently tried tempeh for the protein. A tip is to steam it before marinating so it takes on more flavour.

Hello all. Smile Thank you for the welcome. I found some high protein yogurts on Sainsburys, here I have ordered them with my shop due Saturday. I shall report back!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/06/2021 15:27

I love the quark yoghurts. They fill me up properly.

Has anyone tried silken tofu in mac and cheese sauce?
Also if anyone knows where you can get legume pasta like the barilla chickpea kind please tell me!

purplegirl13 · 24/06/2021 15:34

super I don't have an aldi near me but l hear they do a black bean spaghetti. I've also bought chickpea pasta from the fresh aisles in sainburys before

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/06/2021 19:23

Oh I hadn't thought of black bean spaghetti. I think they might only sell it now and again but I will keep an eye out. Thanks!

The mac and cheese was lovely. I quadrupled the recipe as it would have been teeny.
The sauce went together so quickly. I actually hate making white sauce so it was a good idea for me personally. But also it had zero flour (other than in the pasta).
I added some squeaky bean pastrami, some roast butternut squash and some Korean chilli powder.

73kittycat73 · 27/06/2021 11:13

Sainsburys' substituted my strawberry 20% protein yogurt for raspberry 15% ones. They taste rank! And I think it gave me acid reflux. (Only consumed one other thing and hope that wasn't the cause, taking them an hour apart today to see which one caused the reflux.)

Yourownpersonaljesus · 27/06/2021 18:09

That;s annoying @73kittycat73. I bought some of these yesterday: lindahls.co.uk/products/lemon-cheesecake/
I haven't tried them yet but they are really high in protein. Are they the same brand as your strawberry ones?

73kittycat73 · 27/06/2021 19:46

Oh, thank you Yourownpersonaljesus. Smile I used to eat those yogurts for breakfast. I'll have to find a supplier (Sainsbury's online don't have them.)

Yourownpersonaljesus · 27/06/2021 20:23

I actually found them in Poundland believe it or not! Three for a pound. They also had the 10 cal jellies for the same price.

73kittycat73 · 27/06/2021 20:28

Cool! I' have found them in Asda, will have to book a slot for them Thank you. Smile
