Frustrated with gaining half a stone over the course of the day - help

I had a baby in December and I gained quite a lot of weight when I was carrying him.

I managed to get down to 12’10 a couple of weeks ago. My target is 9’10 so was quite pleased. But then I randomly gained 2lbs and the scales just wouldn’t move from 12’12. Then this morning I was down to 12’7. I thought finally ... maybe it was just that it all came off at once. Randomly stood on them just now and back to 12’12!

What is going on!? Obviously I can’t do much with a young baby but we walk miles and I never eat over 1000 calories.

Stop weighing yourself daily . It's physically impossible to gain that much weight in a day. Your body will fluctuate over the days. If you want to weigh regularly, weigh daily and do a weekly average. If you are really walking that much and in that much of a calorie deficit then you will lose weight.

MazekeenSmith · 04/04/2021 16:19

Why are you weighing yourself later in the day? Stick to the mornings

TakeYourFinalPosition · 04/04/2021 16:21

Weigh yourself at the same time of the day.

You will gain weight during the day, it’s natural.

daffodilsandprimroses · 04/04/2021 16:27

I know but the thing is, in ‘normal’ times (if I was going to SW or it’s equivalent) I would be being weighed during the day. It’s just really annoying me!

Firstly, stop weighing yourself so much.
You gain water weight during the day. Weight gain shown on the scales is not the same as fat gain.

Secondly, you need to eat sooo much more than 1000 calories for effective and long term fat loss.
Search for TDEE calculator to find out what your maintenance calories are and then subtract a MAXIMUM of 500 from that number to find out how much you should be eating. I was shocked by this number! I’ve lost over 2 stone in the last 3 months by eating 1900 calories a day!

Arbadacarba · 04/04/2021 16:33

Just a thought - if your scales are all over the place, are you sure they're working correctly?

merryhouse · 04/04/2021 16:39

Half a stone? It's your scales. Possibly just need a new battery, possibly completely gone.

daffodilsandprimroses · 04/04/2021 16:57

I’m not very tall, I’d gain weight on 1900 calories.

I think the scales are right - I just don’t really understand why they keep jumping back to 12’12. It’s so discouraging.

It's normal to be heavier later in the day. Stop weighing multiple times a day, it's not helpful for you.

Nohomemadecandles · 04/04/2021 17:13

You don't lose weight for what the scales say. It's either health or how you look. I'm guessing you don't suddenly look 7lbs heavier, do you?
Stop weighing so often. It isn't healthy. Or indicative of anything important!

Babyiskickingmyribs · 04/04/2021 19:34

Maybe try weighing yourself once a week? Like first thing on a Saturday morning maybe, naked, before getting dressed. Clothes and shoes weigh something too.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/04/2021 19:35

I can do 2+ kilo wbetween two days easy.

Weightloss is not just a straight line down. And especially not if you weight after eating and deinking during the day....

PollyDarton1 · 04/04/2021 19:39

Absolutely categorically normal to weigh more later in the day than at the start. You're at your lightest first thing in the morning (after a wee).

Stop weighing yourself in the evenings - just weigh in the mornings (if you have to daily) and definitely check your TDEE out - eating less than 1000 calories will put your body into starvation mode and essentially your body won't lose the weight you expect as it's not nourished enough. Additionally, when you do start eating normally you'll be more likely to gain weight because your body has been deprived.

AndreaMarteau · 04/04/2021 20:19

I've just had the exact same thing happen. I've gained 4lb today, after barely eating anything (not hungry). Just joked with DP that gravity must be exerting itself more today or the air is heavier.

I know you're not supposed to weigh yourself everyday, but I need to see the number on the scales to stop me eating and for incentive. Sometimes I weigh more in the morning and less in the afternoon and vice versa.

Danni91 · 04/04/2021 20:27

Scales will show different weights even a few inches side to side
Clearly your jeans fit, you feel better. Whats the number matter?

Don't focus on digits, focus on measurements & health. The numbers will change constantly through the day/week!

Congrats on the baby!

DIshedUp · 04/04/2021 20:31

Weigh yourself first thing in the morning

Its not half a stone its 5lbs, which is probably your dinner or needing a poo. That's a natural amount of fluctuation for the day, you cant possibly gain 5lbs of fat in day

If you aren't losing weight on 1000kcal a day you need to see your doctor.

Danni91 · 04/04/2021 20:32

Tbh though, all i ever see when it comes to slimming world / weight watchers is

'Better go steady today its weigh in day' or
'Late dinner today after weigh in' and so on.

Its universal knowledge youll weigh more after a meal or two, or lots of drinks, or wearing certain clothes

Thats why we all like to weigh ourselves in the morning naked after a pee and not after a bottle of wine & a chinese ! Grin

redcandlelight · 04/04/2021 20:33

a kilo or so could be just stomach/gut content.
in women, the days before the period can make you store more water and therefore make you heavier.

are the scales on a flat & hard surface? if not then the weight can vary greately.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/04/2021 20:36

Where do you think the food and water go during the day🙈

I once stood on a scale before and after drinking a pint testing this😂 Even if you pee, average single pee is 250-400ml.

daffodilsandprimroses · 04/04/2021 20:39

I know schrodinger but let’s say the scales are 12’10 in the morning and 12’12 at 2. But then today they were 12’7 in the morning so you’d think 12’9 at 2 but they just keep going back to 12’12 and it’s driving me mad! Smile

safetyzone · 04/04/2021 20:42

I think you have to stop obsessing with the scales numbers. The fluctuations are really not important.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/04/2021 20:42

I siad it elsewhere. Bodies smell fear. They are like HP printers.
You want them to do something and they either pretend you never made the request or just do something different.

As pp said, it can be period. Mine get affected by salt it seems. And weather! I swell up in heat. So there can be little things which normally you wouldn't even realise, but they show up massively.

Anyway. Weighting later in the day is bit masochistic🙈

I love it!
Vooga · 04/04/2021 20:53

My weight can fluctuate by around 2kg during a day. I never weigh during the day or evening.

EgSk · 06/04/2021 14:59

My weight fluctuates 2 kilo every day - Ovulation, periods, water retention, what I eat and drink all play a role . I’ve been frustrated with weight gain too, especially after eating healthy and exercise but keep it up, weigh again in a week and you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
