Start the day with a good breakfast.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 27/02/2021 00:02

Don't deny yourself anything but just have a little of what you fancy and as pp said don't let one little slip up turn into a bad day or week

Yes, you're right, if you insist on shopping at one shop that doesn't sell the things you need, you won't be able to get the things you need. There's a very obvious change you could make to your habits that would widen the foods available to you.

AnExcellentWalker · 27/02/2021 00:06

I like the Lucy Bee coconut cream, it comes in a big jar. Very good value for money & I've found it actually keeps perfectly well for a while beyond the best before date as well. Definitely need a knife or something to scrape it out of the jar though, in cold weather.

LApprentiSorcier · 27/02/2021 00:06

@SchrodingersImmigrant Well, I will see how I go once I get hauled back into the office. It's easy when you are WFH to cook in the time you would normally have been travelling, and of course having access to your own kitchen when it comes to lunch.

I am not shopping in ONE shop. The problem is that shop store what's selling in the area. Which means they have some odd things they don't have other. I need to go to the big asda 5 miles away to get wasabi because my asda has sushi rice, seaweed, but refuses to stock wasabi or pickled ginger. I also dabble in tesco. 3 or of them in fact.
The issue is that all of them are selling pretty similarly limited stuff. They will have totally different stock in a city 60 miles away though. So yeah. I may score lucky, but frankly. I won't be shopping in x stores each week. You know. Fuel, time, etc. 3 (rotating postcodes though of asdas and tescos and foreign shops) are enough imo.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 27/02/2021 00:11

@LApprentiSorcier oh yes. That must be much harder! Good luck!

Don't put too much fuel in the body, I think of it like a car, it needs energy however if you keep topping the car up eventually, you will fill the tank with fuel and then it will over flow, at least that's what I tell myself when I'm looking at the goodies in the reduced sections.

Diets don’t work. Now Slim after 20 years of being fat.
Chucked my bathroom scales out & eat what I want. Gone from size 18 to 10.

Intermittent fasting really helps me.

Currently doing 16:8 so only eat during 8 hours of the day.

I'm not sure if it's the actual fasting that's helping, or the times I'm cutting out - my worst 2 times of the day for eating habits are morning and bedtime. In the morning I'm so rushed I end up eating cereal or toast for breakfast (no time for preparing something healthier) and at bedtime I would reward myself for getting the kids to bed with chocolate or relax with wine, or eat some comfort toast. When I'm only eating between 10 and 6, I'm cutting these times of temptation out so I'm less likely to make bad choices if that makes sense.

Bobbi73 · 27/02/2021 00:43

Keep a food diary for 2-3 weeks. Write absolutely everything down preferably in an app that has nutrition info. It's a really good way to see whats going on.

PADH · 27/02/2021 00:46

I also weigh myself everyday to hold myself accountable... back when I did the likes of Wright watchers and slimming World, if I knew my weigh in day was 6 days away I would tell myself I could eat a lot more than I should, with the logic that I had time to make up for it before I hit the scales again.

I also drink a lot more water, and anytime I'm craving anything drink a glass of water first - if I still want it afterwards, I allowed myself to have it.

Me and DH both got fitbuts and compete with our step counts. I do Joe wicks pe with the kids.

My biggest difference probably was tracking what I eat. I was surprised at how many calories I was actually eating. I also view calories like money - if I'm spending big amounts of calories of something, it has to be worth it and I have to either save up for it or pay it back. It stops me mindlessly snacking and wasting calories on food I'm not actually enjoying.

Everyone knows it's basically eating less, moving more but I think its something very personal in finding how to make that work for you, and finding the right tricks to make it realistic and sustainable for you.

smellyolddog · 27/02/2021 01:13

Don't call it a diet 👍

kittensmittens1 · 27/02/2021 01:41

'Diets don't work'

There's a shit tonne of research on it, so stop wasting your time and making yourself miserable in the process.

Look into intuitive eating and chatting for your mindset around food.

womaninatightspot · 27/02/2021 02:01

Go to bed early. Snacking/ wine drinking in the evening is the diet killer.

I think that's a bit harsh. I have no idea where that particular poster lives but where I live, although I have a choice of three decent sized supermarkets, due to Brexit their shelves are half bare. There is a good Asian supermarket about 30 miles away but obviously we can't currently go there and even in normal times it's not exactly convenient. And it's hard to find online shops that deliver to my address. Since Brexit even Amazon are having second thoughts.

Maybe that poster lives somewhere with similar limitations on what is available.

OhioOhioOhio · 27/02/2021 07:19

Don't weigh yourself

Dayafterday · 27/02/2021 07:34

Go to bed hungry.

I had something to eat at 10pm every night for years eg piece of toast and now I’ve cut it out, I am starving at bedtime but have got used to it and it has helped my digestion too.

Iwouldbecomplex · 27/02/2021 07:52

After a 15 years of constant yo-yo dieting what finally worked for me was skipping breakfast. I eat at 12, have an afternoon snack and then my dinner at 5.30ish. I track everything and don't eat more than 1200 cals a day during the week. Weekends I don't track and I have whatever I fancy (whilst still sticking to the skip breakfast routine). Skipping breakfast massively controls my appetite. Average day I have avo smash, fried egg, 2 bacon and cherry tomatoes on a slice of toast for lunch with lots of milky tea (sugar in the first cup only), a small KitKat and more tea in the afternoon then something like scrambled eggs on toast or homemade beef stew plus another KitKat for tea. Always a takeaway at weekends.

3 stone off in a year and it's not come back. I have phases of exercising and phases of couch potato and if I eat like this it still comes off regardless of how lazy I am.

Thinkivepulledsommat · 27/02/2021 08:00

@Damfino

Calorie deficit ensuring that you track every single thing that you eat.
But are you really going to do that every single day for the rest of your life? That seems like an unhealthy and miserable way to live to me.
Sunshineandflipflops · 27/02/2021 08:11

@calamityjam

Again calorie deficit for me. I stick to my calories every day and allows me to eat the odd chocolate bar or takeaway. No banned foods at all. I eat lots of chicken and turkey and tuna. Never drink full sugar pop I only drink water and the occasional sugar free pop. I started 18th December and I'm down a full dress size or more. I don't weigh myself but try on clothes I used to fit in.
This for me too. Using my fitness pal to track calories and no alcohol since late December and I have gone down a dress size. No idea about weight as scales ares the devils work to me but fitting into my 12’s comfortably is enough for me. If I am overweight at that then so be it. Oh, and running. Not so much for weight loss but for positive mind set which makes me less likely to eat crap. My appetite is always non existent after a run too.

You know what. I wasn't even asking you. The poster I asked answered normally obviously understanding that I was just curious because it isn't easy. Meanwhile you decided to give me a lesson in shopping over a coconut block. Take your lesson and shove it. Honestly. I don't even want that fucking coconut block. 🤷🏻 I simply asked how they do it because it is difficult to use only single ingredient stuff and out coconut milk as an example.
