I am starting induction tomorrow.... 3 stone of baby weight wobble to get rid of.

Furball · 22/10/2007 06:48

I'll join you - but I'm doing GI and only have 2 stone to get rid of.

BitTiredNow · 22/10/2007 19:42

cool! Thanks Furball..... good luck!

just as well not doing atkins - went to town for lunch and the best thing for me on the menu was jacket potato and beans. have now got a smaller dinner plate and my evening meal was nearly as small as ds' who is 6!

How did you get on?

BitTiredNow · 22/10/2007 22:01

hey there - day 1, so far so good, feel a bit odd to be so full of protein, but hoping the weight will drop off. How's the GI going?

BitTiredNow · 22/10/2007 22:02

Sorry, I meant to ask - I was trawling for Induction recipes and saw your name in one of the threads - have you done Atkins before? What did you like/not like? I always swore i wouldn't do it, but keep meeting friends who have lost and kept off shed loads of weight on it, and I am desperate!

OP posts:
Furball · 23/10/2007 06:58

I have done it before - hence now trying GI - which is very similar but a few good carbs are allowed. It is hard especially the first few weeks. I found the thought of bacon and eggs for brekfast most enticing but reality was after a few days - bleurgh. Good luck with it. If you search t'internet for atkins or low carbs there are loads of websites to help you along. I also had the book and started doing fancy recipes of stuff I don't really like, where as I should of just stuck with normal food minus the carbs.

BitTiredNow · 23/10/2007 21:49

Hi there, how's it going? I feel good today, but can see what you mean about bacon and eggs forever....!

Furball · 24/10/2007 05:27

I'm doing really well actually. Had a small bowl of brown pasta (about as much as ds who is 6) and loads of homemade sauce which had nothing offensive diet wise.

My main problem is portion size, I can eat and eat and eat and not fill up. But I've upped the ante on drinking to try and combat it and so far I've not been hungry.

I think the way to go is meal plan, then you're not scrabbling around the cupboards finding allsorts you shouldn't. Today I'm doing a big stew in the slow cooker and I can do mash for DH and DS. Hopefully They'll be enough for me to freeze for another time.

Are you eating the same as your family?

BitTiredNow · 24/10/2007 07:27

good morning!!! Gosh, you're an early bird! Well done. I know what you mean about portion size - I can too, and slimming world worked once for that reason, but I couldn't face any more diet yoghurts this time. I agree with you about the meal plan. I am trying to eat with the family, but just leave the carbs - so the boys had a selection of rolls for lunch yesterday and I just had the fillings. Todya we're haveing cottage pie, so I shall make the sacue and then add the mash to theirs later - I love the fact it is going off quickly!! 2 lbs already - the most I've lost for ages.....! Have a great day.

Furball · 24/10/2007 07:32

I suffer from insomnia!

great loss - I've lost 2 lbs too, it's fabbo isn't it,but have promised myself not to weigh everyday.

lovecat · 24/10/2007 20:34

Do you have room for another?

I got told today I need to lose 2.5 stone sharpish for an operation, and Atkins was the only thing that ever worked for me, pre-dd...

I've tried and tried since she was born to get back on the wagon but something (usually a plate of roast potatoes) pulls me off each time - now it's serious - but I really could use some support!

BTN - have you tried mashed swede as a lowcarb potato substitute? You have to keep it in the pan over a low light while you mash it, otherwise it's too watery, but it's great with butter and pepper. Cauliflower is also surprisingly good as a mash substitute (see, I can talk the talk, but I need a kick up the @rse to go and do it!)

Furball - how do you find GI? I looked at the book but it seemed so complicated (mind you, I was in post-baby mindfog at the time) that I decided not to bother.

Well done on your losses... I just hope I can stick to it this time around!

sparkybabe · 24/10/2007 20:36

i did atkins for a week once and craved an apple sooo bad - lost weight tho

tori32 · 24/10/2007 20:52

lovecat I would gladly join you if I wasn't 19wks pg!!LOL

So you are probably thinking WTF are you doing on this thread.
A. Giving some moral support and handy hints that work.

3 days after my dd was born I was 14st 10lbs, having been 15st 8lbs just before delivery. From a starting weight of 11st 3lbs. So gained 4.5 st roughly. She is 21 mths and in June when I fell pg I was down to 10st 10lbs!

I did Atkins but always fell of the diet craving carbs so I modified it to accommodate the cravings.

  1. Allow your self one piece of toast at breakfast but no carbs rest of day.
  2. Allow yourself a once a week treat- for me that was a roast potato and 1/2 a yorkshire pud every Sunday. 3.This could be a once weekly bacon sandwich etc, what ever your desperate weakness. You can also choose something different every week.
  3. I always ate a full packet of tesco finest sandwich meat for lunch, plus a couple oz of cheese, carrot sticks and full fat dips and tomatoes even though they were banned. Just no carbs.
  4. Walk everywhere you can and do it quickly.
  5. If you need a snack try Mathesons chicken bits as they are all protein.
  6. Add extra green veg to all meals to help prevent hunger.
  7. Drink a pint of water before snacking.

GOOD LUCK!LOL

Furball · 24/10/2007 20:53

Gi seems fine and not complicated. I just watch the sort of carbs I am eating such as brown rice and pasta, grainy bread and only new potatoes which I've not had yet etc.

It to me is far more versatile a lifestyle than atkins where you can't have a slice of bread with your bacon butty!

mazzystar · 24/10/2007 21:01

hi there, can i join in?

i've been on the india knight atkins-for-wimps diet for about 3 months and have lost 28lbs and several inches, without undue pain or suffering.

i've been wavering of late - i found some maltesers in a cupboard today - and ate the lot- but have at least another stone and a half to go and would love some company to help strengthen my resolve.

there is anther quite established low carbers thread around here somewhere but i can't seem to find it.

BitTiredNow · 24/10/2007 21:29

Welcome welcome welcome Tori, thanks so much for your tips and support, I shall print them off. Yaaayyyy FB!! Go Girl. OK I'll be sensible too and not weigh every day. Lovecat - have you looked at Tesco diets.com? They have a low Gi diet and its very user friendly. For a small cost per week you can get meal plans and a shopping list and change the meals if you don't like the ingredients - I am doing the low carb one with them, as it seems so close to Atkins. I am going to try the swede thing - someone else told me that ribbons of courgette are a great pasta substitute. Hi Mazzy - I haven't heard of India's diet - is it low carb too? Well done for your first 2 stone - that's an incredible achievement. I have just got back from a girly night out and am amazed how much I enjoyed myself despite being on the double wagon of no crisps etc and no wine - but am a bit twitchy from all the diet pepsi....!

tori32 · 24/10/2007 21:41

BTN forgot to mention you can still have spag bol, just substitue cauli, broccoli or ratatouille for pasta. Same with curry.

tori32 · 24/10/2007 21:42

PPS I love alcohol but went onto vodka lime and soda as it tastes nice and has very few calories.

BitTiredNow · 24/10/2007 21:44

Tori, am loving all this - can you also do bacardi and diet coke? Or gin and slimline tonic?

OP posts:
tori32 · 24/10/2007 21:59

The rule I used was any white spirit is fine with lime cordial and soda or mineral water. I tried to steer clear of coke due to lots of sugar replacements in the diet variety which fool the body that it is getting sugar and makes you crave carbs more. I allowed myself 1 glass of wine on an important night out or whatever I really wanted to drink as a treat.

tori32 · 24/10/2007 22:00

sorry BTN and tonic fine too!

BitTiredNow · 24/10/2007 22:02

ANY white spirit? Turps? (sorry - I'm in a very silly mood.... I blame the diet coke) Thanks thanks thanks....

OP posts:
mazzystar · 24/10/2007 22:06

thanks for the welcome! have realised its more like 32lbs! am so pleased, it really seems to be a good way of eating for me. am missing fruit, but finding the rest quite easy to go without.

not the expert but i think rum is quite sugary but vodka and gin are virtually carb-free

courgette or butternut squash slicely into strips and steamed is another ace pasta substitute

india knight's book is quite easy and motivating, also a website, i think its pigtotwig.co.uk!

BitTiredNow · 24/10/2007 22:09

Thanks for the advice, mazzy, I shall go and buy some slim line stuff tomorrow (and soda water and lime). So what is the difference between India and Atkins?

OP posts:
lovecat · 25/10/2007 09:29

Thanks for the welcome!

Courgette is a good pasta substitute but I would fry it rather than steam as you have to watch it like a hawk or it falls to mush.

Tori - wow, great weight loss - and congrats on the pg! - and ta for all the tips. I can't just stop at 1 roast potato so if I went along your route, I'd have to find something else for my treat, but great idea.

So far this morning I've had scrambled egg and a pint of water. Am about to go walk vigorously around Hobbycraft looking for halloween stuff for dd...

All clear spirit is virtually carb-free (probably does include turps!) and dry white wine is very low in carbs (about 2 a glass?). Not for induction, but later on, low-carb lagers are Micholob Ultra, Holsten Pils and Miller Light (between 2-3 carbs a bottle) and I have a great recipe for low-carb kahlua, I'll see if I can dig it out!
