How much weight to lose a dress size for shorter people?

Hi,

I was googling how much weight you generally need to lose to drop down a size. Seems to be 10 - 15 pounds.

I'm 5 foot 2 and was guessing (hoping!) that would mean I would be towards the smaller end of the range - so 10 pounds.

I was wondering if anyone round my height had dropped a dress size or two and how much weight they had lost.

(I have just bought a coat that's a bit small as an incentive to lose weight and don't know whether I am being overly ambitious).

(Also I know this is likely a really daft thing to do but the coat was selling out of the larger sizes and I panickedGrin).

Thank you!

I’d always thought it was the other way round - taller people need to lose less to drop a dress size, because they’ve got more height to spread any extra weight over. But I’m 5 foot 3, so I’m hoping you’re right!

fallfallfall · 27/10/2020 15:05

Totally depends where you carry your weight.

GinnieHempstock · 27/10/2020 15:09

I’m 5’2” and have lost 26lbs. I’ve gone from size 14 feeling tight to being a comfortable size 12, so I think it was more like 20lbs to properly drop a dress size for me.

swearymad · 27/10/2020 15:30

@ShellsAndSunrises Ah - that makes sense. I was thinking that as I have less height, I don't have to put on much weight to go up a size.

@fallfallfall I'm a text book apple.

@GinnieHempstock Well done!

Sounds like I was being too hopeful!

Would it depend on the sizes too? I know that 10lb is enough to get me from a 10 to an 8, but is the difference going to be the same between each size?

Definitely depends on where your weight is too, I have very narrow shoulders and small boobs so it’s easier to fit a smaller size anyway.

fallfallfall · 27/10/2020 15:38

Yes I didn’t want to be too harsh, I’m 5’3”, and it was a good 40 for me. I tend to carry a lot of weight on my back, it took a lot of work to loose enough to make clothes fit better.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 27/10/2020 15:41

I went from 13st 6 to 11st 2 and only dropped one dress size. I did feel so much better for it though.

swearymad · 27/10/2020 17:24

Gosh. I feel a bit deflated now (not literally - that would be good!).
I was hoping to get from size 20 to size 16 in a stone and a half or so.

I'm 13 stone with big boobs and tummy.

I think I might return the jacket as it's a winter one and I might not fit it until spring!

Thanks for your replies - that's been a really useful reality check.

I'm 5'2 and recently dropped a dress size I lost 1 stone 5lb and like you am apple shaped

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/10/2020 08:12

If you really love the coat and you want to use it as a motivator to slim down a bit then plan to wear the crap out of it all of next winter.

A 1lb loss per week (doable and slow and steady) is 4st over a year.

ChaToilLeam · 28/10/2020 08:12

I lost 55lbs and went from a very snug 18 to a comfortable 14. Sometimes can even slide into a 12. I’m 4’11 and hourglassy.

CareerFuckerUpper · 28/10/2020 08:14

Im an apple and a size 10-12 but I'm muscular. To get to an 8-10 I think I'd have to lose about 10lb, based on previous experience

Threeweirdsisters · 28/10/2020 08:15

I’m around 5’3 and recently lost about 20 pounds - went from 14/16 to 10/12, so a couple of sizes in a way but mostly just from a 14 to 12 (but have had to replace coats, trousers, skirts, most dresses as just too baggy!). Some tops still fit in a looser way. It’s been expensive!

Hollyhead · 28/10/2020 08:15

I think it gets less the smaller the size - I’m a 10/12 but look better as an 8/10, need to loose 7-10lb to get there. To be a 6/8 after that (not desirable) would only be another 7lb or so. Don’t lose hope at the start! :)

NemoRocksMyWorld · 29/10/2020 07:47

I'm 5ft 2. Started at 11 stone and my 14s were getting tight. I've lost 34lbs and am now 8-10. But getting from the 14 to the 12 was a bigger loss than getting from the 12 to the 10, if you see what I mean.

HotDiggidy2017 · 29/10/2020 07:57

Hmm I’m 5’4 and went from the weight my body seems to choose naturally - 64kg (size 10) to 57kg a couple of times in the last 3 years due to a major surgery and a long distance hike. Definitely only dropped to a size 8 each time.

Love being that skinny but it seems to intensify my body obsession, when I’m at 64kg I don’t think much about my body as it’s just who I am but when skinner I get obsessed 😣😣

fishonabicycle · 29/10/2020 10:43

Take it back. It's a rubbish idea to buy stuff to slim into. Lose the weight then treat yourself to something you like.

wowfudge · 30/10/2020 10:03

I'm 5' 4" and have lost over 10kg this year. I've been weight training and following the gym's eating plan so I've lost weight - body fat - and built muscle. I've gone from pretty much a size 18, I was in denial, to a size 12-14 depending on the fit and sizing. So around half a stone per dress size. I fit in clothes I was wearing when I weighed at least half a stone less than I do now several years ago, but hadn't been building muscle, just doing cardio in the gym. HTH.

I've just taken my body measurements this morning and overall I've lost inches - 4 off my waist alone.

wowfudge · 30/10/2020 10:05

I agree - treating yourself to smaller clothes is really rewarding and better for you physically than eating cake and chocolate.

GlamourSpider · 06/11/2020 23:29

I'm 5ft and weight has varied over the years, always around a stone per dress size for me.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 06/11/2020 23:33

I’ve lost 24lbs this year, but only one dress size (14 to a 12). I agree with an above poster - it totally depends where you carry your weight. For me, I have big boobs, small waist, and yet my hips will be wide till the day I die, so I’m not sure I’ll ever be a size 10!

RustyBear · 06/11/2020 23:45

I'm 5'2" and lost 32lbs and dropped from 14 being a bit tight to a 10 being a bit loose.
