Why We Eat (Too Much)

Has anyone come across this book? It's written by Dr Andrew Jenkinson, who is a bariatric surgeon in London. Basically, it's about how to lose weight by lowering your body's natural set weight point. This may take a long time but it's sustainable and doesn't fuck your metabolism.

The book goes into a lot of detail about the causes of obesity, because he says it's important to understand why people are getting fat in the Western world. It pretty much comes down to eating too much omega-6 fat and sugar. The overall volume of food people eat doesn't matter.

I'm trying to work out how you would cut that out practically and I wondered if anyone had tried it. It sounds like going lower carb but not low carb as in low carb diets. He suggests eating low-carb breakfasts and throwing out bread (and anything else baked). I eat toast for breakfast most days and sandwiches for lunch. I'm trying to work out practical alternatives that I actually like.

Porridge
Full fat unsweetened yoghurt
Bacon and eggs
Omelettes
Soup
Oatcakes and cheese
Salads

Other rules include no takeaways or fast food or crisps etc, and no snacks, mainly because most snack food is carb-based with vegetable oil in it.

Thanks @Tinkling! I’ll give it a go. Beef rendang is one of DH’s favourite curries.

Totally agree about the vitamin D levels for so many. And for some it can be hard to get the levels up. Might get mine tested actually.

HighlandCowbag · 25/04/2021 14:38

Vit D is a bugger, my dm is really deficient and struggles massively to keep her levels up, her GP took her vit d supplements off her prescription a few years ago in a cost cutting thing and she was buggered after 6 weeks as she couldn't buy that strength otc.

I really want to try some new recipes, am so bored of the same stuff on rotation. I am a good cook to be fair, but fell out of the habit of cooking properly over lockdown. Once uni finished for this year (in about a month) I'm going to dig my recipe books out and introduce some new stuff.

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 15:00

Welcome @Benvolio, nice to have you join us!

Thanks @Tinkling, that beef recipe looks delicious! I was looking for another dish to do in my slow cooker, so will make it using your method.

I'm having a bit of a lazy afternoon after eating too much for Sunday lunch. I was good and took mainly vegetables, but far too many of them and am properly stuffed now!

samthebordercollie · 25/04/2021 15:16

@Tiredandbored am very jealous of your vegetables. I'm on a no fibre diet for a few days due to colonoscopy on Tuesday so strictly nothing but white rice, pasta, ham, cheese, fish and eggs. Tomorrow nothing. It is very boring.
I take a vitamin D supplement every day in the form of a mouth spray - I think it is one of the best ways to absorb it.

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 16:19

Oh no, that's really rubbish for you @samthebordercollie! I hope Tuesday goes well for you though.

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 16:20

Or as well as a colonoscopy can ever go I suppose... 😫

HighlandCowbag · 25/04/2021 16:23

I've got a smear tomorrow morning, not as bad as a colonoscopy but still a guaranteed way to spoil your day.

I can't wait for my Sunday roast, I didn't do breakfast in the end so haven't had anything other than 2 12.5g pieces of cheese.

Love51 · 25/04/2021 16:51

@Peridot1 lentil shepherds pie with sweet potato mash sounds lush. Where is the recipe from?

samthebordercollie · 25/04/2021 17:04

Thanks Tired the worst is tomorrow with the litres of laxative I'll have to drink. I'm determined to stick to the diet as I don't want to be sent home and told to come back because my insides aren't as clean as they should be (apologies for anyone eating tea)

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 17:13

My insides definitely aren't as clean as they could be. I always find I get a bit bunged up when I start a diet. I know that technically this is not a diet, but clearly my bowels haven't received that message. Also sorry to anyone eating their tea...

Benvolio · 25/04/2021 17:30

Thanks for the lovely welcomeSmile
I think Ive got a Daniel Lieberman on kindle, which I'll dig out again, now I'm all enthused!

Massive spring clean blitz on my filthy little house today, so I've just had leftovers (roast carrot and swede and a bit of steak) so far. Looking forward adapting some recipes from my dozens of books. Am living alone for the time being, so I can please myself. No excuses then!

Tinkling · 25/04/2021 17:37

Vitamin D is fat soluble so you should take it in an oil capsule form and with food. I need to call and get the results of my last set of bloods but I keep putting it off because i really can’t be bothered.

The beef rendang is really lovely. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! I love it with sautéed pak choi and rice.

We’ve had family over this afternoon so I had two mozzarella dippers with sweet chilli / bbq sauce but actually the processed nastiness of it wasn’t pleasant. I did have a small kinder bar and a Daim as well though. Sausage and mash tonight - this is the last of my sausages and I don’t make a habit of eating them as they’re so heavily processed but it seems Sunday has inadvertently become my ‘cheat’ day (but I have had family over the last two weekends in the garden so that’s probably why).

I hope it goes ok @samthebordercollie Flowers

CornedBeef451 · 25/04/2021 21:10

I only started last weekend but now it's a full week with no sugar and I've been surprisingly ok. No cravings and no snacking so, so far, it's magical.

I think I usually just stuff my face automatically because I'm bored or have an emotion, any emotion, so I'm surprised this week has gone so well.

I think I need to be more organised as I've had some slightly odd meals this week but for the first time we actually ate ALL the veg I ordered on the Tesco delivery (apart from a hidden butternut squash).

Is anyone doing the mindful eating part? I think that's the bit I need to focus on this week as I can't really tell when I've eaten enough but not too much.

Benvolio · 25/04/2021 21:14

Part of my spring clean involved an audit of the kitchen cupboards, and I found 2 massive packs of sugar (tbf I didn't know they were there, because I don't add it to anything) and a bottle and a half of walnut oil from my red cabbage and walnut coleslaw phase. So I put them in the bin. Then I got them out again with the brainwave of making some lovely free bath scrub stuff for exfoliating. I'll fill you all in if it's a success.

Benvolio · 25/04/2021 21:16

Good luck to those with uncomfortable medical things this week. Must book dentist.

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 21:17

Am loving the fact that you are repurposing your sugar and oil as a body scrub!! Wonder if I can do the same with my extra Snickers bars... 🤔😆

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 21:19

@CornedBeef451, I haven't been doing the mindful eating as yet, but really need to think about it. I am guilty of boredom eating as well and sometimes I eat just because that's what I do at that particular time of the day whether I'm hungry or not. I need to be more aware of what my body is telling me and only eat when I'm actually genuinely hungry.

CornedBeef451 · 25/04/2021 21:27

@Tiredandbored if I go to get a snack I shriek "no snackseees" in the style of Gollum and retreat from the kitchen.

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 21:36

Too funny! Please, please, please tell me you do that even when the window is open and your next door neighbour is in the garden?????

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 21:48

Ok, in the interests of open and transparent accountability, it's confession time - the good, the bad and the ugly!

For me, good today was I did really well on my fruit and veg portion count (3f and 5v), I didn't have any carb-heavy foods (other than the veg) and I hit my protein target.

The bad - ate supper when I didn't really need it as wasn't hungry, just bored. And I definitely ate more than I needed at lunchtime. Need to eat more mindfully.

The ugly - the departure lounge is still being somewhat sluggish and is becoming a little crowded (I know, I know, that's a lot uglier than you expected!) though I am very optimistic I will lose about another 5lb once I recover my regularity again Grin

Peridot1 · 25/04/2021 22:02
@Peridot1 lentil shepherds pie with sweet potato mash sounds lush. Where is the recipe from?
I’ll ask DH! I think he found it online somewhere. Mind you he fiddles with recipes so they dont always end up as they should! Grin

CornedBeef451 · 25/04/2021 22:14

@Tiredandbored I don't think the neighbours have heard me yet but DH clearly thinks I'm in the grip of some sort of sugar deprivation psychosis!

Benvolio · 25/04/2021 22:46

Not so much Tiredandbored, but Tiredandbound. Sorry! Hope you have movement tomorrow

Tiredandbored · 25/04/2021 22:51

Haha @Benvolio, very good!! 😂😂😂😂

Tinkling · 26/04/2021 07:18

I’ve suffered from slow departure for a while due to medical issues but eating like this seems to have sorted me back out again. Perhaps up the water intake?

I ended up having 3 biscuits last night. I was hungry and I knew I had them. Anyway that was the end of them, I shan’t be buying any more to just have lying around.

Today I fancy scrambled eggs for breakfast, will probably have them alone or maybe with bacon.

Lunch is leftover sausage and mash.

Dinner is salmon, new potatoes and veg.

I am still snacking - either a yoghurt, fruit and / or a glass of milk. I don’t tend to snack in the morning but mid afternoon around 4-4:30 I do get hungry and we don’t have dinner until gone 6.

I’m not really eating mindfully but I know I need to get back to that. I used to do it and it does help you enjoy your food and not eat too much. But to be honest I have found I haven’t really overeaten anyway - maybe the beef rendang because it is soooo good.
