Lost 2 stone but haven't changed dress size

Just a bit of a rant really!
I’ve recently lost 2 stone, down from 12 stone to 10 stone. I am 5’8”.
When I was 12 stone I was a large size 12. Now that I’m 10 stone I am still a size 12. I’m just feeling disheartened because although I’ve lost two stone I haven’t changed dress sizes 🙁.
I’ve got some really nice size 10 clothes in my wardrobe. I know I can fit in to them at 9 stone but .... I just feel like 3 stone is a lot to lose to only go down one dress size 🙁.
It seems like other people only need to lose half a stone to go down a dress size! Anyone else the same as me?

Hmm that is odd. I would have thought losing that much would definitely involve moving down at least a dress size. Could it be that your large 12 was actually a 14? My starting weight was 14 and a half stone. I had a couple of pairs of quite stretchy new look jeans that I lived in and they were a size 12. However, nothing that was actually a real 12 fitted, like skirts, non-stretchy trousers etc, but I just avoided them rather than confront the problem. So in real life, I was a size 16 although I kidded myself I was a 12. I have currently lost 16 lb and reckon I’m a large 14 now and that after another 16 lb loss, I might then be getting close to a real size 12.

Well done on your weight loss by the way! I bet you look great. 2 st is my next goal so it’s inspiring to read about success stories.

dungbeetles · 26/05/2020 14:17

Thanks @Shedtheload , well done on your weight loss too! It's been a long process for me. Whilst I have lost two stone it has taken me 7 months!!
I think you're probably right maybe I was a 14 when I started! Probably just kidding myself that I was a 'large'12 Grin.
I'm not looking forward to losing the next stone, it just gets harder the more you try to lose and I love food way too much!

Hi op - not quite as much as you but I lost 1.5 stone and am still pretty much the same clothes size. If I’m honest I think I was telling myself I was a size 12 but they were definitely on the tighter side and there are many clothes I didn’t buy myself as I’d have had to go up a size.

Have you tried different items to see if you vary eg jeans versus dresses? Now I’m a bit smaller I find some of my 12s are looser and in some clothes I need a 10, but I’m still very much a size 12 in jeans etc.

dungbeetles · 26/05/2020 14:33

Thanks @Cloudyapples
You're definitely right, I need to try some different things on I think. Just a bit difficult with the covid situation at the moment! I haven't ordered any clothes in such a long time.

I'm the same - lost a stone and a half last year and stayed a size 14. I need to be drop at least 2.5-3 stone to change my dress size.
Maybe it's a tall person thing?

11stoneTess · 26/05/2020 15:25

I'm shorter than you, 5'4.5 and i'm finding the same. I was a 16-18 and 20lbs later, i'm still a 16. Clothes are a mere smidge looser. I take measurements though, and its coming off places that I would consider 'icing on the cake' places. Upper back, upper arms, lower legs, my poor tiny bum, and likely elbows and earlobes too. All the while my many bellies remain almost fully in tact. And its all the bellies that mean smaller clothes dont fit.

Bodies are weird.

I was also upset about this the other day because I actually look fatter after weightloss because the change in my proportions.

nevergoingoutagain · 26/05/2020 15:30

Alongside whatever you're doing to lose weight you could try some intermittent destiny. Recommend the book delay don't deny by Gin Stephens.

I have done it and lost 1 stone (need to lose more) but the fasting helps burn fat which changes your body shape. I lost a whole size on my waist in only 1 stone.

I started with 16.8 then went to 18.6 and now occasionally do longer fasts. Some people do crazy long fasts but I like to eat!

I haven't lost any more weight because I've been eating crap but not put it on either!

nevergoingoutagain · 26/05/2020 15:31

Intermittent fasting not destiny obviously!

Im 5 foot 10 lost six stone in the past when i was younger. It took me half a stone to go from size 16 to 14 then 2 and a half stone to go to size 12!! 1 stone to go to ten then half stone to drop to a 8.. By the stage i was unhealthy thin so i think size 12 is probably were taller girls would normally sit? Also depends on your body shape im lucky to be a hour glass

YorkshireTeaIsTheBest · 19/08/2020 16:42

I was 13 stone and a 14 /16. Now I'm down to 12 stone I'm a 14.
Don't forget different shops have different sizes too and elastic can stretch and is forgiving.

GreyishDays · 19/08/2020 16:43

Have you any jeans that used to fit? They’re quite a good benchmark.

CodenameVillanelle · 19/08/2020 16:44

When I was 4 stone lighter than I am now I was a small 14. At my heaviest which was a stone heavier than I am now I was a large 16. It's annoying but doesn't really mean much does it?

WindsorBlues · 19/08/2020 16:53

I was the opposite for my wedding I went from a size 14 to a six but stayed the same weight I went hard at the gym so assume it was muscle tone even though I didn't look muscley.

Anyway try notbtobget caught up in the numbers. Focus more on how you feel.

OneTooManyBathtimes · 19/08/2020 17:01

I'm 5 foot 8 and 17 stone 12lbs at the moment. Size 20/22 but do for in some size 18 tops etc. I'd have to lose 2 stone to go down a size, and then another 2.5 atojw to maybe fit in size 16 tops. I've got broad shoulders and big boobs, and a wide ribcage and hips. It's upsetting knowing I don't actually ever be a size 8 or 10 again without being seriously thin, but better than trying and suddenly being ill

Subwaysalad · 19/08/2020 17:31

Where do you shop as most shops have different sizing?
I’m 5ft 7.5. At 12 stone I was a 14.
When I lost a stone at 11 stone I was a 12
I’m 10 stone now and I’m a size 10 in everything

Nandocushion · 19/08/2020 17:36

Same height here OP and when I lost 1.5 stone I was the same size. It's the curse of being taller - when posters on here report losing a stone and going down one or two dress sizes, they are usually 5'2" or so.

Wallywobbles · 19/08/2020 17:46

In my case it kind of works down my body - so face, then neck, then shoulders,!arms, boobs etc. So none of those areas have much effect on dress sizes.

So maybe that next stone will be really effective.

Candyflosscookie · 21/08/2020 16:07

"Large 12" = you were a size 14 but just didn't want to/couldn't admit it.
You probably have dropped roughly a size (I'm the same height as you OP) it's just you chose to wear clothes that were stretchy enough to let you believe your self image of a 12.

Mrsemcgregor · 21/08/2020 16:16

I’ve lost a stone in the last 2 months from 11.5 to 10.5 which is the lightest I’ve been in 5 years. (5’8” for reference)

Weirdly though last time I was 10.5 I wore a size 10 and even, very memorably, a size 8 dress! But this time I’m still squeezing into my 12s, even a 14 pair of jeans (new look) are fitting me round the waist but are super tight around the legs?!
