Replacing carbs with grated carrot

Charlieandthechocolatecake · 15/05/2020 20:08

Has anybody tried this? For example, replacing the pasta in Bolognese with carrots. Replacing the rice in chicken and rice with carrots etc. Meat recipes stay the same. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now and I love it. I'm not a veg person at all but I can't get enough of grated carrots. I feel like I'm doing something wrong because it seems to be going so well. I haven't weighed myself but I know I've lost a few pounds.
I can't help but feel like I've found 'the way' even if it's just for me.
Am I wrong? I feel like I can keep this up for a lifetime if necessary. Carbs are my weakness but I don't miss them. I still have the odd egg and bacon sandwich but I KNOW I'm losing weight.
I don't know what I want from this...maybe some hope or encouragement? Or maybe somebody to tell me it's never going to work?

Small changes all add up to a big difference.

sittingonacornflake · 15/05/2020 20:17

If you like it keep going!id never ever be able to do it and sort of envy you.

doughnutmuffin · 15/05/2020 20:31

I've used the 'cauliflower rice' as a substitute for rice before. It was frozen and just needed microwaved for a few minutes. I had it with stir fries etc and didn't really notice the difference, good when trying to eat more vegetables

PlanDeRaccordement · 15/05/2020 20:33

You do know that vegetables are literally carbs? You are replacing carbs with carbs.

Wilmalovescake · 15/05/2020 20:34

Yep!
Also grated cauliflower, cabbage and courgette.

Bertucci · 15/05/2020 20:36

Carrots are carby though.

icecreamscoops · 15/05/2020 20:38

Try courgette made into courgetti and fried in butter much nicer and less carby than carrots

overnightangel · 15/05/2020 20:38

“You do know that vegetables are literally carbs? You are replacing carbs with carbs.

Carbs per 100g of carrots: 7g
Carbs per 100g of Rice: 28g
Carbs per 100g pasta: 25g

Well carrots are also carbs 🤷🏼‍♀️ But hey, if it works for you OP what does it matter. Carrots are infinitely lower in calories than either rice or pasta, so eating the same meals but substituting one for the other will absolutely help to create the calorie deficit needed to lose weight; ultimately that's all you need!

Inforthelonghaul · 15/05/2020 20:41

Sautéed cabbage is really good and swede makes great chips. Some veg are carby and above ground ones are usually better but low carb is not no carb. You can roast cauliflower, broccoli and celeriac is surprisingly tasty. I even have the odd roast parsnip.

ProperVexed · 15/05/2020 20:54

I might give that a go. I often replace rice or pasta with lettuce....so I'll have a bowl of lettuce with bolognaise or curry on top. I love it...but the rest of the family think it is gross. Carrot might be a bit more normal!

NoraEphronsneck · 15/05/2020 21:05

I have shredded iceberg lettuce with bolognese or curry or whatever in top. If it's chinese takeaway I push the boat out and have beansprouts as the base Smile

Charlieandthechocolatecake · 15/05/2020 22:04

Oh shit...I was wrong then. I assumed there were no carbs in carrots. Even so, beforehand I was eating enough white rice and pasta in one meal enough for 3 people. I still eat about 5 grated carrots per main meal so I suppose it's a lot of carbs but definitely a lot less than previously. I'll try and go down to 3 or so.

I can't eat cauliflower, swede or cabbage. I've decided I'm allergic 😁

What about sweet potatoes? I can eat them chopped and roasted...

Are you cooking the grated carrots or having them raw?

Charlieandthechocolatecake · 15/05/2020 22:12

Completely raw. They're delicious 😋

Thanks , I will try this I eat spaghetti bolognese with pasta and salad foods like lettuce and carrots anyway. So will skip the pasta.

Newuser54321 · 16/05/2020 09:01

Courgette is fantastic as a pasta substitute

Charlieandthechocolatecake · 16/05/2020 19:09

I don't know if anybody is going to come back but in regards to carrots being carbs too, will they affect your weight the same was as rice/pasta dies if you are the in proportion (same grams of carbs)?

I just can't imagine getting fat eating too many carrots!

No, but you can turn orange.

If you want to go even lower carb than carrot, courgettes, cauliflower or broccoli are great alternatives. Ignore all the people sniping that carrots are carbs Hmm I mean yes, they are on the sweeter side which means they’re carbier than green vegetables, but if this change is working for you then that’s great.

HuggyBuggy · 17/05/2020 21:34

I found grated carrot and cheese absolutely delicious and I've been eating it regularly for about ten years now! I know what you mean about liking it a lot, when I first had it I think I ate it about for about 10 meals out if 14. I am amazed at you being able to eat five carrots in one go. I can barely do two! The corners of my mouth also turn orange sometimes too.

Charlieandthechocolatecake · 18/05/2020 18:47

@PhoneLock I haven't turned orange yet but the next time I'm mistaken for Donald Trump, I'll take that as my cue to cut down Grin

@HuggyBuggy I have a big appetite, thats my main issue. I eat far too much. Before carrots I would typically eat enough pasta or rice for 3 people. I think swapping those kind of carbs for a few buckets of carrots is reasonable..for now! I was also hoping it would help to reduce my appetite somewhat. I have been in Phentermine in the past and it worked wonders but I was young and I'm worried that the side effects will do lasting damage if I go back in them. The new 'home delivery' option is tempting but so far, I've resisted
