Ok, so before I give my details I will say I know I am not massively over weight. But I have problem areas - mainly my belly and chin!

I am 5'6" and my weight is always around 10st6 or 10st5
I started exercising last year, first one class a week, then 2 classes a week. Boot camp, lots of weighted exercises etc. In the summer I completed the C25K so was also running 3 times a week. The scales never moved!! My body shape changed slightly but belly was still to big and my chin still had a friend!! I admit at this time my diet was still pretty crap!

I'm now doing 3 classes a week, and really cutting back on snacks etc barely eat chocolate, and my usual coffee and cakes are history. Yet my weight does not change!!!

We go onholiday in 2 months, I'm really putting the effort in as I want to be confident in a bikini!! I literally need to lose about 5 lbs not much!

How do I do it??????

I've gone from eating take aways, cake and chocolate most weeks and never exercising to working out a couple of times a week and eating no chocolate or crisps but no weight comes off!! 😭

calorie deficit. burn more calories than you eat. simple

HoneysuckIejasmine · 06/03/2020 19:18

You need to actually calorie count. You need to burn more calories than you consume, and you will lose weight. It really is that simple.

Try MFP for logging calories. Include literally everything that passes your lips that isn't water.

If you continue to exercise you should gain muscle, so your weight may remain static but your body will get smaller as muscle is more dense than fat. Take measurements so you can see progress even if scales are slow.

Lastly, try not to get hung up on a particular dress size. It varies between shops and batches anyway. Just get what fits.

If you’re not losing weight you’re eating too many calories. Download MyFitnessPal and track everything.

Biscusting · 06/03/2020 19:24

Tricky one, I have a personal trainer friend who always says you can’t out run a bad diet. Meaning exercise is good, but if you don’t fuel the body well then it’s not going to work.
I dint think it’s as simple as cutting out cake etc. It’s a whole lifestyle thing. What is your whole weeks worth of food like? What are your portion sizes like?

More importantly, you only want to loose five pounds? Meh, just chuck the bikini on, bet you look fab either way.

BertieDrapper · 06/03/2020 19:42

I have got MFP I tracked it for about 3 days and was always under what it said to eat to lose 1lb a week.
I burn between 250-300 calories a class.
I plan on exercising pretty much every day from now till we go on holiday.

Ok it maybe more then 5lb and I know I don't look awful but my stomach... I just hate it!! I can tell I have a good set of abs under the layer of fat that I've worked hard for and I want to be able to see them!!

Today food wise hasn't been amazing
But I had museli for breakfast
Had a tuna/cheese toastie for lunch
Friday dinners are always what ever I can do in 2 minutes so tonight was ravioli on toast 😳

No snacks in between! I know it's a bit carb heavy today I do try to not eat so much bread. But I'm already cutting out crisps and chocolate 😢

Where's you're fruit and veg though Shock

HoneysuckIejasmine · 06/03/2020 19:57

Don't worry about carbs. They aren't the devil. They won't make you fat. Low carb if you want but as long as it's a calorie deficit it doesn't matter what you eat.

Also, very few personal fitness devices are anywhere near accurate on calculating calories burned, so try not to "eat them back" as it were. Unless you're in a sports science lab, it's going to be unreliable.

You can do this OP. And eat chocolate if you want to. Just maintain a calorie deficit

I was told by my NHS dietician who worked out my BMR (basal metabolic rate) that 1500 calories daily should get me losing weight at the rate of 2lbs a week with or without exercise.
Also that most of my food should be low in saturated fat & sugar.

So far I stuck to 1500 - 1600 calories a day & ive lost over 8lbs since Feb 14th & have counted a small piece of chocolate into my calories each day.

I've been working out at the gym mainly weights 2 - 3 times a week.

Personally my plan is to try to stick to 1400 - 1500 calories now and to increase my weight training.
(Doing weights burns fat for up to 24 hours after you work out, tones up, builds muscle & gets you fit).
I've got 2st6lbs to lose now.

I think you should look online to see how to calculate your BMR and then from that work out a daily calorie count.

Yes it's boring but it really works.
Also keep an honest food diary for a few days to work out how many calories you are really eating, to be honest I think your current diet is quite high calorie & high saturated fat.

At first you may feel hungry in the evening, I did as I was used to eating a lot of food but it soon passed off as I got used to reduced calories.

BertieDrapper · 06/03/2020 20:55

Yes my fruit and veg in take is pretty non existent... Blush
I did eat broccoli yesterday Grin
I pretty much only drink tea and coffee too.. no sugars. But very little water. no alcohol.
There is room for improvement but I really struggle with a lot of foods, have always been a fussy eater. But I can pretty much say I would be between 1500-1700 calories a day.

Apparently my BMR is 1450

Don't worry about carbs. They aren't the devil. They won't make you fat.

Carbs do exactly that!

Your belly specific weight gain is usually due to excess carbs, and therefore excess insulin, and therefore your body ‘storing’ the excess energy as fat.

I was in a similar situation as you...and calorie counting doesn’t work...go keto or LCHF and you’ll see it melt away.

I only lost a stone but it was all fat that went and my body composition changed massively....no more belly (No exercise btw!) and dropped 2 dress sizes (measurements are much more impressive than weight)
Body fat went down from 31 to 22%. By losing a stone!!!

It’s sugar and carbs that are your problem.

And yes! You are eating loads of carbs still if that is your typical day.

Witchofzog · 08/03/2020 13:43

I agree with the too many carbs comment. Your dinner was carbs on carbs. Ideally eat any carbs earlier in the day if you can

delilahbucket · 08/03/2020 20:08

As well as the carbs, only drinking tea and coffee is going to cause your body to hang on to water, which causes bloating. Plus, calorie counting for three days is pointless. You shouldn't be eating less than 1200 a day, and if your BMR is 1450, you need to eat that and then burn an extra 250 a day, every single day, to lose a pound a week. If you aren't eating less than your body needs, you aren't going to lose.

BertieDrapper · 08/03/2020 21:14

I've done no carbs previously and I felt a lot better in myself. Just found it hard to stick too long term. But I have 2 months till my holiday and I plan on having as little carbs as possible!
Fridays example of my meals was not a typical day... Friday is a tough one As tend to eat lunch out with my DD and we have a rubbish dinner .. you know pizza etc

It's so tough, everyday I think "this is the day I stick to eating properly" and then my DD has a bday party to go to and I eat a danish!!! Argh
