Why am I not losing weight

I recently decided it was time to finally make changes to myself and my lifestyle as I’m fed up of being overweight! I have around 4 stone to lose in total. I have started the C25K programme, doing that 4 times a week. I repeated week 1 and am now on week 2. I’ve started walking my dog between 4-8 miles every weekend, and I’m using a calorie tracker to track everything I’m eating. I make sure I’m in a calorie deficit every day, and I drink 2L of water each day. In the last 3 weeks I haven’t lost a single KG Angry is there something I’m missing!?

@Bluntness100 it is 100% honest, trust me I have had enough of lying to myself about how much I was eating and have made huge effort to change my life so I don’t have to live like this any longer

That sounds odd.

50g of porridge is a lot though, i only have 30g.

You must be eating something that's slowing down your loss.

Trewser · 14/01/2020 10:10

Definitely don't log exercise on MFP!

Trewser · 14/01/2020 10:11

I've been eating 1400 cals since jan 2nd and ive lost nearly half a stone!!

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 14/01/2020 10:14

If you’re truly being honest about what you’re eating you should be losing weight and should see your GP.

I think your calories are too low to be sustainable op. If you have 4 stone to lose you should probably be on at least 1800.

AnuvvaMuvva · 14/01/2020 10:15

I can't lose weight unless I follow an actual eating plan that someone else has devised!

I had great success on The Scarsdale Diet (you'd like the rules and restrictions of that, I think. It's easy everyday plain food.) Get it on Amazon for 99p.

Or Weightwatchers.

Titsntats · 14/01/2020 10:15

@Dyrne i have yeah, I don’t trust the calorie amounts on the app as I see that anyone can add a food and an amount. Someone had logged a carvery as being 400 calories, being hopeful I think Grin I’ve been weighing once a week, on the same weekday in the morning, and I weigh naked so I know I can’t blame it on clothes Grin

Titsntats · 14/01/2020 10:22

@GymSloth before this my steps each day were embarrassingly low as I work in an office sat on my arse all day Blush but now they’re around 8-10k each day

I would second saying see your gp. I've been dieting since 30th Dec and have lost 6lbs, only have around a stone and a half to lose though. I have come to a stop and it is gutting. I have started 5:2 this week as it really works for me.

Shockers · 14/01/2020 10:23

I have cut my calorie intake because I can’t exercise due to an injury, and it’s made not an ounce of difference.

I’ve just spoken to the consultant physio because I want to be a lower weight for an upcoming operation, so that my recovery will be more successful; she recommended a smaller eating window every day. So, later breakfast- earlier evening meal. She also suggested that on two days out of seven, I cut my intake further to give my metabolism a shake up.

Oddly, I’m thinner, but my weight is exactly the same. For me, it’s weight that’s important because of the strain it puts on the injured joint.

Lollygaggles · 14/01/2020 10:30

Are you near to the max limit your scales will measure? This happened to me and I weighed exactly the same on them for weeks until I'd lost enough to move under that threshold. Then they dropped half a stone on one day!

Trewser · 14/01/2020 10:32

I use the barcode scanner on mfp because people put any old crap on

NoWayNoHow · 14/01/2020 10:37

How old are you, OP, if you don't mind me asking?

I also think 1,200 is far too low if you have 4 stone to lose. Work to under your TDEE for a few days and see how you get on.

Have you taken your measurements? How do your clothes feel? Muscle weighs 3 times more than the same cubic volume of fat, so you could be losing fat and gaining muscle (you're doing a lot of exercise), although I can't see that accounting for zero weight loss

Bluntness100 · 14/01/2020 10:39

Eating more clearly isn't going to be the answer. Hmm

NoWayNoHow · 14/01/2020 10:41

I also second the PPs who've suggested some kind of intermittent fasting - either 5:2 or limiting the window during the day that you eat.

I lost 1st8lbs on 5:2 only (no exercise as I have CFS/M.E.) and have also started limiting my hours of eating on non-fast days (never have anything before 10.00/10.30am, and nothing after 7.30/8.00pm)

It's proven to improve cholesterol and stop Type 2 diabetes.

BinkySodPlop · 14/01/2020 10:42

Have you tried calculating your BMR? Rather than BMI. As a short, middle-aged, largely sedentary woman, I only need 1500 calories a day to maintain my weight. If I want to lose some (3 stone would be right at the top of BMI "normal"), I need to keep to around 1000 a day (using the 500 fewer per day to drop 1lb a week).

We are not all average in height, age etc.., so starting from an average of 2000 cals a day may not be helpful for you.

GymSloth · 14/01/2020 10:44

I think booking an appointment to see your GP is the best suggestion.

At least you know that your healthy diet must be doing your body some good, even if the scales don't reflect this.

I hope they do soon though.

Dyrne · 14/01/2020 10:44

I that case I’d recommend you carry on as you are for a couple of weeks, but I’d take some measurements of your waist, hips, thighs etc. You might see a change in the measuring tape if you don’t see it on the scale immediately.

Did you have a salty meal the night before you weighed? That’s the only other thing I can think of - retaining water (or a big poo? Grin )

ChocolateRaisin · 14/01/2020 10:44

There is some absolutely awful advice on this thread. I very much doubt you are eating double of what you think, and as someone said it is more complex than just calories in and out. Please please don’t restrict further. Your daily diet looks pretty miserable to me, it doesn’t have to be so strict and restrictive.

The James Smith calculator is very good and if that has recommended 2000 cals per day I would be sticking to that. You can choose to stick to a consistent number a day or calculate it over the week have lower days during the week to allow for a bit of relaxation at the weekend. Whichever works best for you. Give that 3 weeks, if you don’t see a change then drop by 100-150 per day and give it another couple of weeks.

As you lose weight the number of calories you need per day will come down gradually, it won’t be 2000 forever.

You don’t need to starve yourself, be miserable and overly restrictive. It’s a long term life style change, it needs to be sustainable.

50g of porridge in the morning is not a lot and it’s bloody grim with water so if you prefer milk, have that. Or an unsweetened almond or coconut milk. Enjoy plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep at night. Walking is the best exercise for you at the moment.

If, after 6 weeks of the above nothing has changed, I would go and see the GP.

NoWayNoHow · 14/01/2020 10:48

Bluntness100 if the OP has 4 stone to lose, then it's highly likely that 1,150-1,200 calories will be significantly under her basal metabolic rate required to cover the basic functions (kidney, brain, heart, lung, nervouse system).

Several studies have shown that regularly eating fewer calories than needed can cause your metabolism to slow and decrease the number of calories burned by nearly 25%. It also causes muscle loss which will be counteracting the exercise she's doing.

Bigsighall · 14/01/2020 10:52

10k steps is what we should all be aiming for as a healthy lifestyle. I wouldn’t see that as exercise as part of a weight loss programme. Have you tried using weights / gym classes.

Bloomburger · 14/01/2020 10:53

That’s honestly way too low. Even 1500 is likely to be too low if you have 4st to lose. Even if you start to lose weight now, which you inevitably will as that will be a huge calorie deficit, your body will eventually get used to that many calories per day and you will need to cut calories again in order to continue losing weight. It’s not safe or sustainable.

^This.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 14/01/2020 10:54

What do you call “a car very”

Big plate of food , 8 roasties, pudding after?

Or a small plate of food with lots of veg and 2-3 roasties and no pudding

There is a huge difference Grin

If you are consistently eating less, you will lose weight. Over time.

vickibee · 14/01/2020 10:59

I am watching this with interest, I have lost 4 stone since Feb 19 and now I am 'stuck' I would like to lose another 2 stone to get mid range BMI
I am eating 1500 ish Kcal per day so I guess I am going to have to cut down even more.I am taller than average so I thought I would lose weight on 1500. Most days I do 9-10000 steps

Trewser · 14/01/2020 11:01

Someone always turns up on these threads to sayhow awful everyone's advice is Grin

50g of porridge in the morning is not a lot and it’s bloody grim with water so if you prefer milk, have that. Or an unsweetened almond or coconut milk. Enjoy plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables

I agree its depressing with water but 50g does make a huge bowl! Better off with 30g oats, semi skimmed milk, bluberries and a dollop of natural yogurt or kefir. Yum.

I'm not a trained nutritionist but I'm currently losing weight happily with 3 stone to go.

If I'd eaten 2000 cals a day I would have gained weight, even at 3.5 stone overweight, but I am 53!

Losing weight is about calories. How best to eat those calories is very individual.
