I'm sure it's different for different people. The overall expert opinion (as far as I can tell) is that the best diet is one that you find easy to keep to and that you can keep using for the rest of your life, rather than a sudden, quick fix type of diet.

Demented · 19/09/2004 19:44

nikcola, after I had my DS1 I lost two stone with just exercise and eating sensibly, cutting out the junk (chocolate, crisps etc) this time after I had my DS2 I lost a stone this way and then Hulababy very kindly emailed me some WW points and I have lost a further stone and a half with the aid of the points (although I also just do my own thing at times).

For me it's a combination of diet and exercise that takes it off. I have the points in Excel if you would like me to send them to you?

emkana · 19/09/2004 19:46

I would recommend Weight Watchers to anybody. I've been on it for a year and I haven't felt deprived. To me it's great because no food is forbidden, because when I'm told to cut out this or that I start obsessing about it, wanting to eat it even more.
WW really just helps you to eat a sensible, healthy diet.

nikcola · 19/09/2004 19:56

ok im goin to admit it i weigh 15 and a half stone before i had dd i was 10 i really need help

I lost all my weight after dd by eating sensibly and walking in to town nearly every day. However, this has not been the same since having ds 9 months ago. My SIL recommended Scarsdale, as bran said, it has probably worked because it suits me. It is low fat, low carbohydrate (but not excluded) Simple plans are provided for each meal of each day (today, melon and wholemeal toast for breakfast, roast chicken, carrots, cauliflower and tomatoes for lunch, steak and salad for dinner) there's no weighing, you just make sure that you chew your food and stop eating when you're full. They also provide vegetarian, gourmet and save-the-pennies eating plans. I have lost 7 pounds in 8 days. You stay on it for 2 weeks, then go on an easier version and go back to it if you need to lose more weight - 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. It's simple and my children can eat the same things, but they get to have the roast potatoes and roast parsnips that I don't have myself

HTH

Don't panic Nikola, losing that weight is possible. Think about your current lifestyle and what kind of diet would fit into it. There's no point in doing an extreme diet if you're not going to be able to stick to it. I'm doing WW at the moment (I have 7 stone to lose altogether), and I'm finding it ok because, like emkana says, nothing's forbidden, although I have given up chocolate completely because I can't just have a little bit. Some people absolute love Slimming World. Both are good because you can go to meetings and get support that way, I think that diets that you do on your own are much more difficult.

What sort of diet do you think you would like to do?

Forestfly · 19/09/2004 20:15

Rancid Tuna

You would be on 24 points a day until you reach 14 stone, then you would be on 22. If you like to graze on food all day then make sure that you have lots of point free food. I have chopped up carrot and celery in a container in the fridge so that I can just open the door and nibble, the way that I used to nibble on cheese.

Do your own alternative to KFC, with bread-crumbed chicken baked in the oven. Or go for the low fat version (don't they do one which is just a grilled chicken breast in a bun?). TBH I can't stand fast food, the texture is just so pulpy and oily so I much prefer fast food oriental style and I make lots of noodle soups at home.

nikcola · 19/09/2004 20:25

so how many points woul 2 slices of toast be (my favourite) with low gat flora sorry for all the questions you are being a big help

OP posts:
motherinferior · 19/09/2004 20:27

Nik, you may not get back absolutely to where you were before because you were only 17 then. But you can lose loads, honestly. I'd recommend a bit of exercise too.

bran · 19/09/2004 20:28

Medium sliced bread is 1 point per slice and Flora Light is 0.5 points for 2 teaspoons.

nikcola · 19/09/2004 20:31

im going to walk to collage evryday so thats some exercise i suppose i want to get to 12 stone then ill be happy xxx

Why not re-join WW Nikola? Usually if you go to the WW website there's a voucher to print off so that you don't have to pay the joining fee, just the meeting fee. Even if you only went for a month or 6 weeks you might find that the meetings and being weighed every week is useful.

nikcola · 19/09/2004 20:49

its to far from me bran plus i couldnt afford it every week id much rather do it at home and weigh myself every week i just weighed myself after 4 months and i not 15 something im 16 stone 4 i feel very embaressed nowxxxxxxxxxxx

Chinchilla · 19/09/2004 20:49

Nikcola - Sending you slim vibes. In my experience, the best diet is one that you see as a life plan, which helps you think differently about food. I am trying to get 3.5 stones off now, because I hit a blip 6 months ago. I joined WW, but am finding it a bit hard at the mo. Only the second week though.

Good luck. Try eating three meals a day, it doesn't matter when. Or, if you can't stop picking, write down the calories of everything you eat. They soon mount up, and you can see where you are going wrong.

nikcola · 19/09/2004 20:51

thanks cc good luck to you xxx its good to hear from people in the same situation as me

Whichever you do Nikcola, why don't you join in with the mumsnet mamas, so you get to do a weighin each week and announce your loss (not your weight!) which is great as an incentive to stick with it, without the embarassment of having to do it in public.

One diet you probably haven't looked at, but which I'm finding quite easy to do as a lifestyle adjustment style diet, as Chinchilla says, is South Beach (with a few personal twists like being stricter than it suggests Monday to Friday, and more relaxed about it at weekends so that it averages out over the week!). I'm afraid I couldn't cope with counting points for the rest of my life (like WW), or having to remember whether it was a day for this type of food, or for that type (like SW), so this one suits me. Look at things like that and decide which type of system suits your personality, and you think you could stick to.

Demented · 20/09/2004 10:31

Nikcola, I'll send you what I've got and you can have a look at it and decide whether it would be for you or not.

The walking will be a great help to you. I know you joined Mumsnet Mamas already, Yorkiegirl has taken over the spreadsheet (did you get my mail with the new address?). Please mail Yorkiegirl, give her your new starting weight and you can make a fresh start, your first couple of stones will come off amazingly quick and you'll not be able to believe how much better you are feeling! Give it a go!!!
