Never take your eye off the weighing scales for one minute

As soon as you let your guard down and don't weigh yourself for a couple of weeks (and despite trying to stay on the straight and narrow) out of nowhere half a stone appears. Every time. I don't want to be a daily or even weekly weigher but I think I might have to resign myself to it as those pesky pounds catch me unawares if I don't. Anyone else?

Totally agree. I stopped watching for a while and have put on a stone.

TemporaryPermanent · 01/07/2019 06:35

I find the standard advice to weigh in once a week or not at all completely unhelpful. it has to be every day. I can jump a kilo and a half quite easily with an indulgent couple of days.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 01/07/2019 06:40

Same here. But there is also a sense of me avoiding the scales if I've had an indulgent couple of days...I'll get back on track, I tell myself...then it all goes to shit.

BustedDreams · 01/07/2019 06:44

Yes you are so right about that! During last year I didn’t weigh for about 3 weeks, just got out of the habit. When I eventually jumped on them again ... boom 9lb gain! Nine bloody pounds. Took months to get rid off.

GhostRidersInDisguise · 01/07/2019 06:48

I remember reading somewhere that one of Liz Hurley's tricks is to weigh herself every day and on the days she is over N she diets or fasts until she is back under N.

I am losing weight currently and am going to adopt this as a regime I think.

CortisolandCaffeine · 01/07/2019 06:48

Agree. There is too much crap advice out there about not weighing yourself too much. As soon as I stop weighing myself daily, guaranteed I will put on weight.

Aebj · 01/07/2019 06:51

Don’t start taking thyroid medicine. I swear the little tiny tablets weigh at least half a kilo!!!

pistachiomousse · 01/07/2019 07:05

Glad it's not just me then - it's actually quite alarming how those numbers can just rack up so fast. I think I'll have to adopt daily weighing - otherwise I hide my head in the sand too much and assume all is ok until my zips start breaking.

Totally agree. There have been a couple of threads recently where the OP has said they will stop weighing in and go with dress size instead. I always comment that this is a bad bad idea! Not to mention if an item of clothing has a stretchy waist band it can cover multiple dress sizes Grin

pistachiomousse · 01/07/2019 08:11

The Liz Hurley approach sounds very sensible - love her or hate her, she does always look fabulous.

KnitterOfSocks · 01/07/2019 08:25

Yup, has to be every day here or it all goes to shit. I'm 11lbs over where I am comfortable at the moment, and it's going to take me MONTHS

Lilac3 · 01/07/2019 08:27

Yes, and ditto wearing elasticated clothing!
They lull you into a false sense of security 😳

RoseyPeas · 01/07/2019 09:02

This is my experience too!
For me l think the thought of the scales the next morning does help me restrain myself a bit.
I stopped weighing in Feb and gained a store in 4 months Blush
Also, I have never really understood the idea that you shouldn't weigh daily because your weight fluctuates. That seems to be a reason to weigh more often Confused

HarryHenderson · 01/07/2019 09:43

Oh yes! I've had a shock myself this morning! I'm going to be weighing myself religiously from now on.
Also big yes to not wearing elasticated and loose clothing! It's so easy to not notice how snug things are getting 😭

GhostRidersInDisguise · 01/07/2019 09:52

I agree RoseyPeas 100% Weighing once a week is crazy making and very demotivating. Daily puts you more in tune I would say and as we all know, half the battle is being in tune with our bodies, knowing how much we have worked off compared to intake etc..

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 01/07/2019 09:55

I put on at least a stone whilst wearing the same clothes - they were very forgiving, so I could kid myself I wasn't doing too badly.

I think the trick is to buy new clothes that are less forgiving once you've lost weight, so you have to constantly monitor through the clothes route as well.

The price of my waistline is constant vigilance Grin

happyhillock · 01/07/2019 10:03

I never weigh myself, most of the time i watch what i eat, and do a 40min walk everyday

Seer · 01/07/2019 18:20

I'm currently weighing daily whilst I'm aiming to lose 8lb but I'm wondering whether to go by weekly waist measurements once I'm maintaining.

Seer · 01/07/2019 18:21

And I never used to weigh myself and just went by my clothes... I put on 20lb without realising Hmm

Desmondo2016 · 01/07/2019 18:25

You do know it's not the 'not weighing' that ACTUALLY causes the weight gain right....😂

MrsGrindah · 01/07/2019 18:30

Completely agree. Lost 3 stone and got complacent ...stopped weighing myself everyday and therefore didn’t see the immediate impact of those biscuits, wine etc....and ta da! I’ve found that 3 st again! As long as you remember your weight fluctuates each day and don’t get despondent, daily weighing us a good way of ensuring you see an overall downward trend...and therefore more likely to stick to it. Anyway..here I go again!

Ah that's good to know @NottonightJosepheen ! Twice monthly measuring sounds like a good way forward.

When I finally realised I'd put on that 20lb my waist was an all time high of 35" Shock

It's now just over 32" and I'm aiming to be back to 29-30" like it's always been.

MyOtherProfile · 01/07/2019 19:30

You do know it's not the 'not weighing' that ACTUALLY causes the weight gain right

But it is easier to nip things in the bud when you see weight creeping up before your eyes, rather than turning a blind eye and assuming it's all ok.

pistachiomousse · 02/07/2019 05:33

Having read the responses I feel that for me daily weighing is definitely the way forward. It's interesting that no-one has said they stopped weighing and discovered they'd lost weight. I think I'll also join a few dieting threads on here to keep me focused as I've found that that's helped in the past.
