HDE - hunger directed eating.......

BentBaastard · 06/05/2019 23:23

Does anyone have any information about this?

It seems to be all over Instagram with people reading the book about skinny jeans and cake 🍰

I know I could ask on there but like the anonymity on here.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips or hints?

Ok

So the rules seem to be......

Eat what you like but only when you are hungry.
Be more mindful.
Don’t deprive yourself but wait for the hunger pain.

That’s it!

Yesterday I didn’t eat breakfast.
Ham and salad seeded wrap
Banana and grapes
Yoghurt
Pepperoni and olive chicken with roasted potatoes and broccoli
Bite of white chocolate

All done
Felt good

Read the book!
There are no rules as it’s not a diet and restrictions usually lead to a binge.

greenelephantscarf · 08/05/2019 10:54

for that you would need to learn to distinguish between hunger, appetite, thirst, craving

BentBaastard · 08/05/2019 11:05

I will read the book as soon as it gets here 🙄🙄

I’m reading the book, I definitely relate to it. The slimmest I’ve ever been was when I wasn’t dieting. It says scientifically if you categorise food into good and bad, you end up eating more of both. I’ve never read a dieting book but I’m forever trying to be good, falling off the wagon and eating loads. So am going to try to have a healthier relationship with food and try and relax, as well as listen to my body’s hunger and fullness queues.. I would say the book is worth reading.

OddestSock · 08/05/2019 13:03

I've been doing this without knowing it was a thing for about 5 months. I realised I needed to get out of the dieting mindset and just be able to enjoy food again. I didn't do it for weight loss, although that has been a pleasant result of it.

I always felt bad and berated myself in the past if I ate chocolate and cake. Now, if I want it, I eat it and that's that.

It does sound too good to be true, but honestly, you don't end up stuffing your face with pizza and chips and chocolate all day every day.

For the first time in over 20 years I'm not on a diet or thinking about going on a diet.

MysteryM · 10/05/2019 01:13

sounds good!

I like the three rules, OP

Eat what you like but only when you are hungry
Be more mindful
Don’t deprive yourself but wait for the hunger pain

I'm gonna write them down somewhere, thanks for the postings.

And meanwhile ... you can live your life!!

drigon · 10/05/2019 01:41

Sounds very much like the Paul McKenna method and Intuitive Eating. I have had some weight loss success with this kind of thing in the past, but it's very easy to fall off the wagon! I stay away from sugar too as a rule. I think it's time to try again... good luck if you're trying this too.

BentBaastard · 11/05/2019 18:57

The book is arriving on Monday so will keep this thread going and see if it works for me.

It works. Read the book more than once, you will pay more attention to different bits each time. Really absorb the first chapter about why diets don’t work and the study about the men who go mad when put on a diet, it’s eye opening.

Main tip is not to expect to crack it at your first attempt - you’ll relapse. It’s ok, just pick up and start again when you’re ready.

thislido · 11/05/2019 19:01

And by that I mean don’t stress if it takes months or even years. You’ve got the rest of your life!

Mumofthree86 · 11/05/2019 19:58

I’m finding it really helpful. I’ve enjoyed trying to rewire my brain. I overindulged in bread the other day and I really paid attention to how it made me feel afterwards and even the next morning. So I really focused on that and I think it will really help me to know when to stop with certain foods.

nellyitsme · 11/05/2019 22:51

Hi I've not heard about HDE but I've been reading Susie Orbach's book: On Eating and Paul Mckenna's I Can Make You Thin, both are based on intuitive eating and seem to be about HDE. I'm just starting to followiPaul McKennas golden rules

  1. Eat what you WANT
  2. Eat when you are HUNGRY
  3. Eat CONSCIOUSLY
  4. STOP eating when you are satisfied
I've lost a 1lb so far in 3 days - which more than I've lost following well known diet that I won't mention here. I've ordered Josie S's book after reading your thread OP
nellyitsme · 13/05/2019 08:56

I found this link useful. I'm not into paleo though paleoleap.com/4-practical-strategies-hunger-based-eating/

OddestSock · 13/05/2019 09:23

Yep, you will probably have relapses. I ate an entire pack of Percy pigs last night 🐖...but I enjoyed them, and instead of feeling guilty like I would have done when dieting, I figure that was what I needed at that moment, they were amazing, and it doesn't mean I have to binge it because I've messed everything up! It's life changing

hippoherostandinghere · 13/05/2019 10:21

I have just finished the book and I'm so inspired. It all just makes so much sense.

I'd love it here some success stories of people who have been doing it for a while.

It feels liberating!

nellyitsme · 13/05/2019 13:35

There's some great reviews of the book on Amazon and I searched for more on other sites and found lots of positive ones on the good reads site
I like the phrase I saw somewhere: it's not about what you eat it's about the hunger. This is like a load off my mind, as someone who's spent decades(!) telling myself what to eat eg low carb, low fat, high fat, healthy food, no sugar, seeds and pulses, no processed, etc etc I got to a stage of not knowing what to eat or when to eat or how to eat.

nellyitsme · 14/05/2019 21:46

Bumping

hippoherostandinghere · 14/05/2019 21:59

How's it going for you Nelly?
I have to say I'm still feeling great since starting this. I'm waiting until I'm hungry before I eat, I'm choosing what I really feel like, and make sure I'm concentrating when I'm eating. It will take a while to make the new changes become habit but I'm feeling very optimistic.

nellyitsme · 14/05/2019 22:24

Hi @hippoherostandinghere i was wandering where people were, as no activity on this poster a few days.
The book was waiting for me tonight when I got home. I can't wait to start reading it. I've been trying to follow what I think I should be doing (without the book) and I'm loving it, it's such a release. I've been eating whatever I fancy and waiting til I'm hungry and stopping when I'm feeling full - or not hungry, as I read somewhere. I struggle to know when I'm hungry as I'm so entrenched in eating because it's meal time or because it's there or I'm bored, or whatever. It's the same with fullness - I will eat til I'm uncomfortable so I'm making myself leave some of my meal. It'll take practice I guess. How are you doing? Have you been on many diets etc?

hippoherostandinghere · 14/05/2019 22:34

The book is brilliant, I really recommend it. It all makes so much sense.
I've been dieting in and off for so long. Have lost 11lb since March but it's slow and frustrating. I'm a compulsive weigher as well so I really need to get a handle on that.

BentBaastard · 14/05/2019 23:27

Oooh I didn’t see the replies until just now.

The book arrives on Sunday so I’m easing in gently with how I feel hunger wise.
No bingeing which is a revelation.

@BentBaastard and @hippoherostandinghere and anyone else. it's a whole new learning process isn't it - I'd not heard of HDE before I saw your post and it makes so much sense. Last night I had a very rich chocolate dessert covered in salted caramel - and I only ate half - this is unheard of for me!!

hippoherostandinghere · 15/05/2019 17:45

Well done!! That's big steps. But that's what it's all about. Not depriving yourself of anything but also knowing when to stop. I'll be glad to have some people who have read the book to talk to about it!

gotmychocolateimgood · 15/05/2019 17:51

I think a lot of people have a fear of hunger. The constant snacking culture means we aren't used to the feeling. But babies and toddlers are guided by their hunger and we should be too. It makes total sense.
