TigerFeet - you and me both - I've put on too. Half a pound, I think. Kew - staying the same is good, imo. Agalch - well done you.

DD is definitely much better now - thank you all for your good wishes. We risked going out today, but not to anywhere where there were going to be lots of people - we went and picked cherries and strawberries, and so I now have a big bowl of morello (sour) cherries that I have no idea what to do with. Any suggestions? I don't think I can make jam, although I quite like the thought. Don't have the equipment. We also have 2 punnets of strawberries that DD and I keep picking at.

cherry cake? crumble? (yummy)

can't think of anything that doesn't involve mega calores

JackieNo · 19/07/2007 15:46

Yes - I was thinking crumble, or maybe cherry pie

JackieNo · 19/07/2007 15:47

Maybe I could just freeze them, then I wouldn't have to decide.

WigWamBam · 19/07/2007 18:12

What about cherry clafoutis? Mega calories though ...

300g cherries, unpitted (you can stone them if you like but it's easier just to warn people that they have stones in)
300ml milk (you can use half milk and half single cream if you like)
3 eggs
60g caster sugar
60g plain flour
Half teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
Half-teaspoon vanilla extract
Icing sugar for serving

Remove the stalks and arrange the cherries in a single layer in a shallow, lightly buttered casserole/baking dish. Combine the eggs and sugar and beat until smooth. Add the milk, salt and vanilla extract, and stir briefly.

Fold in the sifted flour and baking powder until smooth. Pour the batter over the cherries until just covered (you may not use all the batter) and bake at 180C/Gas 4 for between 30 and 40 minutes, or until puffed, golden, and set. Rest for ten minutes (it will sink slightly), then dust with icing sugar and serve warm, straight from the dish.

Mmmm - that sounds gorgeous WWB - thank you. Do you think it would be OK with sour cherries? I've ended up freezing them in the meantime, just because I'd gone to the trouble of pitting them (took blimmin ages) and didn't want to waste the work I'd put into them. I was also wondering about cooking them up with a load of sugar, and adding them to a basic ice cream mixture (I think you've inspired me).

WigWamBam · 19/07/2007 20:25

Well, I'd eat it with sour cherries ... which probably doesn't come as much of a surprise

You could always put a little more sugar over the cherries when you put them into the dish.

But cherry ice-cream would be a fab idea as well ...

I've probably got enough to do both, tbh - it was a colander full to the brim before I pitted them. But DH is king of the ice cream maker, so they might have to wait till he's back from the US, in 9 days time.

ForcesSweetheart · 19/07/2007 21:32

Ooooh that sounds lovely WWB. What kinda texture does that come out? Just wondering coz I've got a load of frozen cherries in the freezer and need to bake some things tomorrow for our local NCTea Party on Saturday. Would have to be something I could easily slice up and wrap in portions to sell on the refreshments stand.

JackieNo · 19/07/2007 21:35

I suspect this is better as a warm pudding (with cream).

ForcesSweetheart · 19/07/2007 21:38

Ahh well they'll just have to make do with my blueberry & white chocolate cake then!

JackieNo · 19/07/2007 21:39

Doesn't sound like they'll be suffering too much then. Yum to that too.

WigWamBam · 19/07/2007 22:06

Yep, definitely a warm pudding. With cream .

It's rather batter-like, so it sets rather than bakes - a bit like an egg custard but slightly less wobbly!

Blueberry and white chocolate cake ... Sounds bloody gorgeous.

Am just off to check for stragglers then will be posting the weights in a few minutes.

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 20/07/2007 11:21

Agalch -1lb (total 32lb)
JackieNo +1/2 (total +1)
Kewcumber stayed the same
MrsJC -1 total 9lb*
Tigerfeet +2 (total 0)
WWB -1 (total 6lb)

So latecomers notwithstanding, Agalch, MrsJC and I get the crowns ... but I am also handing out a few gentle kicks up the bum as well

  • MrsJC's 9lb is from restart ... but she's actually lost 14lb from the beginning of the MoFos. So MrsJC gets a nice shiny stone to go with her crown, and I will adjust her card to reflect her weight from the start rather than the restart.
