can any seasoned dieter give an idea of daily regim pls?

mousemole · 17/07/2007 17:55

how are we all doing ? I've just discovered dried apricots as a nice sweet treat. 2 points in a 100g which isn't bad.
Clearly a nice slab of chocolate cake would be nicer

katybump · 17/07/2007 18:00

I like icelands kids lollies as a sweet treat.Only 1/2 point each although dried apricots are better for you

mousemole · 17/07/2007 18:05

hmm, good point. I remember from last times diet after DS1 eating a lot of FAB ice lollies. Think they were 1.5 points. Anything for that sweet fix. !

me23 · 17/07/2007 18:11

shall I sign up? I'll never stick to it, I'm unlikely to shift an ounce while bf - but getting tedious being 15kg over 'fighting weight'

mylastrolo · 17/07/2007 18:56

why is it so easy to put weight on and so hard to shift it !!!!!! can i start again tomorrow i really am rubbish have never stuck on a diet.

Celery · 17/07/2007 19:12

Adding myself on, although I've been dieting ( WW ) now since beginning of March. I started at 11.10 and am now 10.5. I just want to lose another half a stone, but the final few pounds are always the hardest! Need some motivation, because I feel so much better now and people keep telling me how nice I look, but I really want to shift that final 7 pounds!

Can I please join in? I know I'm a late comer, but hope it's not too late.

I lost nearly 3 stone last year, but have just gained a stone of it back in a month . I'm really with myself.

Never got to my ideal weight anyway. I am 11st 12. Need to be 9.3

Thank you!

zookeeper · 18/07/2007 19:56

you're still two stone lighter than you were! How did you do it?

mrsmalaprop · 18/07/2007 20:04

I won't lie. It was boring and hard, hard work. I spent an hour in the gym almost every day (I had a wonderful mother in law who took ds for a bit during the day so I could find time to go), cut out pasta, bread, dairy and alcohol. I ate small meals regularly (like some porridge for breakfast, a handful of nuts at about 9ish, fruit at about 11, a lunch of salad with seafood or oily fish, another snack mid afternoon and dinner which was mainly veg - in a stir fry or curry or with some grilled fish or chicken.

I went with the premise that nothing would cross my lips if it wasn't actively good for me, but didn't worry too much about the calorific content of the food too much (i.e I ate avocado and olives because, despite their high calorie content, they are good for you - I also read somewhere that the good fat in them actually helps your metabolism).

That was about it.

The real thing that helped was that I had an enormous hernia and the doctors refused to operate while I was so overweight. It is the only time I've managed to do it and it was only because I couldn't give up on myself - I HAD to do it, if that makes sense.

zookeeper · 18/07/2007 20:07

well good for you - how long did it take? What was the best thing about losing it? I need some inspiration!

mrsmalaprop · 18/07/2007 20:17

It took from June - September when I had the operation.

There were so many good things:

I went shopping for the first time for 3 years and actually enjoyed it!

People kept commenting on how I looked and I actually believed them.

I looked forward to the summer this year without my usual - 'oh my God, summer clothes are scanty' panics.

I could go and see old friends without looking at the shock in their eyes when they saw how big I'd got.

I can run around with ds and crawl around on the floor without rolls of flab getting in the way.

I had tonnes more energy and, despite how time consuming the constant exercising was, I actually got more done in terms of housework and other jobs because I wasn't sitting around feeling like a tired out lump.

I have to run, as off out with dh for the first time in ages. I will get back with more inspiration soon - I'm even inspiring myself again a little. Had lost all motivation.

Ceebee74 · 18/07/2007 20:19

Malaprop - well done on losing the 3 stone. What an achievement It is definitely the 'long and hard work' that I am struggling to get my head round. The fact I will be eating like I am now until Christmas is just plain depressing!

Anyway, did ok today. Was working from home which is always harder so I did a HUGE bowl of dry popcorn to snack on but that got boring after a while! Did take DS out for a 45 minute walk (but have also had a small slice of his birthday cake - which DH has agreed to now throw away).

zookeeper · 18/07/2007 20:20

I am inspired .

Today I struggled down the stairs with ex do's punch bag - I really struggled. Out of interest I weighed it and it is exactly three stone which is less than the weight I have put on over the last few years.

It's no wonder I have no energy

zookeeper · 18/07/2007 20:21

I know what you mean Ceebee - I feel I'm so fat now that it's going to take forever - it just seems a bit overwhelming.

I am concentrating on half stones at a time - when I have lost half a stone will treat myself to some jewellery or something non-edible

blahblahblahniks · 18/07/2007 20:25

Hello, sorry I'm late.....I'd like to join in too.

I just read that bloody 'skinny bitches' book so I'll be dieting the vegan way! Makes it much easier if you have no sugar, no alcohol, no dairy, no meat, no fish if you ask me, there are only grains, veggies and fruit left (and oil obviously).

So far I've lost one stone, I was 11st 4 this morning and want to get down to 9st 13.

I'd like to be skinny by September.

Can I ask what everyone does about exercise? I'm convinced that the only way to lose weight for me is to exercise more, but am finding it very difficult time-wise what with an 8 month old DD to look after now.

I am managing to walk a lot, especially now it has stopped raining so much...have target of 12,000 steps a day, managed over 15,000 today just because I have made a point this week of going for a 40 minute walk with the pushchair after breakfast rather than watching GMTV! Haven't the time to do anything else during the day other than walk due to no babyminding facilities for me, and have no energy to do classes etc in evening. Wondered what everyone else did for exercise and how they manage with the kids?

JammyPotter · 18/07/2007 23:05

i think you're right, exercise is teh way forward. I used to walk for 30 minutes a day solidly and the weight did drop off. I find it hard to go out on my own to do it though and my 2 exercise buddies are crap. Clearly I will have to push myself to go myself

mrsmalaprop · 18/07/2007 23:42

I'm wondering about this too. It was easy enough for me to go to the gym for an hour and walk for an hour everyday the last time because ds had two hour long naps a day (although it was a bit stressful losing my housework / relax time in the day). I didn't just walk for walking's sake, though. I had a rule that I would never drive or take the bus anywhere if it was physically possible to walk it, so it was all running errands, going to see friends, shopping...etc.

I can't do either of those things now as ds is 2, doesn't sleep so much in the day, doesn't want to be in his pushchair for more than five minutes and demands more time and energy than he did a year ago (although not, unfortunately, aerobic energy as he walks too slowly!)

I am contemplating doing exercise videos at home while ds has his 1 sleep a day, but am already dubious about how it will work as motivating myself to jump up and down in my living room where I am used to relaxing, drinking tea and watching telly, will be more difficult than getting my sorry arse to the gym. I am also less likely to do that on days dh is home from work. He would find it all far too hilarious.

This is my biggest problem as the only way I have ever managed to lose weight is by exercising consistently. If I don't have those lovely endorphines I just lose the will to starve myself!

MLB - 15,000 is brilliant. That would easily make a difference. The main thing is how it makes you feel. I think exercise makes you feel energised and positive and that wins half the battle for you.

Here's me making it sound easy when I've put on a stone in no time at all and haven't been able to get the motivation up to do anything about it. It is the hardest thing in the bloody world!
