Can't be bothered to go and waste more money on another diet book before I know if it's something I'm likely to stick to... can someone explain roughly what the South Beach Diet is please? I've heard it really works.

It's a low carbohydrate diet, but it's not as extreme as Atkins. Basically for the first two weeks you don't eat much carbs at all, and then after that you introduce them, but no refined carbs, so wholemeal/brown everything. From what I've read health professionals have fewer concerns about it than about Atkins. I haven't tried it, but I love my carbs too much so I'm doing WW instead

There's a website here

Actually it says on the website that it's not low carb, but the right carb. I would consider it low carb though because I eat so many carbs .

It's similar to Atkins in that you have a 2 week induction of limited foods. No carbs, no fruit and limited veg. But also has the un-added bonus of being low fat too! After the 2 weeks, you then increase your carbs, but like bran says, there are good carbs and bad carbs. So unfortunately potatoes, white bread, white flour, white pasta are bad, so they are no-no's. Theres a really good website click on here that gives a much better insight and also lists lists more diets and what they are all about.

Thanks ks, let me know whether you lose 8lbs in 2 weeks!

Have realised that DH can only stick to a diet if it involves lots of vegetables as he can't cope with only a half full plate , so am going to follow this South Beach thing in a broad sense I think.
