Don’t want to be the fat friend on group holiday!

Holiday with a group of friends and husbands first two weeks of July and I am a lot bigger than them. And I really don’t want to feel self conscious at the pool.
Is it possible to lose 3 stone in 5 months? I’ve been sticking to 1200 calories a day since Monday and going for a brisk 30 minute walk every evening.
I really hope I can do this as I have tried and failed since I’ve had children but hubby is on board and been supporting me. Eek!

Don’t eat too much fruit!!

My natural reaction to a bad day is to think stuff it and carry on eating crap for the following week. But my body can absorb the odd bad day quite effectively. When I can have a bad day and jump straight back to it, it is fine.

This advice from StealthPolarBear is right. The best tip I ever read in relation to trying to lose weight (I possibly read it on MN) was the "sunburn" analogy:
If you get a bit sunburnt, you don't think "fuck it, I've got sunburned a bit so I might as well lie out in the full sun for the rest of the day without sun cream and just burn completely"". Instead, you try to mitigate the sunburn without feeling guilty that you got burned. So you make doubly sure the next day that you are covered up, have plenty of suncream etc.
Same with food. If you find yourself going off plan for a meal, that is easily recoverable and you can make adjustments for the rest of the day/the next day to compensate. That really helps me when I've had a bad day.

I am currently doing the 8 week blood sugar diet. I started on New Years Day (doesn't everyone?) with the aim of losing 1 1/2 stone and I've just done the first stone. I am fairly confident that I'll do the next half tone in the next couple of weeks or so, although I know the rate will slow down. I don't know how it would work if I had 3 stone to lose as it's for a maximum of 8 weeks. Presumably at the end of 8 weeks you could up your calories so that you are eating more but still losing?

I lost 3st in 6 months on Slimming World. I had aimed for 24lbs in 24 weeks and astounded myself with my loss.

ppeatfruit · 20/01/2019 13:20

Lucky I lost 3 stone eating just fruit for breakfast! There is a secret though, it is to EAT FRUIT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH and eat good seasonal organic fresh fruit.

So many people are believe that fruit is all sugar, it has some fruit sugar of course but it also has fibre, minerals , loads of vitamin C. I grate the skin and pith and juice of course of a lemon in my morning smoothie and my gums do not bleed. My dentist is impressed! I'm not young either.

Can I ask is eating fruit on an empty stomach much better because it fills you up?
Think I’ll definitely cut the carbs and I was looking at ordering the 8 week blood sugar diet and the 30 day fit.
Loving all the help. Thank you!

Not saying fruit bad for you! Just I know when I lost a big chunk of weight it’s bevause I cut it all out apart from berries. However I would agree with you on eating fruit on an empty stomach if you are going to, not as a dessert after a big meal.

Coronapop · 20/01/2019 13:50

I sometimes try standing up while watching TV doing squats and weights and any other suitable exercises. It makes me feel I'm doing something useful. Still find it incredibly difficult to lost weight but that's lack of will power about carbs etc on my part.

mooncuplanding · 20/01/2019 13:54

If you aim to keep your blood sugar low either through keto, Michael Mosley or paleo you will lose that weight

The type of calories that you eat matter in weight loss.

Lots of carbs = high blood sugar = really tough to not get ravenous binges and your body wont even touch the fat it has stored while your blood sugar is high so no weight loss

Low carbs and high fat, medium protein = low blood sugar = satiety and actual fat burning. Lower your insulin and your body will use its stored fat for energy

Coronapop · 20/01/2019 13:54

And if you don't lose as much as 3 stone just adapt wardrobe accordingly and enjoy yourself, good quality swimsuit (not high leg), not too short shorts with not too tight top.

mooncuplanding · 20/01/2019 13:58

Fruit is a carbohydrate so induces an insulin response

If insulin is high, your weight loss will be much less. Insulin keeps that fat right there in the cell, lower your insulin and that fat can be used for fuel, I.e. burned!

EmmaGrundyForPM Really good sunburn analogy. I am massive BSD fan too (Well done on your weight loss!) and have done well on it (I actively like it and feel so much better). Interestingly the new Fast800 that MM has published is "the very fast 800" then "the new 5:2". The very fast 800 is essentially the BSD but remarketed so not so focussed on diabetes and he says you can stay on it for 20 weeks. I'm just keeping on with the same principles with the odd lapse and weight still coming off steadily (though not as much as at first). (The new 5:2 is just old 5:2 but with 800 cals/d on fast days)

I want to echo what @ppeatfruit said on the 1st page. This is basically the Harcombe diet which starts with a 5 day "detox" - no caffeine, fizzy drinks, carbs (except small portion of brown rice if you must) and lots of meat, veg, salad (no fruit), natural yogurt etc. These days are tough because you get withdrawal symptoms. Then after phase 2, you can have non-processed food as well. I can't believe how much I lost in 5 days and because it vanished my caffeine/dairy addiction, it stayed off in phase 2.. and more..

I strongly believe that the best way for a person to lose weight depends on your personality. If you don't mind making small changes for a long time and losing 4lb/month, then that works. But many people hate the slow approach and need to lose it quickly.

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2019 10:55

Nomorecakes If you eat fruit on it's own, it doesn't necesarily fill you up.(unless you chew an apple slowly and add some nuts too.

Eating fruit on an empty stomach is more to do with the digestion, it's semi digested anyway so if eaten AfTER a traditional heavy meal it will rot on top of it in your gut causing arthritis, maybe IBS and bloating. So you don't get the benefits of the goodness of it.

I will also add that we are all different and react to certain foods in varying ways.

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2019 11:00

Thanks for noticing that Worried But I can't eat all the protein on the Harcombe (it would make me ill). The way of eating I follow is basically Food Combining (as you say protein and salads'veg.) but with the odd egg or trout and salmon Also I do very well with fruit!!! As you can tell Grin

Nomorecakes · 21/01/2019 11:30

First weigh in and 4lbs off!
I had melon first thing before school run then went a 3 mile walk/jog. Then came back and had two hard boiled eggs. Feel great!
