Microwavable protein

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2019 10:00

Hi,
I'm looking for some protein to cook in the microwave with those pouches of steamed veg. I eat very little meat so a Quorn thing would be good. It just seems that most of those things need to be cooked on the hob or in the oven, but if I could find something I can do in the microwave, I know I'm more likely to have it often.

Egg? Scrambled egg in microwave is ok?

Jackshouse · 01/01/2019 10:02

Eggs

poloves · 01/01/2019 12:26

Quorn do some micro meals I think

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2019 12:36

Thanks poloves, but I'm looking for something to go with the veg pouches, not ready meals in themselves.
Thanks to those who suggested eggs, but I don't want that every day so looking for other solutions.

The non-breaded Quorn stuff like burgers, meatballs, sausages and plain fillet works put decently in the microwave. Not as good as if it’s cooked on the hob, but it’s ok.

You can get microwaveable quinoa or add a can of beans or lentils to the steamed veg to make more of a warm salad.

I have steamed veg for lunch most days and personally I just have some cheese, hommus, boiled eggs, nuts etc. on the side most of the time. It’s a bit of an odd meal but it’s easy.

What about things that don't need heating like canned tuna or other fish

FATEdestiny · 01/01/2019 14:39

You can poach most fish in the microwave, if you eat fish?

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2019 15:34

I eat a bit of fish, but think that canned tuna is the most disgusting thing in the world. I do have some frozen fish filets in the freezer, but never cooked them.

Kmc - I nearly put fire to my flat last time I put a plain quorn filet in the microwave.

If you nearly set fire to it then you are cooking it far too long.

2 minutes tops for a quorn steak or burger. 3 if frozen. I microwave quorn all the time. My favourite quick meal is quorn meatballs (5, cooked from frozen, 2 mins), in a seeded wrap, with garlic and herbs Philadelphia and salad leaves.

Falafel, the cauldron brand ones are nice and can be eaten hot or cold. Tinned beans, marinated tofu, tinned mackerel or smoked vac packed mackerel.

BikeRunSki · 01/01/2019 15:48

Quorn meatballs aren’t bad, 2 mins in microwave.

I often cook fish in the microwave .

Place in a dish with a couple of slices of lemon and cover with cling film. It needs a cou0le of minutes only- of course depending on the power ofyour microwave and the thickness of the fish.

So easy and the kitchen doesn't smell too fishy.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/01/2019 12:10

Is the lemon compulsory lego?

OP posts:
NoSquirrels · 02/01/2019 12:15

The lemon is not compulsory! My DH has microwave-steamed fish without lemon pretty much daily.

legolimb · 02/01/2019 12:37

No - lemon isn't compulsory. I just like to make it a little more exciting and a bit of citrus doesn't add fat/cals/carbs to the fish. Grin

FATEdestiny · 02/01/2019 13:05

You can poach fish in just water in the microwave, although I prefer poaching in milk. Just make sure it's covered.

Sauvignonblanket · 02/01/2019 13:08

How about the pouches of already-cooked lentils and/or quinoa from people like Tilda and Merchant Gourmet? Not super economical but easy.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/01/2019 14:31

I've never seen those Sauvignon.

Aldi do microwaveable pouches of lentils, pulses, quinoa etc and they are fairly cheap. I have just had half a pack of curried chickpeas and lentils with half a pack of whilegrain rice in the microwave. Quick, easy, filling and fairly low calorie (387 cals for 250g meal)

Sauvignonblanket · 02/01/2019 19:52

Sainsbury's has some on offer at the moment too...
