Gastric band

I’m having a gastric band fitted in a few weeks. I’ve gained 6.5 stone since 2012, and I cannot lose it all without help.

I’ve tried everything. One of my more extreme attempts included privately prescribed appetite suppressants and having a feeding tube inserted.

So, I’m admitting defeat and surgery it is. I’m terrified, but hopeful. I’ve been so miserable these last few years and I am HUGE (17.5 stone at 5ft 4”). Most worryingly, I am still gaining as well.

Reasons for my weight gain? Comfort eating, mainly. My younger brother died, then my dad died a year later. I had an ectopic pregnancy, then ivf and had my daughter - and then, the biggest kicker - my mum died.

I’ve had counselling and cbt, and I’m on anti-depressants, too. I have a good understanding of why I use food for comfort, but I need something other than will power alone to break my bad habits.

Wish me luck!

Hi @refusethelies I was just wondering if you have any updates to share? I have my first appointment tonight. I hope you are happy with your progress.

Hello! Short update - I’ve stalled somewhat.

I had my second band fill early in December, which took total in band to 6ml. But I was coughing constantly and couldn’t keep any food down, so I had to have a defill.

The nurse thought I’d had too much fluid added too quickly post-surgery and it had irritated and inflamed the area of my stomach where the band was sitting.

I felt much, much better after having some fluid out, and then Christmas and new year got in the way Grin

I’m back at the clinic next week to start having very small amounts of fluid put back in (slowly and gradually over a few weeks) because, although I haven’t gained any weight since the defill, I’ve also not lost anything either and I can eat pretty much anything (apart from bread!).

So, yes - a bit of a blip, but onwards and upwards!

Hi @refusethelies, I’m looking back at your post with interest, as my band surgery is in less than 2 weeks, I start the detox diet tomorrow 😬! Wondered how you’ve been and found the band nearly 2 years on?
