3 stone gain in 3 months

I'm worried about dd. She is 23 and has always been very slim without dieting. She has literally gone from 9st to 12st in 13 weeks. She feels bloated, often unable to wear her clothes, and has painful cramps and diarrhoea. She feels generally unwell and lethargic all the time.

She broke up with her boyfriend of five years three months ago and two GPs have put the weight gain down to depression/ comfort eating but to me that seems a massive gain in such a short time. I'm sure something isn't right. She has cut right back on dairy and wheat in the last few weeks with zero difference. How many calories would you have to eat to gain 3 stone in 13 weeks, is that even possible? The worst thing is I've been dieting and just reached my target of losing 2.5 stone. I feel awful seeing her so down about her weight.

Does anyone on here have any experience of similar? I don't have a lot of money but I'm considering taking her to a private gp.

Could you see a different GP at your own practice for a second opinion before you pay privately? I hope you get some help x

Has she come off the pill? I have PCOS and my weight gain was massive when off the pill

Is she pregnant?

youokhon · 29/06/2018 21:08

Definitely not pregnant but yes coincided with her stopping the pill, hadn't even thought of that as a possible connection. Thank you, will look into it and maybe get her to see another gp and mention the pill.

Has her GP put her on antidepressants? Mirtazapine is really well known for causing weight gain (in part because it makes you constantly hungry).

They suggested ADs but she decided to wait a few weeks and see how she feels, she's not taking anything at all other than pro biotics

Coming off the pill could definitely cause this. I'd recommend she use something like MyFitnessPal and exercise, even if she doesn't see results straight away: it should settle down after a few months and then the habits will be ingrained and it will start to come off.

However, it could also be worth getting a blood test from the docs or testing her thyroid function, as it does seem a large amount to put on so quickly.

She's lucky to have such a supportive mum Smile

Hi, I’m just wondering if you ever got to the bottom of what was happening with your daughters weight?

I’m currently going through something similar and was searching online, and came across this thread. I have gained two stone in the space of a few months and I’m also worrying as I can’t pin point the connection, as I’ve been mindfully eating and exercising.

Any advice would be great. I have IBS and PMDD, I also recently started probiotics for my IBS a couple of weeks ago.

I have always been around 11 stone but I’ve gone up to around 13, and I just don’t understand what’s happened as I haven’t had any symptoms for any of the usual causes (PCOS, thyroid) so I feel very lost!

Thanks x
