Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus... - Part 5

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 07/06/2018 20:04

Hello, welcome to the fifth instalment (wow!) of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus …’ thread Smile

If you want to read them (but by no means feel obliged!), the previous threads are here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and all at different stages, but we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way

Collectively, we’ve lost an incredible….........Star 1024lbs Star since the start of the first thread in Dec 16, which is amazing! Grin Grin

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread(s), I’ll add one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals to you.

That's fab, really losing it. Fitness classes scare me at the moment, one of my goals is to get to size 16 and start at the gym/classes.

Typed too fast, obviously meant Reallylosingit, not really losing it.

I'd like to do classes to. I'd really like to try Pilates and yoga but I need not to be the size I'm at. Size 16 would be ace. The others are all slimnand I did try a class when I wasn't quite as big and physically my stomach was in the way etc :(

I could do with classes for larger people as if so go!

I'd also like to do c25k but my body really isn't strong enough to take the extra weight. I think when I'm not obese maybe!?

The other goal is a local water park. Doesn't recommend with a bmi over 30. Ive told the girls I can't go in with them if we go this year :( But I would so love to go next year.

I know the theory is to do all the things you'd do when you lose weight now... but in my case most of these will have to wait!! I so hope I can do it.

I saw another thread talking about 95% of people who lose weight fail to keep it off and it does scare me so much. Being as big as we are on this thread I worry I went too far and am broken. But I have to remind myself being healthier can only help and there's wonderful examples of people losing on this thread.

This isn't a class at a gym, it's at a village hall and I like that it is other people that leave sweaty too! Have a look around and see what there is near you

ScaredPAD - I understand the fear of putting it back on but that is why I think changes you make have to be sustainable for life and crash diets don't work as I have failed with those so many times before.

The figures on those who regain after 5 years are a big worry . I've read things that suggest they aren't accurate though. Also studies that look at those who don't regain the weight say it doesn't matter how people lost it but what those who maintained all have in common is doing daily exercise.

I know that for me to keep it off I will always need to log my food but it is almost second nature at this point and only takes a few minutes a day. In an ideal world i'd trust my body to self regulate but after being overweight for years and years I don't. I think the exercise adds a significant amount to your TDEE so having the extra daily calories available gives greater flexibility and you're less likely to feel deprived and increases greater chances of success long term. That's my theory anyway and I'm sticking to it !

Thought i'd stick up amother photo. It's me running again i'm afraid as they have a photographer there each week. I've got approx 9 lbs to go and please excuse my white legs ! I'm second one from front in black - around 100lbs down since Nov 2016. Am 48 and been overweight since I was 21, long history of being exercise shirker!

I did put mine back on, but stayed at goal for about a year. I ate more than when I was dieting but I exercised minimum 3 classes a week which was crucial, think that’s why it’s so important to find exercise you like, I really enjoyed them.

I then changed jobs which was all consuming and totally out of my comfort zone, so very long hours. My dad got very poorly with cancer so went to my parents as often as possible. My daughter also had poor mental health which obviously I tried to get all sorts of help for, plus 3 other children to look after. Looking after my diet/exercise came very low on the list. This time when I lose it, it needs to stay a priority whatever life throws at me.

Post - that's amazing! You look so normal! And fit! And a runner :) I so want that to be me in the future :) Well done. You must be so proud!!! And that must feel amazing. Please do stick around for those of us near the beginning of the journey.

I'd read something similar about them continuing to exercise and think that and food tracking may just be things we live with for having been so obese. In which case if it keeps me healthy ace. Ive flirted with intuitive eating before but i think my radar must be broken!.

Sausage that sounds a really hard time. Ive had a lot of trauma in my life and suspect it will continue... I guess we need to just keep our health first. But it is so so hard.

Post brilliant pic and brilliant advice. As you've brought up running I have a few twinges in one knee (sharp twinges, at the base of knee and slightly towards inside of leg) that I get after running but not during. The Internet has totally confused me about what it is, and what to do about it! Could you point me in the right direction by any chance? I was thinking of yoga or Pilates on the days in between runs, to see if improving balance and strength would help?

I too have regained weight in the past, but I genuinely believed once I lost weight I could stop paying attention Blush The difference for me this time is I know I'm doing this way of eating forever, really. Being flexible for celebrations or disasters, but getting right back on it. In the year I've been at this, my DM has had cancer and major surgery, my SEN DD is having school challenges and funding issues, and work stress has increased. But overall I have stuck to my plan and at least maintained through the very tough times - that's a huge first for me.

It totally is Scared, but we need to look after ourselves first otherwise we are no good to anybody.

Basically, we can do this, we totally can, we just need this to be our focus and we will get there and stay there. We wil still be going through the same crap whether we are fat or thin, but being healthy will give us the physical reserves to cope.

Have a good day.

Wow post you look so great!

I also read that other thread where someone mentioned about putting back on - to be honest this has always been the case for me until I started reading around. Did you know that your body has a kind of 'set point' for weight - it doesn't like change at all and wants to get back. I think although its only 10lb loss then I have changed my 'set-point' from 21st to 20st ish.

I think I need to get in more exercise like Post and B1rd has said - it is embarrassing that I can't do half the stuff in Taekwondo but they are all so lovely then it doesn't feel as terrible.

Thanks for all your lovely words further up the thread, I've not had a sod it moment this week which has been good.

Ive lost 2lbs!

So 10lb in 7 weeks so far
103 to go.
I wasn't expecting to lose so that was a bonus! I keep thinking "it might not be real, it could be as it could be y " but it's working so far.

I've read about set point before (lurked on rebelfit for a bit) and found it thoroughly depressing if my body is going to keep trying to be a high weight and resist my attempts....

Let's encourage each other with it tho ugh. But a 5% success is scary. I'm trying to counter with any weight lost will help/being fitter will help etc. And wow if I could look like Post and run that would be awesome!

How much had you lost/what weight did you start running Post?

Welcome newbies. Well done on your progress so far.

Good job with the losses to those that weighed in in the last couple of days.

Really interesting to hear how you are approaching seeing family after a lot of weight loss, Honey and Breaking. I'm doing the same thing this summer but really dreading it as I hate people commenting on my body. I feel like they are judging me and saying "now you may be acceptable but before...". What do you actually say to people who say something? I try to ignore it and change the subject as fast as possible but some people take that badly.

Great photo, Post, you look amazing! Very wise words about preparing for any summer holidays. I have the outline of a plan but really could do with filling in some of the details as it's now the middle of June. How are things at home with you? I hope the stressful situations are improving Thanks

I feel pretty sad reading you folk saying you have to lose more weight and be smaller before you can go to exercise classes or do C25K, etc. I was exactly the same with C25K and said I would do it once I got under 13st but then felt "too big" (whatever the fuck that means) and that people would stare or make comments and that I just couldn't cope with that as it would crush me. So I waited even longer and now I'm finally doing it I can see all these other people of different sizes getting on and doing whatever the hell they want. There is a woman in her thirties who I see a fair bit running who I think is 14-16st and I think looks great. But it really doesn't matter what me or anyone else thinks she looks like. She has the right to do whatever exercise she feels like without any kind of harassment. Why is society so absolutely horrible to overweight people?! It's only now that I am not officially overweight that I really see it as I am treated so much better now. It's wrong and really unfair. Anyway, don't put things off because of other people's shitty opinions! I've finished ranting now Grin

(Oops I can't count it's 11lb so far. Can't wait to get to the first stone!)

Well done another! I have to wait for c25k simply due to my weight on my joints rather than worrying about what people think. I was about 16 stone i think when I last tried it and damaged my ankle. I still get muscle issues in my legs with walking so am trying to build strength. Running in particular is hard on the body if you have a lot of extra weight and arent fit! Class wise I do wish there were classes for big people. I saw curvy yoga classes in America and I'd so do that!

I will get there :) for now I'm loving swimming and increasing walking!

What about aqua aerobics Scared? I am definitely nowhere near the largest person there and nobody bats an eyelid, it’s good fun too.

Report
honeysucklejasmine · 12/06/2018 13:31

Aquaerobics is great, I really enjoyed it when I did it. Had to stop when I got pregnant due to vomit - no way I'd make it out the pool in time! Might look up a local class now though.

AnotherOtter I suppose it depends on your family. Mine are wonderful so any comment really would come from a supportive place. Also, of the grandchildren, I'm the only one who inherited our late grandmother's immune disorder, so I think there's a greater understanding and interest in my overall health - there but for the grace of God, etc.

ScaredPAD · 12/06/2018 13:57

I do aqua aerobics and love it! I'm also not the largest there. There's a lot of older people and those with mobility issues so it feels very "safe." At the moment I do that once a week and swim 1k 2-3 x a week and I'm really loving it. It makes a difference to be doing something I enjoy rather than the times I've made myself go to the gym and hated it.

I did love the c25k when I last tried it (got part way through week 4 ) so I'm looking forwards to feeling up to it again. I'm 5 ft 6 so maybe at 13/14 stone? Still obese but not as much. I so hope I can do it! If that takes about a year my body should be a lot fitter after a year of swimmi mg and walking too.

I haven't a clue what to say to family. Mine ar all hideous and definitely demonize fat so I try to avoid the topic. I hate the idea that you're only acceptable or "Good for losing weight. At the same time thinking I'll be healthier and look better and able to do more when I have!

I know we'll all carry weight differently, and be different heights etc, but I was well over 15 stone, and about 9 months into losing weight, when I started running (I'm 5'9"). I just take it very gently. I made sure I had good supportive shoes, and I mostly started off on grass. At the start I could barely do a minute of jogging, so it was a gradual build up! I'm a total convert though, and get quite grumpy if it looks like something is going to get in the way of a planned run time Grin I'm on week 7 of the couch to 5k schedule, so doing about 20 minutes of jogging at a time, but I have taken longer than 7 weeks to achieve that because I can only find two time slots to run per week, not three (the challenges of single parenthood!)

To my surprise, it helps hugely with feeling positive about myself the rest of the week. I do feel self conscious when I start off, but I soon forget about it and get absorbed in what I'm doing.

Well done on the loss ScaredPAD that's great. You'll soon be at that first stone!

B1rd, have you seen the NHS' website on running injuries? https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/knee-pain-and-other-running-injuries/ Has some great advice and also a link to the relevant physio. I've been doing the knee physio mostly every day in front of the news for three weeks and my bad knee (injuried while doing HIIT while manic) is much more solid. Also went to a running shop and got fucking expensive good running shoes with the correct support for my gait. Hope your knee is better soon Thanks

Post wow is all I have to say.

Scared I'm 5ft7 and 18 plus stone and I'm loving the gym no-one bothers my some are large some are v skinny some are muscle machines.

I've always been bigger but put a lot on after my wedding and while I was doing a job I hated and studying. I lost it all between dc and after last dc. Then dd got ill and the weight crept on and I've not managed to stick to anything for last decade till now. I know it's only been a couple of months and I've only managed less than half a stone but I'm feeling better and the loss will come I'm sure and this time I am viewing it as a life change not a temp change.

Pod I'm cooking a healthy day rather than give into dh wish for take away. I've had a very productive day at work and d's has been picked to represent his school (he never pushes himself forward so a big deal)

I've had a naughty dinner tonight - loaded nachos. I would love to snack more but I'm right up to my calorie allowance for the day so can't. Still, it tasted lush. I do miss the melted cheese of course, but it's still good.
